A bit of a squeeze work-wise, but I have booked a ticket for the first run.
Won't be in period costume this time though.

I agree about the upkeep. But usually don't they run a 'staff-only' trip when they do these things? Which is usually free (or V.cheap)? Since there not this time id have thought we would get a little bit of discount for the main one. For £30.90 I could go from Waterloo all the way to Portsmouth, take the ferry to Ryde, then get a '38 stock' to Shanklin, and then do the return back to London. That seems better value to get a ride on the same train! I think the reason its quite expensive is the bit to Charing Cross disused. As this is your second post on this thread about trying to get the visit cheaper, I think I get your point. If you don't want to pay the stated fare, don't go, simple as that. Like Colin said in the last post, and I said near the beginning, at least you know what your money is going towards. These visits are also very well staffed, which presumably costs money too. That said, I had to spend ~£8 getting to Edgware and back on the last 38 day, so given the cost of the heritage train journey, I think the powers that be should *probably* make it so that a valid ticket for one of these events also could also be used to get there and back on the network as well. That wouldn't take funds away from the 38S or cause any other problems elsewhere? I've booked for the first run too - see you all there. Will there be anyone on the second one I wonder?! Maybe the next heritage run could be on the Piccadilly to Aldwych?

Maybe the next heritage run could be on the Piccadilly to Aldwych? Thinking about it, that is going to be an operational nightmare for the normal service. Am I correct in saying that, at some point, the train would have to run wrong line, because is access to the branch only available from the northbound direction, and to get the train back south would involve admiring either the Arnos Grove terminating platform or the Wood Green tunnel turn back?

That wouldn't take funds away from the 38S or cause any other problems elsewhere? Unfortunately it would. I had it explained to me previously that the LTM is now an independant company, allowing it to have more control over things such as it's finances, but meaning that they have to go through more official channels with London Underground regarding operating trains

The points to the Aldwych single are now scotched, clipped and padlocked and the lever in the IMR is plated over. So they can only be moved (most likely) from the track.

This is exactly the reason that I signed up here Thanks for the information, I shall be booking for the return trip full ride. The only minor disappointment from my point of view is not being allowed to stay on the train into the West Hampstead siding, but I can understand why this is not to be and I have been in once before (on a railtour I should add).

How exciting! I haven't been on a 38 for about 30 years so I'm really looking forward to it! And over the JLE too - there's a sight I thought I'd never see. I've booked on the second journey. :-)

To be fair, it is a special service, and it is for a good cause. Yes it's expensive in comparison but the comparisons are with BR services operating on a daily basis - not a railtour running with 1930s stock.

Indeed - if you check the prices of heritage tours on the mainline railways, you'll be lucky to find a ticket costing under £30. Most are closer to £60+ for the steam trains.

Ticket booked for the charing X run. The run into CX was the big selling point for me tbh.
On a slightly divergent note - would the 38 stock and the Cravens 59(?) stock be able to work together? I wonder if the greater capacity would permit lower ticket prices?

The 1960ts and the 38ts can not work together as far as I know. I've often wondered why the 60ts isn't in silver condition as it was built?

These visits are also very well staffed, which presumably costs money too. More often than not the stewards on the train are volunteers and not being paid. The expense comes from needing two train operators, paying for an operating official, etc etc.

The cravens' history is tied up with the Ongar branch, and as thats how it looked at the time of its withdrawl after repaint for Loughton 150 (at least I think thats what it was for!), perhaps its thought a nicer look than how it was before? If they really wanted to look authentic, they could take a couple of the standard trailers from Acton! This would then free up the 38 trailer which with a 2 car unit from IOW could form another unit to add to the 4 car? Here I go with fantasy again! I'm very tempted to book a trip, I hope I'm free for it; a rare oppertunity!

I presume they need at least a motorman and a guard - what's the function of the second motorman?

The 38TS is staffed by 'Motormen' from Test Crew Operations from Hearne House. One acts as guard when not 'up the front'. There would also be an Operating Official and 'staff' to act as Stewards, at least one in each car in addition to the above. There would be other traveling ' Officials ' as deemed necessary for a particular trip.

Ive often wondered about that. Like when the heritage Q stock is restored to opperation, would there be many left working for TfL whos actually driven one? Just the gap of knowledge, you know? Fascinating.

I'll be out of London on 5th August, so I'll have to rely on seeing people's uploaded pictures. It'd be interesting to see one of the 38 stock pausing at a station with PEDs. I wonder how many of the sets of doors would line up?

As regards the 'Motormen' for the restored Q Stock, I imagine we're looking towards the Test Crew again. I doubt any of the present members of said group has ever been up front of a 1923 Met Vickers Loco in passenger service, so the Q Stock would be just another stock to learn, as is the new 09 TS and the 'S' Stock.

I should imagine it's not the learning the official ways of doing things, but all the finnicky little bits that aren't written down anywhere. Sarah has presumably had a consistent occupancy that can pass all the little tricks down.
Picked up my ticket from the doormat this afternoon...

Thinking about this - Charing X, what are we allowed/not allowed to do? is it a "stretch your legs and take the odd photo and get back on" job, or is it possible to leave the tour there (I'm not planning on leaving, but I've dragged a friend along). Presumably the station is pretty much as it was in passenger service?

At Charing Cross I believe there will be time to 'stretch your legs' and take photographs, however I do not think it is intended that anyone should leave the station, or anyone join the train at this point. The arrangements could of course change on the day due to prevailing conditions.

I really wish I could make the trip over to the UK for this next week. Is there another 38 ts run on the Northern Line perhaps coming up later this year or next year?

lol. I rang them at around 11 today, as I had received missed calls from them while I was on holiday. The person who I spoke to said to me "Yep we have 1 more seat. Oh wait, no, someone is trying to book it at the moment on the internet" She said she would 10 mins and call me back. When she called me back she said that there was 1 seat left and so I bought it.

As there seem to be quite a few of us here going on the first run, would it be worth meeting somewhere locally afterwards for a coffee or beer? I don't know the area at all, so I'm probably not the best person, tbh. Either that or we could quickly get a picnic table out at Charing Cross
