It may be logistically easier to hand the West Anglia services to the Crossrail concessionaire, operated under the London Overground brand considering they'll be operating the GA Shenfield metro services from 2015. This ensures staff who currently work for GA will be able to work between the Shenfield and the other metro services under one employer.

canada water should had extended since its new built station (built in 2000's) which could easily extended (it not hard to extend the platforms bit) just demlish tunnel parts and extend it - just small platform extensions Canada Water was built in the late 90s and opened in September 1999 when the second phase of the JLE opened.

So that will be the first door on the 1st car and the rear door on the 5th car which won't open at Canada Water?

Oyster (or ITSO) technology will still be required for Zip, Oyster 16+ and 60+ and for discount photocards and railcards. Contactless isn't available for those on basic bank accounts or through a credit union. What photocards are you talking about? You don't need and no photocard is used with oyster (PTAC?). Bus and Tram Photocards and Jobcentre+ photocards (formerly the New Deal photocard) are linked to Oyster in the same section where railcards are stored.

I think it is more subtle than that. As people take up the contactless payment option, oyster usage will decrease. When it reaches a certain point TFL will say as only so many % of the travelling public use it the cost outweighs the benefit and to save money we will end it. With oyster gone will there be a need for POM's? Oyster (or ITSO) technology will still be required for Zip, Oyster 16+ and 60+ and for discount photocards and railcards. Contactless isn't available for those on basic bank accounts or through a credit union.

If you live in Zone 3 or 4, it's an 80p mark-up on a paper travelcard and a whopping £1.50 in Zones 1-2!

The original newsagent scheme banned any shops within 100 yards from a station. This rule has long gone. The shop at Brixton takes cash for Oyster nowadays. I'm sure that shops will be the cash sales point for many transactions. Indeed, there's also a retailer at Leicester Square which also sells Oyster products.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned it here but along with the terrible news that there will be ticket office closures, TfL have announced the phasing out of Oyster Cards (along with the phasing out of cash) starting from 2014 but no confirmed end date. Instead we will all be forced to use contactless bank cards. This eventually means bye bye to poor people on public transport in London as there are over 1 million people without bank accounts in the UK and that figure is rising. I guess they are going to have to walk miles to work.... And those who have basic bank accounts in most cases will only be issued with a chip and pin Visa Debit card and not contactless. If TfL want to maintain free and discounted travel for certain age groups, Oyster or an ITSO equivalent will be required to ensure those who are entitled to the likes of Zip 11-15, the Bus and Tram Discount and Oyster 60+ continue to do so.

Those TfL Travel Information Centres are going to become very busy with not just tourist traffic, but other customers with issues with Oyster, adding railcard or B&T discount cards etc.

Is there a speed restriction on the northbound direction from NXG at Silwood my train went very slowly past the works. Most likely you were approaching a red waiting for a train off Clapham Jn to clear? No, in front was a New Cross to Dalston Junction and in the other direction a West Croydon.

A section of the island platforms 3-4 has been fenced off with work there as well. This is making the already short platform single file only in parts.

The Northern line platforms and ticket hall are closest to Embankment station with a 2 minute walk along Villiers Street. The Bakerloo platforms at CX are of course slightly further away but are connected via a walkway to the ticket hall.
From what I recall, Embankment was known as Charing Cross, then Embankment Charing Cross, the Northern line station as Strand and the Bakerloo ticket hall as Trafalgar Square. It all changed in 1979 when a rebuilt Northern line ticket hall and connecting walkway from the old Trafalgar Square station to Strand was built when the Jubilee opened.

Network Rail won't allow LOROL to do changeovers on platform 5. I thought you may have seen me actually as I was running late on that day, my first train was a Crystal Palace, so picked it up on the return at Platform 5. It is quick as we need to get it out of the way! It may have been actually, I was on a Highbury & Islington just after 2pm. Can't remember if it was the 1404 or 1419 from Forest Hill.

Drivers have been instructed to stop at the new 'S' marker since 8th October. Much more convenient for passengers who have already had to traipse all the way along platform 3 and over the temporary bridge. The changeover you saw at platform 5 is quite rare but it happens occasionally if somone is relieving a driver early from their job for various reasons. It happens occasionally during planned engineering works but your recent observation of this would have been nothing to do with the NXG works. There is no timetabled dwell time for this. Yes, when the temporary bridge opened, I did notice that passengers were doing the same as they do at Forest Hill by walking down to the 4th car to reach the bridge, this has stopped since the S marker was moved. The driver changeover was very quick, no time for the driver to press the button which starts up the "This is the London Overground Service to...." If I wasn't in the front carriage, I wouldn't have noticed to be fair.

Possibly related to the building works, 378's on Platform 1 now stop further back, there doesn't appear to be any change to Southern services on Platform 2.
I also noticed a driver changeover on Platform 5 for the first time today.

Your post made me look at the upcoming closures list. I am astounded that the entire ELL is suspended on 23rd and 24th December. While I accept some people will take the full week off these are still working and shopping days and I'm amazed that TfL consider it viable to shut down the entire service. I know the work has to be done some time but that is a very big closure affecting a lot of people. Southern have released their Christmas changes where Southern will be providing the normal timetable on the 23rd and early closedown on 24th despite the full closure of the ELL. On the 27th, there is 2tph between Brockley and Anerley as the Outer SLL is closed with 4tph at New Cross Gate and Norwood Junction. www.southernrailway.com/your-journey/plan-your-journey/christmas-train-services

The North Greenwich starts take the pressure off those Stratfords which are busy with Westfield shoppers and London City Airport travellers.
From a personal observation, the Canning Town to Stratford section is busier than before the shopping centre opened and that was before the Olympics. It'll continue to be busy thanks to the events at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park as seen in the summer.

I was at NXG on Friday and the current footbridge is only temporary according to the sign posted at the end of the stairwell at Platform 1-2. Considering that the ELL is closed fully from the 23rd-28th December and Southern may join them in closing their services, this may be the time when the permanent footbridge is installed.

Considering how short the island platforms (3-4) are and the stairwell. I can only see a lift going in at the concourse end with passengers having to use the new footbridge.

With the installation of a new footbridge at the London end of Platforms 1-2 and 3-4, there is no longer access to the southbound LO platform 1 and Southern Platform 2 from the ticket office. Access is via Platform 3-4 and over the footbridge with signs across Platform 3.
I suspect this is conjunction with forthcoming lift installation works.

Silwood's looking good from what I saw from the ELL going northbound from New Cross Gate. There appears to be block closures of the whole ELL core on October 19/20, Nov 2/3, Nov 9/10 (H&I to Shadwell), Nov 23/24, Dec 23-28, Jan 11-12 (H&I to Shadwell), 15-16 March (H&I to Shadwell). Your post made me look at the upcoming closures list. I am astounded that the entire ELL is suspended on 23rd and 24th December. I know the work has to be done some time but that is a very big closure affecting a lot of people. NRE or Southern haven't released their engineering works timetable yet, but I'm hoping Southern will maintain a 4tph service up until Christmas Eve, although Network Rail may use the time considering the block ELL closure over Christmas to do maintenance on the NXG to Crystal Palace/West Croydon section.
