True, true. I'll see if I can get my hands on an original copy from elsewhere then. So, one final question: if I can't get a copy of 2000, is it worth trying to put XP on this machine with only 2x2Gb hard drives? Or time to upgrade either the hard drives, or the entire machine?
Thanks chaps, you've been a tremendous help.

How about downloading the missing file(s) off the Microsoft support website? Or are they all specific to the machine?

So all I would need is the CD-ROM with an original version of 2000 on, and the key (that's the xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx code yeah?). I'm sure I can find a mate with a copy... if not can I still buy it or is this version too outdated?

Where would be the best place to find a copy do you reckon?

I've got a work laptop that I'm using now, complete with a VPN connection so the speed's fine but at the end of the day it's a work, not play laptop and all internet use etc is monitored so not ideal. My flatmates also use the PC we have at home so preferably it'd be best to fix the old beast in the corner. We've all got our banking etc etc set up on it, and it's got a 2mbps broadband connection on it aswell (although I suspect the processor within doesn't make the most of the connection speed... having said that it's not the slowest machine in the world and has served us well for years now. Bearing that in mind, the best solution would be (if possible) to repair it...

I didn't go loopy on it, maybe about 30 files or so, although most of these were easily identifiable as non-system files. The PC is a little aged, hence the fact that it's only got 2Gb on each hard-drive. Maybe bearing that in mind I'd be better off trying to repair the 2000NT version that's on there already?? Or is it time to ditch the ol' girl and buy a new one!!

Ah, that sounds better! I can grin and bear it if I have to reinstall a few bits and bobs, it's the other irreplaceable stuff on it I was concerned about!

So it would basically format both hard drives on it then? Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions but this side of things 'aint my forte!!

Will doing this have any knock-on impact to any of the other stuff on the PC (existing files, software packages etc)?

I don't think I went crazy with it, but may aswell upgrade whilst I'm at it - do I need to re-install 2000 first and then upgrade, or can I go straight in with an XP software package?

lol... not sure. I was aiming for the chunkier files on the C: drive that had a "date modified" from 2003 and earlier, I assumed (wrongly it would seem!) that these weren't required any longer...

compsci - that'd be great if you could, even as a temporary fix until I upgrade to a more modern version of Windows. As I said in my original post, that PC has a static IP address that my banking software recognises, so Monday would be great!! I've got a fairly broad computer knowledge so would be ok installing a new version of Windows - but I still can't get into MS-DOS though even in safe mode (just tried it), it keeps falling over when it asks for the missing file...

To be honest no, I've only done it once before (about 2 years ago from ME to XP), is it a particularly complicated process?

Thanks - so I need to get my hands on a full version of 2000NT and re-install the whole package then?

Thanks chap; my laptop runs on XP prof, the PC in question runs on 2000NT, will that cause problems if I move the missing file across?

... but you all seem fairly clued up on these things so I thought I'd post it here. I'll apologise in advance as this has nothing to do with LU, apart from the fact that I can't get to any of my Train Sim software!!
I've I'm breaking the rules with a naughty word up. I don't mind admitting it either. I was "under the influence" last night, and attempting (unsucessfully) to clear up some space on my C drive - can you guess what comes next? Yep, Jim's very sensibly gone and deleted a system startup file (namely ntoskrnl.exe in case anyone cares). Anyway, to cut to the chase, I've located this file on my laptop and burned it onto a disk to I can copy it across back into it's rightful place on my home PC. Problem is: I can't suss out how to startup my PC just running MS-DOS and not Windows. If I could do that, then I reckon I could pop the file back in the right folder and - hey presto - Jim's back online again. The PC in question is an old work computer they were dishing out and runs on 2000NT so I haven't got the Windows start-up software CD-ROM's to re-install the "mislaid" file.
So, answers on a postcard to... etc. etc.
Any help would be muchly appreciated, all my internet banking's on that PC so without it I can't get my dirty mitts on my money! (That's my excuse for being in on a Saturday night and I'm sticking to it...)
Cheers everyone...

I've been doing some thinking. It hurt, but i did it anyway. I noticed a few people have Microsoft Messenging (or MSN) and wondered whether it'd be possible to have a virtual forum meet. i.e. 1 conversation with as many members as possible. Just a thought. I'd be intrested to talk to some folk here. (Incidentally, my MSN is ivor_hardy@hotmail.com if anyone is intrested) May I take this opportunity to congratulate you Chris, on your rather superb hotmail account name! Love it!

I found this little toy tucked away in the depths of the world wide web the other day: homepage.mac.com/balazsboros/tubetrack/index.htmlLiving three minutes' walk from Tower Gateway DLR, it actually comes in vaguely useful, especially today when it was raining; shaved off precious minutes of standing about in the rain, all courtesy of this download! Admittedly, the tube real time info may not be quite so useful to most, but for those tucked away in leafy surburbia, the National Rail options could prove rather useful one can only assume. You can of course access all the original TFL website real time info via. WAP technology too on your mobile ~ I've found it useful on more than one occasion. You still can't beat the fact that if you work in Canada Square in the Wharf, whilst descending rapidly to the shopping centre down below, that the lifts have ETA software installed and you know whether to "peg it" down to the platforms or enjoy a leisurely stroll to the DLR station. God bless technology eh?! So in summary, it 'aint all that bad, knowledge is power after all (as a wise man once said...)

Well first of all, greetings and salutations. Signed up to this forum yesterday, spent a good hour or so perusing some of the more recent posts, and was very intrigued with what I saw. I felt the inclination to reply to this post seeing as I regularly get the whole "Train spotter" realm of jokes etc etc. I must admit it's more the infrastructure that interests me rather than the trains themselves, but the more I read of this site the more I seem to learn about all sorts of tube stock! I for one will always defend an interest in the world of the railways, despite having never worked in the industry (although looking to in the future). I'm also fascinated by the fact that current members of LU staff post here - can't get much closer to the real thing than that. Keep the posts coming; I may not turn out to be the most vocal of members due to a lack of knowledge to most questions being asked, but rest assured I will remember the answers given!
A top site folks, keep the discussions flowing...
Toodle pip!
~Jim~
