Change of traction from electric to steam at Rickmansworth. The locos involved are Met No. 18 'Michael Faraday' and ex-LMS Fairburn 2-6-4T 42222:

brighamI'm unsure whether the agreement for the lines south of Harrow still exists. I doubt the 165s and 168s will be able to squeeze through the tight tunnels between Finchley Road and Baker St. ==== I'm pretty sure LNER/BR locos serviced Met goods yards beyond the Met&GC Joint. I've got the book District Controller's View - Marylebone to Rugby and the controller moans about the poor adhesion properties of the ex-LNER L3s and how they would often get stuck on the Neasden fly-under when returning on a trip to Neasden Power Station (Metropolitan) Sidings. IIRC Met freight workings were handed over to the LNER in 1937? grahamhewettWas this the thread you were thinking of? - www.districtdavesforum.co.uk/thread/19350/freight-on-uxbridge-branch

I've been reading the 'Railway Times' July 1910 online and in an article bemoaning the lack of through trains across London, there is the mention of Metropolitan excursion trains from Buckinghamshire to the south east and south coast via the South Eastern and Chatham Companies railways.
Just wondered where did these trains start from and what were the destinations available for the summer Metropolitan traveller? When did these excursion trains stop running?
Please feel free to post Met excursions from other time periods as well.

The fast lines into Marylebone (Harrow - Canfield Place) were built and owned by the Metropolitan Railway and leased to the GCR for £20,000 per annum.

There was a connection between the Metropolitan Railway and the LNWR at Verney Junction; in the early days of the Great Central Railway there was a connection between the GCR and the Met at Canfield Place; I think there was a connection between the GC and Met at Wembley Park as well.

BBC London reported on their lunchtime bulletin today that LUL have plans to close all ticket offices and axe thousands of station staff. Most stations will be completely un-staffed. According to the BBC London report, TfL have not confirmed or denied the existance of this plan. BBC London have not put an article online but the Evening Standard have published this article: EXCLUSIVE: Every single London Tube ticket office could be axed in plan to save millions

Where are these new 60mph limits? I've only been using the Met south of Finchley Road in recent months.

I found another old film with Waterloo as it's subject on Youtube. There is a brief shot of the 1940 stock in action.

Minor point, but I think missed a bit 94 70 0700001 5 GB TLK (or is it UK). At least all the mainland European stock I have seen has the country code, which is NOT the 2 letter ISO code (i.e. used by internet domains) but a unique series (more like road vehicles use). -- Nick Yes you are correct - I knew I forgot something! It is GB not UK. Always found it strange that there are two sections indicating the country of registration/origin.

As far as I know the new Thameslink stock will be 700 under TOPS.
They have expanded TOPS number range so new DMUs could be classified as classes 600-699; new EMUs could be classified as classes 700-799; new high speed DMUs/EMUs/fixed formations could be classified as classes 800-899.
Btw I thought TOPS 97 was for departmental use and TOPS 99 for ships?
====
So if I have done this correctly TOPS number Class 700 001 would be
UIC number 94 70 0700001 5 TLK
94 = (Non high speed) EMU
70 = Great Britain
0700001 = National number (TOPS 700001)
5 = Check number [(9*2)+4+(7*2)+0+(0*2)+7+(0*2)+0+(0*2)+0+(1*2)] = 45. Round up 45 to nearest multiple of 10 = 50. Subtract difference (50 - 45) = 5
TLK = Owner code (Assuming Thameslink is the owner)

There are road closures when an event is held - usually starts from 10 am on event day and ends at midnight. There are also widespread parking restrictions during an event day. You should be able to get information by emailing network.management@brent.gov.uk

I found this video by Fred Ivey on Youtube showing Sarah being hauled by a Class 90 along the WCML.
Just wondered if anyone knew why Sarah was on the WCML? The video is dated as 13/15th May 1997.

I'm surprised no one has posted this news yet.
BBC London reported on Friday (in a confusing report*) that London Overground will be completely going to Driver Only Operation (DOO) (OPO in LU parlance) by July next year with a loss of approximately 100 jobs.
*The Beeb confused London Underground with London Overground.

Why do some think that TfL taking over the SE Metro services would magically transform them?
It has been rumoured that TfL will be getting a 20% funding cut from the Govt, so even if TfL were going to take over the services, they wouldn't have the means to fund all these purported improvements.

A couple of recent happenings which seem to have some parallels with the situation on the Met line beyond Moor Park: 1) TfL have been refused to take over Southeastern services into Kent. Objections were raised by the leader of Kent County Council on grounds that services would be unaccountable locally and would focus on provision within London. Those of us on the Met line who have list our fast off peak services and have trains with limited seating have some sympathy with that view. This is a shame because, handled properly, TfL taking over such services would make sense. However, until the accountability issue is sorted, this will be a no go. Which brings me onto... I have no evidence but I do have my suspicions that the situation on the Met would have played against TfL. I know that many Kentish commuters are aware of the problems the users in the country end of the Met have had, and I'm sure that quite a few would have written to their MPs stating their concerns about TfL taking over services into Kent. Of course David Gauke, MP for South West Hertfordshire, is a Government minister, so I'm sure the Government would have been aware of the problems commuters outside London have had with TfL...

The issue of TfL charging your contactless bank card when you have prepaid for your journey on your Oyster card was featured on BBC Watchdog today. This double charging could lead to your bank account unwittingly going into the red.
Watchdog's advice is to either get shielded wallets or seperate your Oyster from your contactless bank card. Apparently TfL will be running a publicity campaign when the system is extended to the Underground.

I'm not sure when the Chat Moss services are switching to electric (the wires are already up on some sections) but there'll be some spare Pacers then. I thought the only 3-car Pacers were the class 144s operating in Yorkshire (paid for by West Yorks PTE), although I suppose there could be a reshuffle. Why are Pacers banned from 3rd rail territory? How do they manage at Southport and Hunts Cross? I believe the 3rd rail in Merseyside is at a lower height when compared to the Southern Region.
