From looking at several maps, I've highlighted what I feel works well (or doesn't) on the map and would (I feel) therefore be necessary to distinguish for a proposed redesign of the tube map: www.nationalrail.co.uk/static/documents/content/London_Rail_Tube_map.pdf- Dashed lines for National Rail services
- All symbols explained in a separate box
www.london-tubemap.com/images/layer2.gif- Avoid a geographically accurate map to avoid congestion.
- Avoid placing National Rail symbol inside the interchange symbol as this is difficult to read.
alex4d.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/tube_map_future_2007_12.gif- Avoid using bright fluorescent blue colours
- National Rail stations should be in a different font to help distinguish them from underground stations. Any stations with both services should have an Underground font.
- Avoid adding ports to the map to reduce clutter.
- Walking distances should be shown for interchanges requiring OSI which are shown on the map.
www.citymetric.com/sites/default/files/article_2015/06/london-metro-subway-tube-map.png- Use a different design from Beck's idea.
- Add route number/ code at the destination of each route.
- Add zone number next to station rather than having a shaded zone map.
- All destinations should be in bold font.
- DLR should not have separate route indicators.
- Interchanges indicated on map that are OSI should be indicated be a little "walking man" symbol
- Major parks should be shown on the map
- Line name should appear above the line in Central London.
General comments:
- All stations with step free access should continue to be shown on the map.
- Avoid concentric circular maps.
- Remove the cable car from the map.
- Distinguish between DLR, Underground, Overground (with separate route indicators) and Rail in the info box.
- Increase the size of the tube map.

This is quite a smart buy by TfL.... after all they have just been awarded suburban London commuter routes.Alongside the converted diesel Schoma locos, once Crossrail is complete it will negate, or at least reduce, the need to hire in mainline locos (Metronet contracted five Class 66 locomotives from GB Railfreight) for engineering works across the Underground/Overground/Crossrail/TfL Rail networks. As far as I am aware, its just plans at the moment, nothing is set in stone just yet.

There was an interesting thread on another forum about the "Southern" franchise, which is actually owned by Govia Thameslink Railway. The general consensus there appeared to be that they do a decent job out of a difficult situation but could improve on customer interaction.
My only experience of the line is taking the West London route which, by and large, has served me well enough.

Ah yes, reminds me of some tedious second moment of area calculations around "I-Beams" from years ago! Thanks for the info!

What does bullhead and flat bottom mean? Thanks.
Paul
PS: I took the shuttle Chiltern service yesterday. It didn't seem to slow down, but I wasn't paying attention much either, was very tired!

Disastrous news for commuters, but fully appreciate that the safety of staff and passengers is paramount. I was caught up in this yesterday evening. Waited nearly thirty minutes for an Uxbridge to then be told it was going Northfields and that the line was suspended.

The station announcements sometimes start with an automated voice of a lady saying "Customer service update..." and then informing customers about how the service is performing. It always reminds me of that lady from the film, Office Space, "Corporate Accounts Payable, Nina speaking! Just a moment!"

I remember the fun I had in late September trying to get an odd-period 18+ discounted Travelcard AND avoiding an LUL ticket office in the process (station supervisor at Hounslow East sold me one in July with no issues). Unfortunately it is not possible to get any Travelcard with the 18+ discount online. It is certainly possible to get a Travelcard with 18+ discount online, I did it just yesterday. Strange, when I try adding a travelcard it just gives the standard price.

I have to say, the 2/3 zone thing looks silly in my opinion. Far too congested and not clear at all. They didn't need to highlight a whole region of zone "2/3". They could just do what they did before and have the station in a white box and redraw the zone 2 to 3 boundary lines. Gif map is available here: tfl.gov.uk/cdn/static/cms/images/tube-map.gifEDIT: I also believe the step free access to platform icon has a slightly thicker blue colour, which I think helps a bit.

It won't matter anyway with the Met line extension and if this sort of revision will take place, why not put the Uxbridge and Heathrow branches closer together on the map too? It just opens a can of worms unfortunately.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas. Mine was largely a quiet one, but that is how I like it. I quite liked the Frankenweenie film they showed on BBC 2.

I would say Rayners Lane WB platform, reversing onto EB tracks is a very uncommon move. I recollect being a passenger on that day and seeing lots of people going down onto the platform, expecting to go to Uxbridge and being very confused indeed!

TFL must still be optimistic (though I use the term loosely) considering that Piccadilly line stock train still has the night tube decor on it.

Without wishing to reopen the bus service thread, I note that there will be no Olympia (District Line) train service from the morning of 24 December until 2 January. Try finding that info on the TfL closure website! Very odd that this isn't mentioned on the track closure pdf, but they DO mention closures on weekends FROM the 2nd January! content.tfl.gov.uk/track-closures.pdfPaul

Am I right in thinking this train left the depot yesterday? I was on a southbound met line and a train very similar to this one whizzed by at ~11:45 am at Northwick Park. It was on the slow northbound met tracks which I found strange as to why it didn't use the fast tracks. I then later saw a freight train on the Chiltern tracks!

Is the purpose of having 40 minutes waiting time from LU to NR to account for people arriving at the station early ahead of departure?

I'm going to gatwick on 9th of Jan and I'm praying oyster gets accepted before then. The last time I went to Gatwick a couple of months ago, we went via Clapham Junction and West Brompton via the overground. We brought a rail ticket from Gatwick to East Croydon, exited Croydon, and then re-entered the station with our Oyster card's. This saved us a bit of money. Paul

Couldn't the fast line platforms get "removed". That way, you could build a wall or something on the fast line side. For Southbound, couldn't you extend the platform over the siding. (If it gets a more frequent service I mean, for the current service, the current situation is good enough). Retaining platforms is always useful in case of emergencies. I recall reading somewhere that Virgin trains cannot stop here anymore during match days because the newer trains aren't compatible with the platforms, though I don't understand the full details. The staff here also delay opening the tensabarrier if the train is delayed. Prior to this, in the old station layout, you'd have some very old door (or gate, I can't remember?) that was locked and an old staircase leading down onto the platforms! In those days though, this was sufficient as only a handful of Southern trains actually stopped here, though perhaps the Midlands trains had a more frequent service. From the Bakerloo line platforms, even prior to the station overhaul, you've always been able to peek through to see the fast platforms. The large white archway linking the platforms, prior to its overhaul, used to allow people to travel from one side of the tracks to the other, but now it might be blocked off except on match days. Not 100% sure. Though I do have fond memories of using it to look at the tops of Virgin trains whizzing through! As a final remark, someone commented earlier they got off a Southern train to wait for a Midland's train. I'd agree with that person that it'd be pretty dangerous waiting on the platform as fast trains go by. But I presume this isn't a major concern for staff here because most people would get down at Harrow or Watford if they needed to go further North. Paul

Hello I always like to study your map of the London Underground. The work you've done is amazing. I do however have some minor points to make: I hope you find these of use/ value.
