Used Wembley Central station this week to change from Bakerloo/London Overground to the 'Southern' Service to/from Milton Keynes Central. Passengers using the slow line platforms are kept at concourse level and only allowed downstairs to platform level (Plat 5 down slow Northbound, Plat 6 up slow Southbound) approx. 5 minutes before the Southern trains arrive. A yellow/black tensabarrier blocking entry onto platforms until a staff member removes it. Is this something new ? Posters up saying wait here etc , but strolled right past them at first!

Standard practice at this station.
Very limited service so safer to keep people upstairs.

AIUI the combination of narrow platforms and passing trains causing a wind tunnel effect mean it is deemed unsafe for anyone to be on the platform unsupervised and an/or when there are non-stop trains due.

`Just for fun`, I have travelled to Wembley Central on the Southern service a few months ago, to wait for the later hourly London Midland service, which had just commenced calling, probably last June. At this time, I was able to wander over to the Bakerloo platforms and then back to the original platforms on the far side, There was nothing to stop me doing so, and I was not requested to leave the platform by any staff member. I can confirm that you do NOT want to observe the several fast trains that I did through the occasional aperture in the dividing wall from the Main Local. The suction effect is really strong.

Could Wembley Central ever see Crossrail-to-the-WCML trains (via Old Oak Common) stopping there, if the link at Old Oak is built?
The only way to safely use the WCML slow line platforms at Wembley would be to have ALL trains stop there, except freight trains running through at low speed.
But is that likely?

Couldn't the fast line platforms get "removed". That way, you could build a wall or something on the fast line side. For Southbound, couldn't you extend the platform over the siding. (If it gets a more frequent service I mean, for the current service, the current situation is good enough).

But surely not as valuable as a high frequency service. If Crossrail does go to Wembley Central, I'd assume that the value of allowing it to stop at a platform at which passengers can wait would be greater than the off chance you need to terminate a Pendolino at Wembley Central once in a blue moon.

Re discussion, there is no need to do anything re Fast Line platforms, as there is already a `wall` between boy the Slow Line platform / Fast Line Platform and Bakerloo Line / Overground Platform. Although only on 2 occasions, I have waited on the platform to change between a London Midland service and Southern service with no one asking me to leave. (albeit about 6 months ago, so something may have changed). I can understand `timid` passengers would find the experience of waiting in the enclosed space daunting when fast London Midland services pass / heavy freight trains - it is not a pleasant experience.

(If it gets a more frequent service I mean, for the current service, the current situation is good enough). Retaining platforms is always useful in case of emergencies. I recall reading somewhere that Virgin trains cannot stop here anymore during match days because the newer trains aren't compatible with the platforms, though I don't understand the full details. The staff here also delay opening the tensabarrier if the train is delayed. Prior to this, in the old station layout, you'd have some very old door (or gate, I can't remember?) that was locked and an old staircase leading down onto the platforms! In those days though, this was sufficient as only a handful of Southern trains actually stopped here, though perhaps the Midlands trains had a more frequent service. From the Bakerloo line platforms, even prior to the station overhaul, you've always been able to peek through to see the fast platforms. The large white archway linking the platforms, prior to its overhaul, used to allow people to travel from one side of the tracks to the other, but now it might be blocked off except on match days. Not 100% sure. Though I do have fond memories of using it to look at the tops of Virgin trains whizzing through! As a final remark, someone commented earlier they got off a Southern train to wait for a Midland's train. I'd agree with that person that it'd be pretty dangerous waiting on the platform as fast trains go by. But I presume this isn't a major concern for staff here because most people would get down at Harrow or Watford if they needed to go further North. Paul

There are some recently refurbished toilets at the foot of the stairs to the southbound platform.
Was up there a couple of Saturdays ago. Passenger numbers seem to be increasing on the trains.
