Rumours that the D stock RAT has been delayed which will see the A stock having another season, and thus a lift to get it through. Certainly prior to this year's Sandite season it was always understood that the A would be on the way out due to the need for this lift. Thanks for clarifying, and at the risk of causing this thread to drift away from the topic; no plans to preserve one of the RAT units?

Judging by the lack of OHLE and the more than one word being a factor, I'll say Walthamstow Queen's Road

Hope the jackpot's big, as you'll need your own private siding to store it as well! Can't see any A stock being retained for heritage operations, purely because there are so many issues to overcome, least of all where would it be stored? Acton is already too full to take any more full length trains. That means you're either looking at storing and maintaining it at an operational LU depot (and I can't imagine that going down well) or as I said someone buying them for several million and storing them at their own private siding! I thought that there is a 4 car unit of 1962 tube stock at Hainault, even tho' its privately owned? Am I right? If so, could this set a precedent for the A stock? I suppose what is less likely to happen is that they get shipped off to a heritage railway for use as unpowered towed carriages. Reasons would include their not being designed for such use and the issue of powered sliding doors... neither of which affected most of the trains they replaced 50+ years ago. Simon Also don't forget the 1960 Stock kept at Northfields. I will play the role of the optimist and say that at least one working unit would be retained, the A Stock did have a following unlike any other stock in recent history (the C Stock for example), no offence to any prjb's present.

May 2015? Are you sure? It's just that we're in November 2014 and it doesn't look like we will be bidding any of them farewell for some time.

I've done a bit of 'blue-sky thinking' on the issue and I think that maybe a half-hearted measure to ensure some semblance of survival might be to procure some Parry PPM100s and try running 4tph service if possible (maybe 6tph in peaks). The operating costs would be brought down, so Mr Osborne will be happy, there'd only be a minimal loss in capacity, so the commuter should be fairly happy, and it cuts carbon emissions, so Boris is happy.

Well I had noticed that 5234 has been parked up again at the back of the depot (although I think it has been cleaned (correct me if I'm wrong))

Any idea as to why it was allegedly unfit to run? Or is it not for public consumption?

Hi all, While I was waiting at Harrow I heard a train that didn't quite sound like an S Stock approaching, I was pleasantly surprised to see 5110 with the RAT. I managed to get a few shots of it (albeit not of great quality). Here's one of my shots: www.flickr.com/photos/127666424@N03/15272294189/

It's the headset style ones, imagine that you'd have to have some kind of in-headset radio/alarm feed.

Recently I have noticed that a couple drivers on the Bakerloo line are wearing ear protectors. Were complaints made to the management about the screeching of the wheel flanges causing damage to hearing? I am assuming that's what's prompted the use of ear protectors.

Going on that basis, I guess we should expect to see the first refreshed train in the spring of next year, and as I said earlier in this thread (or related thread), it wouldn't surprise me if certain bits (destination screens and PIS mainly) were nicked from the D Stock in order to help keep costs of the refresh down.

I'd imagine that the heritage A stock will be retained, its just the RAT that will go. If it becomes a second heritage unit (sans 5th car) or it goes on to get stripped of parts and sent for further "processing" at Rotherham will be interesting to see. I have some hope that there will be a 2nd heritage train, as far as I'm aware, 5112/3 is the one which is donating any spares and is still extant at Acton Works. Only caught a glimpse of it in November (I think). From recent photos I have seen of 5234, it's largely being used for storing spare seats at the moment.

Ah yes, I may do the second tour in June (assuming it's still going ahead), but for now I think may follow through on irishunderground's suggestion and go around Bray Head listening to the howling motors of the 8100s. I ventured out to find a C Stock on the Wimbleware (sorry if anyone takes offence in me calling it Wimbleware), but I didn't want to hang around in the crowds at Earl's Court for too long, so I bailed and took an S Stock. Ah well, I have a month or two left of trying to get a ride on one in normal service.

Sadly, I have to report that 5235 is still visibly damaged as of the last time I saw it (about 2 weeks ago from a passing train), yet it's bad that it can be seen to be damaged despite being parked up at the back of the depot. It would be fantastic to have at least one last ride on an A Stock, this year and next two years will be the only times I can realistically do it.

Evening folks,
As per the title of the thread, I was wonder if there was a possibility of the A Stock being put on for a running day this year. Specifically the Rickmansworth Canal Celebrations?

Y'know the irony is that I will off to Dublin on that day, I'm starting to feel like an DART 8100 class addict, to me they're like a greener version of the A60 Stock.

I recall hearing of calamities at both Piccadilly Circus and Harrow in the mid-nineties, so it's likely one or both of them two

All motor cars provide power and tractive effort to the train, it's only the control console on 5555 that's b*ggered. I am still surprised that 5555 got past the 1st quarter of 2013, let alone still operational in Q1 2014! I would be lying if I said 5555 is entirely worthless, it certainly is something of a curiosity for enthusiasts (and dread for depot managers no doubt). Aside from the C Stock languishing at Neasden right now, can we expect to see more C Stock withdrawals in the next fortnight?

Certainly over the past decade it has only ever been in the middle of a train, when did TBC start packing up? Shortly after refurbishment I guess it started thinking that the driver had let go of the controller all the time.

If you don't mine me asking, do you work over in Acton Works (REW/TMU)? I have nothing to do with LU, this photo was taken by former forum member 21146 (better known as bowroaduk)

Yet saying this, we were all expecting the C Stock to go from Acton, yet AFAIK 5701, 6701, 5595, 6595 were the only the ones go from there. We'll have to wait 'n' see.
