I think the first 73's entered service late 74 early 75 as I was at Ricky sdgs at the time and we were talking of how advanced they looked compared the 59's. Errrrr!.... The first '73 entered regular service 18/08/75 although the very first '73 ran on 19/07/75 as a one off to celebrate the opening of the extn to Hatton Cross.

Had a quick glance at 'Piccadilly Newsline' today. There's an article about the new trains which says that they will be coming into service 2011/12, with tripcocks fitted. New signalling will follow 2013/14, when the line will go ATO. As I said I only had a quick look at the mag, when I get my own copy I will post some more details.

Thats a bit quick!! Who's building them? I was surprised as well! It didn't mention a manufacturer, although I have seen elsewhere that the tender process has been started by Tubelines. Their website says new trains for 2014, but I know a couple of people who work for them and they told me last summer that it would be 2012.

In a nutshell, the first will be delivered in 2020.
EDIT: with problems that mean they'll have to be extensively modified... Let's not even get started on ATO... 2040 the earliest.

Is there any chance they'll use the same body shell as the rest of the JNP fleet? They do afterall have ample standing room/luggage room, and it would aid in standardisation.

I heard that Bombardier will probably not be building the trains so there is a chance of a similar design. However, just as a special batch of standard stock was built for the Picc in the 30s, I believe a special batch of 14ts should be built for the Picc, frankly with bigger windows!

The initial concept document looked strangely familiar, lets put it that way!

Thats a bit quick!! Who's building them? yes it's terrible too! It does make sense that they should come this early due to JNP having a low pay out at the moment being spent on refurbishments/new trains when compared to metronet however it is unfair on the 1973 stock!!!! ):

A bit more on this subject from Piccadilly Newsline.
There will be 92 new trains replacing the current 86.5. The first new train will enter service in mid 2011, with 73 stock disappearing by 2012. The new trains will comply with RVAR and will run initially with tripcocks, with the new ATO system introduced early 2013, with a completion date of 2014.
There will be a new control centre constructed and commisioned by 2012, with the net result being a 19% reduction in journey time, equivalent to 4.27 minutes.
There endeth the lesson.

What, precisely, is wrong with the 73ts? They are, IMO, the best refurbs trundling around.
So 4 years and the 73ts will be gone? Call me cynical but...

If it were up to me I'd replace the 1992 stock before the 1973s!

I agree! The only problem with the 73ts is their bogies are cracking up-so I heard anyway! Like the Vic Line, the stock is ok, but the trains are unsuitable for the ATO upgrade. The 73ts is probably the most popular tube stock so there will be howls of protest no doubt. I really hope the trains are up to standard. They must look stylish and functional. Bigger windows would be a start! Could we see a return to 7 shorter cars? (probably not!)

I like the 73s and would hate to see them replaced with plastic duck tape new stock. I don't think much of the 92ts or the go-stop driving that results from its ATO!

If it were up to me I'd replace the 1992 stock before the 1973s! The 1992s are good trains, they just need 100% of the parts to be repaired/replaced!

I don't think the 92ts are a total waste of space! They need a mid-life refurb in the next couple of years, and basically need to be stripped down and rebuilt!
The 73ts is old, but not in any way life expired!

Maybe they could get new trains by 2012 if they just built more trains of an existing design, like the 1995TS, but if they want another different type, it will take a lot longer, just think about how long the 2009TS and the S stock are taking to enter service.

I dont see why they gave up the idea of the space train, the 1992 stock are bad but lack of maintenance is a prob 1995 stock have only been in service for about ten years now and they are the most unreliable thanks to tubelies

I do think the 'tube' fleet needs to be more standard, instead of a different type for each line. 106 trains of 1995TS on the Northern + about 90 on the Piccadilly would be quite standard (having different equipment in the 1996TS wasn't a very good idea in my opinion), and they wouldn't have to do pre-production trains and early closures if they just got more 95s, but LU would want a new design, so they look new.

If it were up to me I'd replace the 1992 stock before the 1973s! Like others ^ I do agree. I personally am not a fan of the 1992 stocks; they do have good exteriors but in terms of the interior design its horrible! (IMO) For example the seats couldn't have been replaced for ages. And what's more, the red grab poles are starting to loose their colour....

Edwin, yes indeed it is maintenance but also the design - I dislike the style of the seats.
I do know many who actually love the 1992 stock interiors like yourself, but for me, they are just becoming a little bit dated. I too hate the lights! Its just my opinion - 1973 stock interiors rule for me.

Teh last of the A Stock will be gone by very early 2013!!!! Ok... I object to that replacement, and to the early doing away with the 73ts. BLIMEY!!!! The majority of C-Stock should be gone by then as well.
