When the Picc is upgraded in a decade or so, is it fairly likely the formation will stay as 6 long cars, instead of 7 short ones? I only ask because 7 short cars would have a slightly larger capacity, and more doors per side. And nowadays with in-cab CCTV does it matter as much if the front and rear cabs of the train are in tunnel? OR, and this is wishful thinking are we likely to see platforms lengthend to take 8 cars like on the vicc and central as part of a capacity increase? Many thanks!

I think you're getting a little ahead of everyone else there Ben ;D ;D ;D ;D
Who knows what will happen - the Picc is some time away from any form of upgrade.....

I only ask because 7 short cars would have a slightly larger capacity, and more doors per side. 7 short cars = more inter-car gaps so LESS capacity!!!!! And less space for doors!! That's why they went for 6 cars this time, even though the extra car length caused potential problems on the sharp curves which had to be solved first.

With 7 cars there will be 6 inter-car gaps, whilst on a 6 car there will be five. But the 7 car has 6 more doors per side. If the doors had the same standback space as on the six cars now, the 7 car would have a lot more space than a six car, since the extra space would far offset the space lost in an extra intercar length of around 3 foot.

An early operational concept for the Picc rolling stock (16ts maybe? Who knows!) is currently being produced. I have supplied some details on the 09ts to the JNP team for them to consider. I wrote the Operational Concept for the 'S' Stock, and all I can say is good luck to them! ;D

I hope that picture link wasn't real! ;D (I am sure it was the result of photo editing - very well done!)
Judging by the proximity of the passengers arms to the platform edges, sticking arms out at any point on the ride would be fatal! ;D

Well that train won't be for South West Trains as it has seats and they prefer to take theirs out. This looks like a good idea for the Met Lin Service instead of the S Stock, as they will be more likely to get a seat. ;D ;D ;D

According to the latest OTM the Picc is getting new trains from 2013. Haven't seen anything else on this though.

No!!! you can't get rid of the 73ts! Decent trains they are... no more 65mph runs down Crane Bank!

Well that train won't be for South West Trains as it has seats and they prefer to take theirs out. Taking seats out is the unfortunate reality. Population growth has led to suburban inter-town systems in Japan and Hong Kong get rid of "cross" seating in favour of tube style "long" seating. Come to think of it, the tube has done the same thing on the C, 73, 95/96 stocks. 65mph on a 73TS? That is MAD, knowing how slow they seem on the Heathrow branch! I would think shorter cars on the picc would be a pain to find a place for both seats and luggage!

1972 ?? The first train of 1973 stock entered service in July 1975.

All other Tube Lines trains are Alstom built - if there is a correlation the new trains may also be built by Alsthom!
Unless the 09 TS bodyshell is reused (see New and Future Trains)

Hello! I'm a new member, from Barcelona. On september 2005, I could see a lot of the newest trains of The Tube in the Alstom factory in Santa Perpètua, in a day of open doors, in order to commemorate the 150 years of "La Maquinista Terrestre y Marítima", one of the companies that Alstom absorved some years ago.

Any news about 73ts replacement yet? I guess, similar trains to those operating would be built-with all the tech upgrades of course?

The first train of 1973 stock entered service in July 1975. I joined LT in 1977 and was working on the Picc line resignalling in 1978. The first train may have entered service in July 1975 but there was still 59 stock and I think a 62 stock train in service in 1978 although the majority of trains were 73 stock. I don't know but perhaps there was a trial 73 stock unit running up and down the test track in 1972.

I am trying to recall which units were the first to be delivered. I have a feeling it was the two experimental trials units. I remember them as being parked up at the Alps at Northfields depot east end.
I was trying to recall which stock was actually delivered in its supposed year..C69 Stock?

'Tube trains under London' says that there were delays in the delivery of certain components which made the commissioning of the stock later than originally planned.

One 59ts train made it into service at the very end of 1959! Much of the 38ts was in service by 1938. Some of the Q38 stock (trailers) also made it into service in 1938. I believe the 1972mk1 stock was in service on the Northern Line by 1972 although it was virtually an add on order from the 1967mk2 stock! In recent times-no trains have been delivered anywhere near their correct date-look at the 95ts!!

'Tube trains under London' says that there were delays in the delivery of certain components which made the commissioning of the stock later than originally planned. That, coupled with the fact that the first few trains were too big for the tunnels!

The Alps are indeed at Ealing Common...The Pictures makes sense as I am sure that there was a cinema next door? You could observe the parked trains by walking down the access road ... I photo'd CO/CP and R Stock there when used on sand drag tests etc. The 1960 Stock TRT was also parked there at times. Does anyone remember the RT I think it was parked in the roadway at the Boston Manor end that reputedly belonged to a driver?

I think the first 73's entered service late 74 early 75 as I was at Ricky sdgs at the time and we were talking of how advanced they looked compared the 59's.
