Nono, only the 73,83, 96 and 95 stock are of the longer car type. 59,62, 67, 72, 92 and 09 stock cars are all 'standard' length. I see. Is it a big difference, or is it just a matter of a inches, a foot maybe? My knowledge of this kind of stuff isn't very good. D stock is also of the longer type. The difference is significant - about five feet - six cars of 1973 stock are about the same length as seven cars of the 1959 stock they replaced, www.trainweb.org/tubeprune/Dimensions.htm gives most short cars as about 16 metres and most long ones as about 18 metres, so six long cars are 108 metres and seven short cars are 112 metres

Would assume any sort of overnight train hauled by an 03 would be an engineers train! Carrying ballast and other P-way bits! Ok, so not any kind of passenger trains like i thought. I mean, i know they were used for enginering work, but those words got me wondering. Nono, only the 73,83, 96 and 95 stock are of the longer car type. 59,62, 67, 72, 92 and 09 stock cars are all 'standard' length. I see. It's only a few feet I think, it's enough that a 6 car 1973ts train is only about half a car shorter than for example a 7 car 1972ts train.

I was originally going to ask if the Class 03 switchers were still on the island, but i found out thanks to Wikipedia that they are both back on the mainland. So instead, while it may not be LU related but still IoW related, i ask you: does anyone know when they left the island? shunterspot.myfreeforum.org/D2554_about1619.htmlThe first diesel shunter (as we call "switchers" this side of the Pond), moved to the island in 1966 and was withdrawn in 1981. It now resides on the IoW steam railway. It was the only member of its class to carry a TOPS number, having survived longer than the rest of class 05 because of its isolation. I'm not sure what triggered its withdrawal - possibly because it couldn't work with new air-braked wagons. For a reason not entirely clear to me, two Class 03s were sent out to replace it. shunterspot.myfreeforum.org/03079_about1442.htmlGives 03079's sojourn on the island as 1984-1998: it is now on the Derwent Valley Railway near York shunterspot.myfreeforum.org/03179_about1422.html03179 moved to the IoW some time between 1985 and 1989, and like 03079 it moved back to the mainland about 1998, where it became Hornsey's depot shunter. shunterspot.myfreeforum.org/03059_about1450.html03059 moved to the IoW in 1988 for use on the steam railway, not the BR line. Unlike the other three, its cab was not reduced in height to fit in Ryde Tunnel. Why the liking for numbers ending in "9" I don't know! The IoWSR also has an ex-Army shunter built by Barclays - it bears a passing resemblance to a Class 06 but was never in BR use.

norbitonflyer and bronzeonion: Thanks for your help on the car lengths. I can't say i noticed it when i was in London. But then again, i was just enjoying the ride most of the time.
norbitonflyer: Right, right. Shunter. I keep forgetting that word, having grown up with American English and mostly US trains. Anyway, thanks for your help on the dates. It gives me a few ideas about a possible future layout.
The constant use of the number 9 for the Class 03's is strange, but perhaps there's some reason behind it.
I checked out the Barclays and the Class 06 and they sure do look alike.

I checked out the Barclays and the Class 06 and they sure do look alike. Not very alike IOWSR No 235Class 06Biggest difference is that fuel tank in front of the 06's cab. There is, after all, ten years between them

Ok, fine, similar. But why put a fuel tank up there? Wouldn't that endanger the crew?

But why put a fuel tank up there? I don't know, but all three Barclay designs used on British Railways had this feature 11177-11186 later D2400-D2409 204hp 0-6-0s D2410-D2444 204hp 0-4-0s, later class 06 11503-11506 later D2953-D2956 153hp 0-4-0s, later Class 01 the D2400s were sometimes reported as having been allocated to Class 05, along with the Hunslet shunters which had the same engine and wheel arrangement but were withdrawn before allocated TOPS numbers)

Well, I'm just back from a weekend helping with the IWSR steam show, especially the beer festival, 53 real ales and ciders to try..
I managed to escape working in the beer tent on Monday and had a trip to Shanklin on Monday. It rained all day, but I enjoyed the trip on the 2-car set, no I didn't get the number! On the trip out on Saturday there was a 4 car set working to cope with the additional bank holiday weekend traffic, and boy, was it needed!
The IWSR had steam-tested the Ivatt tank earlier in the week and I'd hoped to see that parked outside, but no, it was hidden from view in the works. As usual, the steam service operated faultlessly over the whole weekend, attendance at the steam show was the highest ever for a bank holiday weekend Friday; attendance Saturday and Sunday excellent, but Monday was down due to the severe rain!
Edited to add the Isle of Wight Bus Museum has recently signed a lease for the bus garage at Ryde St.Johns Road to be used as a bus museum. A planning application ha been submitted for change of use to a museum. (source: Island Railway News published by IWSR) so something else worth visiting next year.

We had to kill time until the 2pm ferry from Fishbourne; there wasn't enough time to do anything and the roads were a nightmare. The scooters were getting on my nerves - we picked the wrong week to go! The four car set was 006/7, 009 was 'on shed' and 008 was working as a two car. I recommend the Capital Transport book Tube Trains on the Isle of Wight

I'm having a day out on the Isle of Wight to go to the 150 years of IoW rail tomorrow (Saturday). I should get on a 1938 stock as well.

Earlier today, while watching my "Waterloo & City and Island Line past and present" DVD, i noticed that atleast some of the units on the Island Line had pickup shoes on three of four bogies. Is that true for all units, or just some?
As this got me thinking about modifying my EFE cars, is it only A or D cars that only have one shoebeam, or is it a mix? (I'm surprised they didn't notice this detail.)
