A crack was found, (not on the trucks but more equipment related, i will leave it there ) There was no crack. To be clear, there was no crack. plus more problems with the chevrons, ( they are moving too much - a problem found and known about from the new Vic line trains ) which lead to a entire team rushing to Neasden to pack them out, and the removal of the posi shoe gear to reach them. ;D Yes a BT team did attend Neasden to sort the Chevrons (part of the suspension system), which are now sorted with the train back out on the road (I am on it all week!). It's a pre-series train at the end of the day, we are looking for these problems so that we can get everything right in time for Train 3's arrival.

There was no crack. To be clear, there was no crack. I wonder if you would mind satisfying my curiosity prjb? The rumour mill was in full gear last week - I was told that several welds had failed on underfloor equipment casings and that a redesign is necessary to solve the issue. Apparently it will delay the S stock into service as the derailment risk is far higher than when the 92ts motor cover issue / Chancery Lane derailment brought about the temporary closure of the Central line. I would stress that this simply what I was told via the rumour mill. I dismissed it as a load of cobblers, but I'm now wondering if the bit about welds failing has any mileage. So, did a single weld happen to fail sending the rumour mill into overdrive? Don't shoot me - it's just a question!! ;D

I was told that several welds had failed on underfloor equipment casings and that a redesign is necessary to solve the issue. No welds failed on any of the underfloor equipment. Apparently it will delay the S stock into service as the derailment risk is far higher than when the 92ts motor cover issue / Chancery Lane derailment brought about the temporary closure of the Central line. The issue has caused a small delay but not a significant one. These are pre-series trains and, as you know, we are running them to iron out any issues - this was one such issue. I would stress that this simply what I was told via the rumour mill. I dismissed it as a load of cobblers, but I'm now wondering if the bit about welds failing has any mileage. So, did a single weld happen to fail sending the rumour mill into overdrive? No. Hand on my heart, we did not have a single weld fail or even come close to it. Don't shoot me - it's just a question!! ;D You know me mate, I will answer any and all questions put to me. In this case I am choosing not to publically 'fuel the fire'. We have not had any under floor welds fail, there is no risk of anything falling off (well, no more than on any other train in the world!), and whilst there has been a delay because of an issue being identified quite frankly the adverse weather has had more impact on the our program than anything else. Colin, as always - feel free to 'pm' me for a more detailed explanation. Also apologies for not replying sooner, I have been out on the train during engineering hours all this week.

Am I correct in thinking the closure yesterday was to test the new S Stock? Reason I ask is I'm thought prjb said somewhere recently that S Stock can now pass A Stock in service. A bit annoying then if they still have possessions. That aside though, I saw the S Stock at Rickmansworth yesterday (from my RR bus) at about 2030 and I have to say it looks superb - can't wait for these to be introduced.

Amersham had some upgrade related signalling work which was the real reason for the shutdown so we used the time to do some testing early morning and late evening/night. You saw the train at Ricky waiting to go north to Amersham (once the possession had been lifted).

While we are on the topic of suspension, will the ride from Baker Street to Finchley Road be any smoother on the new trains which I am sure have better suspension than A stock? I was almost thrown off the edge of a seat a time or two especially just before Finchley Road on the north bound service. I am more careful these days...

The ride on an 'S' stock is far superior to that of an 'A' Stock but, to be fair, this isn't a massive accolade as there are 50 years between them!

The air suspension should be much better. The rubber on the A stock is well out of date, although the ride has improved as the track is being replaced.
At least with a lively ride you don't fall asleep! ;D

Saw it at Moor Park today going north towards Watford/Amersham. This was at roughly 15:00, and I must say the posters advertising air conditioning on a hot day like today was not appreciated.

Failed welds? LOL are you mad?
Im a welder and to say 1/2" of a GOOD weld bead will hold 500KG.
I heard this rumour and instantly dismissed it as I see it almost impossible as I would presume the welding is done via Automatic Arc Welds or senior welders. Vibration doesnt effect welding very much/little. As your basically melting metal to create a bond between to metal materials. Well on ARC welding anyway which is what I do. And MIG.

I tend to fall a sleep after Baker Street when I usually have to get off at Kings Cross. Doesn't matter if the track is bad in that section. Trains always crawl there anyway.

Is there any news of S stock into service? Am I correct in thinking that the aim is for Summer 2010? In that case I guess it'll be in the next month one hopes ...

Speaking of which ... apparently the S Stock has been at Watford a lot recently, and the one last night had seats and no signs in the windows... I wonder if this means the day is getting closer for it to be running?

I saw it for the first time today in the middle of the Neasden flyunder with only a bit poking out, although I could see the two 'Not in Service' signs. Hope it wasn't stuck

Was at Harrow-on-the Hill today, but it still had the vinyls. Looking good! The two pre-production trains have vinyls whilst the first production train in London has none. Pre-production train 1 has all red anti-climber valances whilst pre-production train 2 has mostly black (below solebar level). This should help you identify which is which if you happen to see them out on the railway.

Yes - I am sure nobody is putting any money on when the first trip will actually be, the date won't actually be finalised until the day... And as to when summer ends - it's after the first S-stock passenger run (even if if it snowed the day before)...

Pre-Production Train 1 has all red valances because it was painted early on before we had finalised and confirmed the entire livery scheme. Pre-Production Train 2, and the rest of the fleet are all black below the sole bar level which is compliant with our design and heritage standard.

Exactly, and in addition if we did publicise an official entry date can you imagine the 'scrum' that would ensue? I suspect that there would be pandaemonium on the platforms!

In fairness to the project, we have had a fixed date that we are working towards for some time now and this fits in with the official 'Summer 2010' commitment we have made.

As with 09 stock, they (I presume) will be just sneaked in, ensuring a smooth transition, and "Mr Joe Public" not spotting the difference.

And as to when summer ends - it's after the first S-stock passenger run (even if if it snowed the day before)... As I think I mentioned before, either here or elsewhere or both, weather-wise summer generally finishes in late May. But, as the old proverb goes, "When the sound of metal cutting far outweighs the sound of A-stock motors, you can be fairly certain of travelling on an S-stock" ;D ;D Sorry metman (and others) if that brings a bit of a horror movie type feel to the whole thing ;D

A bit rubbish for those who want a ride on the first trip. Surely it's better to be vague than to specify a date, which, if changed, would screw up everyones plans. Traditionally LU/LT have never publicised the "first passenger run" of new stock. Think the 09TS, 96TS, D Stock; none of which were announced in advance. Of course the first 67TS on the Victoria Line was a different matter! Sometimes you get lucky on the grapevine - sometimes not...
