You can also use vector graphics software such as Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape (this one is free) to edit those files.

Apparently the Yamanote line is no longer manually driven; automation reduced the headway from 2min 30sec to 2min 20sec! One of the lessons we could learn is quite a simple one: all warning sounds are melodious rather than the harsh, head-splitting tones used on our railways. Even emergency vehicles use warbles, they are still noticeable and distinctive. I find it surprising that with automation they've only reduced the headway from 2min30 to 2min20. In Paris on the RER A since the introduction of the SACEM system (which is not automation but just some kind of moving-block in cab signalling) in the 1990' there are trains every 90 seconds in each direction.

In Paris they ran "Sprague stock" trains on metro line 14 (which is as "old" as the Jubilee line extension and entirely automatic). So I don't see why it shouldn't be possible to fit the required electronic stuff on old stock to let them run on the upgraded lines.

I'm interested in the trains formations used on the Northern line in the 1990's. I remember the line ran with 1959 and 1972 MkI tube stock but I can't recall how long the trains were and their formations.

Lack of standardisation and rapid turnover rates of technology and product will cost the industry a fortune - argueably more than what the cost would have been of sticking with older simpler technology and swallowing its drawbacks, inabilities and associated problems. Why TFL didn't bothered to choose one standard system of ATO for all the lines ? And I think there should be some type of "compatibility mode". A non equipped train should be seen by the system via traditional blocks and the computers would treat the whole block as occupied. Of course as the whole block will be seen as occupied it won’t be as efficient as with newer stock using moving block. The gap between trains will be greater at this place however I don't think it would be such a problem as this issue will only exist with older non-compatible stock. This stock could be moved in off-peak hours to not disturb the passenger trains.

I'm really happy as well with the work of the quizz team! Everyday they provide interesting images for us for free in their spare time. We should be gratefull. People can simply do mistakes sometimes, it happens.

I think it depends on the design. Swing plug doors are often slower than regular ones, however between 2 types of swing plug doors, you can see considerable variation in opening and closing times. I live in France and here almost all the RER rolling stock uses swing plug doors. The new double deck stock on the RER A have very very slow doors (especially the opening times), but on the RER D the doors can open pretty fast, and close even quicker than 1972 stock doors.

If you can raise lots of money, find a site it can be kept safe, gets lots of paint for free it could be done ! Finding the site is the most difficult. For the paint forum members could volunteer, each member who wants would buy 500ml or 1L of the same paint and it could be quickly done
