Well, ok ... C08's may not be the official designations ...but since the 7/7 replacement cars were built this year perhaps they should be ....
Anyway, I saw one of the cars today in service as the middle unit on a Hammersmith & City line working.
Numbered at the end of the C77 series as 6734, it looked very smart, the DM car having been renumbered 5734 to match.
Whilst the other new car is 6606 with matching DM renumbered 5606 reviving the numbers of the C69 set that was scrapped many years ago.

I wasn't expecting the DMs to be renumbered, they didn't renumber 6585 when 5585 was replaced in the 1970s. Also, was there any point in building 6606 and 6734 as the C stock will be replaced soon?

It seems that I have been living on a different planet to everyone else on DD's. Could some kind soul please explain who 'built' the bomb-damaged cars. I was around when the IRA blew up the C69 car (I missed a bomb in an arcade just off Old Bond Street by 3/4 hour when catching a Picc train home from Green Park one evening). That car was replaced by a C77 Stock one of course. However I am interested about these new replacements. Seems that I have to hold my hand up and ask!

They were given the bogies (possibly some other under floor stuff) and the drawings.

I was under the impression that the whole of the sole bar / underframe was kept, but everything above the floor is new.

Its been covered somewhere on here before I think, however it might have been on another proboards forum! Many different versions of what they are exist; the standard says one thing (which is actually sensible for once), lul have said two conflicting things, and someone else said something different.

If i've driven a rebuilt one I can't say i've noticed. However I shall note the car numbers and inspect closer as and when.
Did they spray "TOX 08" and "ELAMENT" into the red bit of the livery with paintstripper in Hungary as well? If so that would explain why I haven't noticed any newbies...

Nope ! all smart and new ... thats why I noticed as it passed me at Whitechapel !
It's presently the middle unit of a train, so that may be why you haven't driven from it.

Would it be cynical to suggest that the powers that be may be nervous of using the new car as a driving car?

Does anyone know what the renumbered DMs were? And' if C08 stock isn't the official designation, what is?

I saw 6548 at Farringdon this afternoon running as (IIRC) an Inner Rail circle. Looks like they've done a very good job on it - maybe that's because it hasn't been through the Hammersmith traun wash yet?

The two new cars were built by Bombardier of Dunakeszi in Hungary. 6548 also went to Hungary as a 'model' for the new cars being built.
Shame 5505 (to be 5606) isn't to become 5607, as we've had a '5606' before.
As a matter of interest, the original 5606 which had Keipe (or was it Kiepe?) equipment was 'stopped' on 31.01.91 and went from Ruislip to (then) RFS of Doncaster on 18.05.93 for disposal. I don't know what happened to it after that - does anyone?

That's interesting! The Hungarian Railway Carriage and Machine Works in Gyõr built stock for the Underground...and the company still exists!

Would a new build of C stock have been allowed if they had decided not to go for S stock or would there be some health and safety rule that would not allow it?

I had a brief trip (Edgware Rd - Paddington) on 6734 today.
Overall they've done a very good job with it - there are only a few detail differences which make it stand out (apart from the fact it's clean). The biggest difference is that it doesn't quite sound like an original C, but other than that you have to know what you're looking for.

What does it say under the passenger doors on the new trailers? C69s have 'Metro Cammell 1969', and C77s say 'Metro Cammell 1977', but what is it on 6606 and 6734?

Well, 6734 says Metro Cammell 1969, so I assume that part of the cars has been re-used as well...
Having had this unit as part of my train the other day.. they do stand out as being exceptionally clean!!! Still smells new as well!

Well, 6734 says Metro Cammell 1969, so I assume that part of the cars has been re-used as well... But hasn't 6734 replaced a C77 trailer? So do we now have a 55xx DM with 1977 and a 67xx trailer with 1969?

We now have two odd C69/77 pairs: 5734/6734 and the West Ham bomb unit (5585/6585?).

Well, 6734 says Metro Cammell 1969, so I assume that part of the cars has been re-used as well... When i saw 6734, after it returned from Hungary & before it's renumbering, the '1969' step-plates looked as if the were new castings, like the were simply copied from 6548 which was the 'model' for the rebuilds. 6606 had similar '1969' step-plates. So we actually have 5585-6585 ('77-'69), 5606-6606 ('69-'08), 5734-6734 ('77-'08).

Is there a reason why 5606 and 5734 have been in the middle of trains, and not at the end of one yet?

Is there a reason why 5606 and 5734 have been in the middle of trains, and not at the end of one yet? i wonder if it's a precaution ... if there is some kind of fault, for most faults it is least disruptive if it's on the middle unit rather than a leading car ! They can isolated electrically and won't sit the train down pneumatically ! (as a rule anyway !) All being well perhaps they will migrate to the ends as reforms take place. DM 5555 is a notable problem unit, so I am told, I have never, in my time on the District, seen it formed at a train end !!

IIRC, the deadman on 5555 has a habit of deciding the handle isn't depressed when it actually is (mind you, it's been a while since I've touched a C stock ).

5606-6606 is now at the end of a train. I got on 6548 today. It has a different floor, and one step-plate has been replaced with one that has no writing on it.
