The problem with the Seimens at the moment is that the train gets lost and the onboard PID's stuff up. Like this: PID: Now Approching Hallam Station. Actually Leaving Hallam station. PID: Now approching Sandown Park. Actually approching Springvale. PID: The next station is Merinda Park Actually The Next station is Flinders Street

Oh don't worry Siemens design the Passenger Info stuff for 'our' trains too, and they're usually a few stations out of sync!

I quite like the look of the Siemens trains. The front end has a lot of similarities with Siemens stock under construction for the Oslo and Vienna metros.

Thank You ,Packy, for putting Victoria on the map !
Victorian Colour Light Signals -
These show two lights, displayed vertically (as NPT 724, NPT = Newport ) for Controlled, Semi Automatic, Signals and Staggered, on each side of the post, (as G 415, G = Geelong Line?) for Automatic Signals.
The top light indicates Normal Speed, the second light indicates Medium Speed and some signals also show an additional light, below, for Low Speed or Shunting. The Medium Speed often is shown for a diverging line.
Aspects are (top over second):
Green/Red- Proceed at Normal Speed. Green/Yellow - Reduce to Medium Speed. Yellow/Red - Proceed at Normal Speed prepared to Stop at next signal. Yellow/Green - Reduce to Medium Speed. Red/Green - Proceed at Medium Speed. Red /Yellow - Proceed at Medium Speed prepared to stop at next signal. Red/Red - STOP.
These are all the possibilities and are not all usually experienced.
It all seems rather complicated compared with British Four Aspect Signalling.
Previous Semaphore signalling, some still around, used Somersault signals similar to those used from Kings Cross on the ECML.

From a few observations I think Brisbane seems to have more conventional signalling.

Vic, Signalling.
As I said not all are seen together. Basic Automatic signalling consists of Green/Red, Yellow/Red then Red/Red. The Medium Speed aspect is usually shown by a Fixed Red Light.
I expect most Drivers, as elsewhere, get the gist of it without actually translating each signal aspect as they approach.
Signal Heads were of the Searchlight type originally ( where the different colours are shown through one lens by means of a moveable slide inside). Some Multiple Lens Heads are now appearing and also Route Indicators ( eg: EB or RL ) to augment the Medium Speed Indicators at junctions.

That pedestrian crossing looks like a bit of a maze.

Well mazes generally tend to make it safer for people with no brains who just walk without looking. Funny though, when I was about 9 we were at a crossing in Melbourne and it went down, unknown to us that we were on the wrong side. Was a nice view of the train but just a little too close for comfort. As for signalling, I'd have to say we have the best Aussie signalling here in Sydney. Check out my idiot's guide to signalling at: www.trainweb.org/ttrans/information.html

Level Crossing Maze -
The crossing appears to show an Emergency Exit for slow pedestrians who are caught on the crossing after the Pedestrian gates are automatically locked. They work quite well but are no deterrant to Fools who duck under the Barriers. These sophisicated arrangements, and lights and barriers, were not installed at the various little used Country LCs that were the scene of recent Truck collisions. There road users are expected to obey the "GIVE WAY" Road Signs.

Connex used to run services in England, but because of incompetence in the way the franchise was operated, the Government removed the operating licence!!!
How are connex doing in your neck of the woods?

Out of interest, do you prefer the Alsthom X'tropolis, or new Siemens stock?

Youll probably find that the Alston train has Siemens stuff on it and the Siemens train has Alstom stuff.

How are connex doing in your neck of the woods? Connex are doing ok. Occaional delays, a few cancellations. I auctally don't eather really. I do rather like the Hitachis though, they make great noise in the loop.

Connex don't run the trains anymore, Veolia Transport do. Well that's what Connex has changed their name to but they thought they had a 'good reputation' in Melbourne so they left the branding as Connex. They've changed the branding of their buses here in New South Wales though...

Nice site there, TTran! I have to say I find it a bit worrying that they use a green and red aspect together! Goes against all of my train driver instincts! I suppose I'd get used to it if I was working on the railways over there.

I have to say I find it a bit worrying that they use a green and red aspect together! Goes against all of my train driver instincts! As far as I understood, Australian "red over green" is the same, as Russian "yellow" .

Glad you like it Alan...
You can't go wrong with Green over Red though, cos there's always a Green over Yellow before it. Makes sense dunnit.
Anyway I know nothing of the Russian signalling system Dmitri, but I'd say you're right about the Aussie Red over Green being your Russian Yellow mate...

You can't go wrong with Green over Red though, cos there's always a Green over Yellow before it. Incidentally, you mention 'X over Y' all over the place, so I'm just curious if the relative position of the signals matters (in our signalling practice it is almost always irrelevant, so 'Yellow over Green' means exactly the same as 'Green over Yellow' - 'slow down somewhat, the next signal is yellow'). And the Russian 'yellow' means 'slow down and be prepared to stop - the next signal is at danger (red)' .

ttrans (Reply #15) Link appears very similar to my Reply #9.
I think, however, that the British 4 aspect 'Green, Double Yellow, Single Yellow, Red' system is better.
LU's 2 aspect 'Green or Red' ( with 'Green or Yellow' Repeater underneath where neccesary for the next signal) couldn't be simpler.
