Thanks for posting those pics! The Australian trains always seem huge compared to our stuff. I don't know how much bigger the B83 loco is compared to a British Railways 'Deltic', but it looks good!
Keep up the good work!

Great photos. Thank you for sharing them with us, we do not get to see much Australian stock over here. Are the locos at Williamstown operational or are they static displays? They seem to be in quite nice condition.

Thanks for that latest batch. It is nice to see some British locos in there. The Beyer-Garrets were built in Manchester and were real monsters, I would love to have seen one in operation in Australia or South Africa. The H13 and railmotor look interesting - they almost have an early Underground/Liverpool Overhead Railway feel about them, although the headlight (if that is what it is) is a little overpowering.

CSLR, the carriage with the H13 target plate is a former single decker 'Bradfield' Sydney suburban motor car and at the display in that picture was also attached to a Bradfield trailer car. As for the railmotor however, it's a CPH and was recently restored by a group of State Rail Heritage apprentices, nice job they did on the b*gger too... Also, in reference to the Bradfield car with the target H13, it doesn't have any headlights. There's only 4 sets of marker lights. Those two big grey things on the roof are just air vents... Meh, while we're on the topic of heritage stuff, take a look at www.trainweb.org/ttrans/tourist.html There's some pictures that won't load yet, thanks to trainweb.org not giving me enough space...

Thanks for the info and link ttran - and thanks to packenhamtrain for the new images. The image that I was questioning was this one, posted by packenhamtrain:- The object on the roof looks like a cross between a headlight and an air-raid siren. I was not sure if it was used to dazzle the passengers or to frighten roos.

Aaah, but what is all that stuff in the background underneath the signals? It looks almost as interesting as the carriages in the foreground.

As for the pic of the CPH railmotor, well the headlight's that big simply because it is...The CPHs ran in far away areas and those headlights always gave em good lighting so there ya go...

I do hope that they are restoring those carriages. That is the one thing that I dislike about many of the preserved lines/railtours. There is often a beautifully preserved locomotive up front, but the carriages are relatively modern and sometimes quite tatty. Unless you are going to spend the entire journey with your head stuffed out of the window watching the workings of the locomotive and ignoring what you are travelling in, it really destroys the experience. If I am selecting a ride, the carriage is actually more important to me than the locomotive - unless I am up the front.

Victorian ( Oz ! ) Railways - Some comments.
Loading Guage. It appears to be about 13' 10" High , 9' 0" Wide. (5' 3" guage) - . NSW (4' 8") appears to be about the same.
"Stuff under the Signals" This is part of 'Steamrail' (Preservation society) 's Collection. This is on the Geelong side of Newport in the former(?) Workshops site. It includes Bogie and 4 wheel 'Louvre' Vans. I don't know what the 'gondola' wagon is.
The train seems to be a Steamrail Special, a number of which are run round the State annually.
Walker Railcars. These are 5'3" G. and are very similar to those on some Irish NG lines from the 1950s. They were used mainly on Branch Lines though I remember one which ran between Leongatha and Melbourne in the 1970s. I think there were two types - Motor bogie with one articulated passenger car an a larger one with artic. cars at both ends. The rather refined Blue Livery has been superceded by various Jazzy modern "liveries"
Overhead Structures. Almost exect copies of Newport - Shildon (NER) Electrification, 1915. The same Engineer designed Melbourne's in 1919 also with 1500 V and these were copied by Sydney later. (Ha Ha ! - one up on those up there! )
