Although myself, and I suppose many others, have thought of it as London OVERGROUND for many years, I'm very glad to hear its been official!  |

The colour of the ring seems to be orange. Is that just because the image quality isn't too good? That colour doesn't look the same as the existing TfL rail roundel (brown) or LU roundel (red) but maybe that's deliberate.

Very funny that Colin! I saw that too (Richmond to Croydon via Dalston) and couldn't help chuckle. The colour of the ring seems to be orange. Is that just because the image quality isn't too good? As you know, FIRST GROUP have been using the "OVERGROUND" name for years on buses, including First Hampshire, nee Southampton CityBus, nee Southampton Corporation. I may be wrong but I thought that they also used in in the Netherlands as well?

Really. I though First were creating just First on their fleets accross the country.
Is the new fleet of trains going to be in the LU livery? Or will it be up to the TOC.

TheT fL press centre's image gallery has a few interesting pictures. I especially liked the London Overground station improvements. Note how it says "G - Visable station staff". So all this time, the Silverlink stations have been manned after all, it's just that they're invisible! |

So all this fanfare - the northern bit of phase 2 is going to be fasttracked and put into phase 1 and there's some pretty new signs going to be put up. BBC News called the dalston link a "new railway". surely it just disappeared for just over 20 years ago? perhaps, for the olympics, they could reinstate the other curve, and provide trains to stratford? Can the Overground Network have these rondels as well? I guess they probably will get them, but TfL are leaving it until another time to announce to make it sound like they are doing lots of things. |

"Overground" Bus Fleetname.
The Fleetname was first used on routes to the Potters Bar area in 1926 and was taken over by General in 1927 but the routes retained the fleetname until absorbed into LPTB in 1933.

That's the original version and is only the London part of a much larger franchise. The difference with Silverlink metro and the ELL is that they will be soley under the control of T fL. |

The mayor is quoted in the press release: This will allow 'London Overground' passengers to travel between Richmond and West Croydon via Dalston Junction and is the first step towards an orbital rail link for London. Now unless I'm missing something, the proposed Overground isn't oribtal? What we need is the route extended from West Croydon - Sutton then follow FCC's Wimbledon loop to Tooting and then use the link to Clapham Junction. Thus an orbital route. Plus end FCC's poor offering to South West London. The only pinch point would be Wimbledon, but kick the tram out, problem solved. And the benfit being my local station moves over to TFL.  |

I think TfL has just invented 'intermediate' trains. ;D
But serious, just a few days ago I had a slight rant about losing the ELL from Underground to the Main Line. Now, with all this news about London Overground I'm beginning to see the whole picture.
You might consider it a 'big' train but it's not like you use the thing to visit your aunt in Glasgow. I think hardly anyone will be on it for more than 30 min. Fewer stops and higher speeds than a standard Underground train will mean relatively short journey times.

Funny how NR and LUL are becoming closer and closer. If I were really cynical I would suggest that this is the first step towards the eventual separation of deep level lines and the SSR's integration with the mainline under the Overground branding. The next step will be the physical separation of Tube lines and SS because of Disability and Accessability reasons. The tube map wont be a map of the Underground lines, but merely of TfL run services...  !!! |

That may have been the original idea when the Government came up with PPP. The East London line was left out of the PPP as it was going to be changed. To be honest I hope Ken doesnt get his hands directly on too many National Rail Services. The Silverlink services which will be franchised with input from TfL are local "inner-city" services all within London, whereas, say Southern's trains run out into Surrey CC. There probably won't be further "ownership/branding" changes to LUL SSR services, as they are locked into multi billion pound contracts with Metronet. Having said that, I wouldn't be suprised if in the next few decades (when many current senior mangers are longer around) if the Met north of Harrow only went to Watford, with the fast lines to Amersham and Aylesbury being part of Chiltern, and the Chesham branch shut.   |
