On the desination blinds on the H&C, westbound trains are put up as: "Hammersmith via Shepherds Bush". Why is this? There is no other way to Hammersmith apart from via Shepherds Bush.

There is via the District!

To add to C5´s post -
eg signal failure Padd H & C -
Then they go down a Circles (or terminate Edgw Road, but let´s just presume my first option "fx- C5 - can H&C´s terminate Edgware Road in Westbound") and then via District to Hammersmith (or stabling, depending on Train freq) and would have to put up eg "hammersmith via Earls Ct" or summat.
T/ops + Signalmens - please correct me - only I have heard it like that...

Marty, if that failure or similar did occur at Padd Sub, the H&C trains heading down the branch can either usually be - Reversed West to East at Edgware Road and run early
- Detrained at Edgware Road and sent to Triangle Sidings to reverse for their own working. The journey time is the same.
- Sent to Barking/Whitechapel etc via the District Inner Rail. These trains will be diplayed at Edgware Road as "Circle via High St Ken"
The decisions would be made based on train congestion/blocking back, headways and availabilty of Train Operators/ Crew Reliefs District Destinations that can be displaye at Edgware Road are; Wimbledon, Olympia, Parsons Green, Putney Bridge, Ealing Broadway, Ealing Common, Ealing (Sidings/Stow), Richmond.... oh and Northfields. C stock H&C trains show via Shep Bush so as not to confuse the poor passengers further!

Just to add, this is a source of constant confusion when looking at engineer train paths. Sometimes the paths created and published can be very long winded when they cross via the Circle - and thats deliberate to try and eliminate the confusion if there is more than option.

AFAIK it is to do with old District peak hour workings to Northfields.

that's confusing. so it's there in case the H&C gets diverted via district or circle to Hammersmith.

So a "via District to Hammersmith" would be a bit pointless.

Trains can't reverse from WB to EB on the District at Hammersmith. So a "via District to Hammersmith" would be a bit pointless. Except that you cannot expect the general public to have a detailed knowledge of the reversing facilities available at any particular location. I've always assumed that 'Hammersmith via Shepherds Bush' was for the benefit of those westbound passengers from points east of Aldgate East who are faced with trains calling at the same platform which then run to, or through, Hammersmith via two different routes.

The Circle is a service and not specifically a line** The "Hammersmith & City" line is the alternative route at Aldgate East. If a H&C service is travelling to it's booked destination of Hammersmith (H&C) it will been shown as "Hammersmith via Shepherd's Bush." If a H&C service is diverted on to the District for whatever reason at Aldgate East, it will be described as appropriate for it's "new" destination. Quite often, due to certain equipment limitations, diverted trains are described as "Parson's Green." Just to add to the confusion ;D **For the smart ones lurking here, not even between Tower Hill and Aldgate or between High Street Ken and Gloucester Road.

OK, realistically trains can't reverse in sevice at Hammersmith. The Piccadilly line staff would be a bit cheesed off if both roads were being crossed by Districts every so often!

In fact, it also ran to Hounslow once opon a time. I'm sure other forum members can fill in the dates.

From a technical signalling perspective there probably isn't a Circle Line. However according to tfl there is- mind you, as a punter, it sometimes seems as if it really doesn't exist! ;D The only part built specifically to form a circle (IIRC) was that from Mansion House to Mark Lane (now Tower Hill). The Met and the District didn't want to operate a circular service but were forced by an Act of Parliament. Perhaps they foresaw the problems it would cause? ;D

The part built by the Met from Paddington to South Ken was always intended to be part of an Inner Circle. The problem at the eastern end was that both the Met and the District were not very profitable, and they baulked at the huge cost of constructing cut-and-cover from Moorgate to Mansion House.
After much to-and-fro, including City interests threatening to sponsor a competitive company, the Met and District came up with a bill to complete the Circle. By this time, they had two Chairmen who were not even on speaking terms, so Parliament inserted a clause requiring that they co-operate to run a Circle service.

Nobody really owns the Circle Line. It has over recent years been left in the lap of the H&C management. Joy. However you look at it or whoever you are, officially there is just a Circle Service but not a Circle Line

"No Circle LINE" -
WTT Met. No.1 Section 1,1970, is titled "Hammersmith & City and Circle Lines".
(No.2 Section was - "Aldgate ,Baker St., Stanmore, Harrow, - - - etc. to Aylesbury".

I could sit here all day reasoning and stating facts.
However, I think you know where I'm coming from and know that there is no such rail and sleeper construction laid down that is known as Circle Line/service property.
I will leave it there.
