Rather worrying that the structure at the end of the tracks was not strong enough to stop what appears to have been a fairly slowly (judging by the damage to the first carriage) moving train.

Just to add that the incident took place at a set of stabling sidings beyond De Akkers, the southern terminus of Rotterdam Metro lines C and D.

When I first saw the photo thumbnail on Twitter, I thought it was a retired Metro train art installation a la those Jubilee carriages on top of the building near Shoreditch...
Some supreme luck there in how the accident turned out.

This reminds me of the Malaysian Adtranz overrun incident which was quite similar. "When trains couldn't wait to go off the rails" HEEHEE

I've heard of jumping the shark, but this is ridiculous.

Was there a similar Incident, minus the Whale, at High Barnet years ago, somewhere around the 1960's

Was there a similar Incident, minus the Whale, at High Barnet years ago, somewhere around the 1960's I can think of several such incidents, at Stourbridge Town, at Shepperton, at Largs and at the original Island Gardens DLR station. But at High Barnet the ground rises steeply beyond the station, so it is unlikely that an over-run would get very far.

There was another similar (but not quite so dramatic) collision in the sidings at High Barnet on the Morning of 28/2/1975, which was naturally overshadowed by events the same morning at Moorgate.

Was that REALLY the driver's name? Depends if 'Natorman' was his first name or job title.

I stand corrected. These sidings are at the "London" (south) end of the station where the ground level is lower than the tracks (and the line passes over the Great North Road) One more I remember - this is Staples Corner on the North Circular Road. And another, a little before my time - Paris Montparnasse

The quoted incident involved the shunt neck for the sidings, which finishes above a quite steep drop to the Great North Road below.

I seem to recall the Staples Corner incident investigation found it to be due to trespass and vandalism.

Was there a similar Incident, minus the Whale, at High Barnet years ago, somewhere around the 1960's glad my memory wasn't playing tricks, well before my time however as I started on the Northern mid 90's however I seem to recall the cause of this one was a driver trying to save time by closing the drivers brake isolating cock, (DBIC) while approaching the stops, in order to save time. Effectively switching off the main braking system before stopping.

Was that REALLY the driver's name? I just like the fact that the picture is credited to Keystone Press. Pity no cops visible though....
