Where was that?
I've seen similar-ish at Queen's Park, but nothing quite the same.

Those look like converted wagon buffers. We used to make buffer stops, usually out of bent rail. Apprentices would turn them out as an exercise. Now we appear to import them!

These days buffer stops are less there to stop a low speed misjudgement or to buff up against, and more to provide a controlled retardation. There's a lot more science in it now.

I believe there is a similar buffer stop at the end of the blind tunnel in London Road Depot.

Import them, the buffer stops or the Apprentices ? I dread to think. Anything can happen now that taking coals to Newcastle is 'normal'.
