I'm given to understand that even on those Thameslink services which are advertised as having First Class, only the First Class section in the leading car is actually limited to holders of such tickets - the one in the rear car is always declassified (although Chris L's experience of the screens informing you of declassified sections is rare in my own experience). Which makes you wonder why they provided two First Class sections in the first place. Indeed, there is no way that a 12-car unit can get turned round in normal service, and it is rare for an 8-car unit to be used on a two-class service.
The screens reporting loading levels are very slow to update - you often get a train leaving a central London train in the evening peak proclaiming there are plenty of seats even though the train is full and standing - even more noticeable on SWR's 707s which arrive at Waterloo in the evenings fairly empty, but don't update until the rammed-solid outward bound service is almost at Vauxhall.

I suffered from a very significant fares disparity last week - in short I was charged £2.80 for a journey to Ilford (TfL Rail) when the journey from Gants Hill is £1.50. I was only expecting to be charged the usual 40p surcharge for travelling to Ilford. My return journey had to be to Ilford (instead of Gants Hill) to collect a prescription from a chemist (the doctor sends it through electronically but it is collected by me).
I queried this fares discrepancy when I arrived at Ilford and saw how much I had been charged and to my astonishment the ticket office people told me that this was the correct fare.
My outward journey was to Crouch Hill and my return journey was from Upper Holloway. In both cases I travelled via Stratford and Gospel Oak, using pink card readers at these stations.
I did not want to interchange at Leytonstone / Leytonstone High Road because its a long walk and using a bus breaks the Out of Station Interchange (OSI) through fare. I also did not want to interchange at the Goblin stations near to Manor Park or Forest Gate, as have never travelled those ways before and was not in a mindset to explore the local streets.
As an aside, the station that would have suited me best would have been Crouch End - just a few stops north of Highbury & Islington. But of course that has been denied to us.

You could avoid this by changing which pharmacy you use, the NHS Electronic Prescription Service allows you to collect your medicines from any pharmacy in England.

Just in passing my Uncle Geoff once told me that one of the last last legal things the old LNER solicitors department did was to obtain a legally binding agreement from the LPTB that the fare from Stratford to Liverpool Street would be the same, wether surface or underground. This as a pro quo to allow for the LT take over of the Epping/Ongar line and the Fairlop loop and for the provision of the LT platforms at Stratford. What was more interesting was his comment that this agreement was legally binding ''in perpetuity'', which I take to mean for ever. I wonder if it still stands.

It does indeed still stand; fares between Liverpool Street and Stratford are fully 'inter-available' - same price, same ticket is valid via either route.

Intermediate stations to Upminster were BR owned/staffed till c1970,even though most of them had no BR trains. What about Emerson Park? Is it the same price or same Oyster debit whether you travel to Liv St via Romford or Fen St via Upminster?

Wonder when that changed, as I know from some relations who lived there that the fare via Upminster was cheaper, even though it took longer. This was presumably a hangover from the Midland/LTS era, pre pooling agreement. Not that many people used the Halt.Could you even buy a ticket there? Another relation who lived in Whitehall Lane, Buckhurst Hill used to buy his season ticket at Liverpool St main line office, as it was then issued on ticket stock which gave him the alternative of BH or Chingford (from which two stations he was equidistant) even well into LT days.

It does indeed still stand; fares between Liverpool Street and Stratford are fully 'inter-available' - same price, same ticket is valid via either route. A similar anomaly exists between Finsbury Park and Moorgate, with tickets being ‘inter-available’ on the direct service via Drayton Park or to travel via Kings Cross and then by tube. This dates back to when suburban trains from Welwyn Garden City or Hertford North ran to Moorgate via Kings Cross York Road, Farringdon, and Barbican. When the Great Northern Electrics scheme took over the former Northern City Line, I believe there was a similar guarantee that fares via Essex Road on the direct route would be the same as the old route. Indeed, the cash fare between Finsbury Park and Moorgate on TfL’s Single Fare Finder is £4.90, the same as that shown on various Train Operating Company ticketing websites - even if you select ‘via Kings Cross’. (There is, of course, no National Rail service from Kings Cross or St Pancras to Moorgate, and hasn’t been since the Thameslink expansion of Farringdon cut off the Widened Lines route to Moorgate)

I am trying to get my head around fares to the western end of the Goblin.
To go to Gospel Oak (from Gants Hill) the fare is £1.50 off-peak providing I either travel via Stratford (where the pink oystercard reader must be used) or via Leytonstone / long walk / Leytonstone High Road. Although not stated its my understanding that using a bus between the two Leytonstone stations will break the through fare.
Gants Hill - Crouch Hill, Harringay Green Lanes or South Tottenham is also £1.50 (off-peak) but no route is specified.
However, for Upper Holloway the £1.50 fare is only available if you change trains at the Leytonstone stations, which is an inconvenient long walk.
This sounds wrong and inconsistent.
