Update on the first train that will enter service “later this year”: Train appears to have new/refurbished front destination displays, of upper and lower case.

I like that the grey is panels rather than all over. A quick online image search seems to suggest this is fleet wide though, is this linked to our one-time longest thread Less tape on cabs?

I rather like the fact that, although this is a very modern design, it actually looks like, wait for it-a Tube/London Underground train.
Well done-surprising how easy it is to lose your key brand image in working with today's 24/7/365/everythinghastobedoneatthespeedpoflightworld.

Doesn’t look like the cab ends have touched other than the destination display… they were all replaced several years ago which led to the more red / less gray look.

External destination display must be new, the current ones don't have fine enough pixel (individual LED) resolution to do the upper and lower case characters shown. A bit small on height but I guess it wasn't practicable to make the aperture taller. Usually that sort of thing is limited by existing internal structure.

Thank you for sharing the photos.
Ostensibly 'wasted space' above the single line of LED, so much so I reckon they could have had a screen double that size in LCD. I know we've discussed this before but just saying.
Also I spot an old speaker, which means I take it the replacement speakers either haven't been added yet or fell out of scope.

An LCD display on 507/521 bus based at Waterloo lasted a week before bubbles appeared in the screen. Changes in temperature to blame. White LEDs would be much clearer.

How is it "a very modern design"? Just looks like a sight tweak to a a mundane 30-yr-old one!

Looking good. Have they given the front a lick of paint? It looks a lot fresher…. I assume the next thing to do is to take off all the social distancing signs.

Just arrived for my shift at Bethnal Green and I caught the train coming into Bethnal and departing (on a test run). The train does look cleaner and it seems to accelerate faster. Yes, for anyone wanting to know, it does sound very much the same as the S stock so it’s bye bye washing machine motors 😞

Do we know if they intend to push individual trains into customer service as soon as they’re completely refurbished and tests are done or will they be rolled out in batches?

I would guess as soon as the current CLIP trains go into service, it would be one train goes out of service, one refurbished trains comes in and so on?

Any more news on when we will finally be jumping on board one of these?

I imagine the trains will be gradually rolled out into service once successful tested and completed. We already have a shortage of available trains, so having them all gradually out of action so they can all start service at the same time would cripple the line. I read the first train is expected into service some time this autumn, but I’m just going to say watch this space.

Papers of the Programmes and Investment Committee meeting for 5 October 2023 have "Expected outputs to March 2026" for CLIP project showing "by March 2024, first CLIP train return to service". Pleasing to see also by then "contract award for seats overhaul".

Maybe at first it will be on light duties - such as Hainault - Woodford!
As the train lays over (at Hainault) in the platform it would create time to explore the visible changes without a crowd of passengers in the way

There must be some lessons to be learnt from CLIP about biting off too much at one go for future projects replacing obsolete equipment on, say, 96TS etc.

Is there any chance that “by March 2024” could actually mean that it will be in service earlier than that? And could there be more delays and it be pushed back another year or so

I was speaking to someone involved in the project a few days ago and they informed me that the current goal is to get the first train in service by the end of November. Let’s not hold our breaths on this just yet, but that is the aim.

Just seen this on X/Twitter. Posted by Ross Lydall City Hall Editor & Transport Editor, Evening Standard.
CCTV is being introduced on Central line as part of £500m refurbishment of all 85 trains. First “new” train will re-enter service in a fortnight - with new seating too. (@tfl is keeping the moquette pattern and name under wraps till then.)

Interesting piece, however, there's a somewhat ignorant comment at the end from a Jon Smith about unions being paid to allow the refurbishment. Clealry ill informed. Maybe someone could put him right?

I wouldn't bother based purely on personal welfare grounds. There are plenty of resources on industrial relations if people want to read up. The choice of a newspaper comment section suggests less of a willingness to enquire and more of a desire to rant at the clouds.

The name is upon reflection of the Central line's history, as Seb Dance had pointed out in the video below the tweet. My bet is that it's along the lines of "Twopenny tube".

Very glad to finally hear news of a date for the first train entering service. Feels like it's been forever but I'm glad we finally know, and glad there'll be a new moquette too.
