AIUI all units still have a lamp iron so that in an emergency situation a tail lamp can be hung on them if the power/batteries fail. Mostly used when a dead train is being rescued.
Modern lamps are battery powered LED jobbies though.

(couldn't find the original thread, please move etc as appropriate) Now these are getting more common, I've started to notice little things about them. On a super high-tec train, I have just noticed they have a lamp bracket on the right hand side of the front about half-way up to the side of the evacuation door. It looks like it may be a retro-fit? Is it a requirement of the underground section? I wonder if they still carry a lamp to put on there (presumably a rear lamp, and battery-powered I assume, not oil...)? I've moved your post and one other into this thread.
Remember that you can use the search facility to find threads. It's one of Proboards' most useful functions.

I cannot remember where but I thought I read somewhere that the last 313 in normal passenger service on this line will run on 30th September 2019. After that its 717 only!
Also, I was at Drayton Park today and to my surprise I found that the doors in the last car of northbound trains do not open "due to short platforms" - even though the car is fully berthed at the platform.

Indeed; there is a farewell railtour planned for October - it sold out within 24 hours.

313’s all finished on Great Northern now. 717’s now rule the roost on the Northern City.

Indeed; there is a farewell railtour planned for October - it sold out within 24 hours. Of course this is not the end of the 313s - some are still in full daily service on the south coast (Brighton, Littlehampton, Eastbourne, etc). For how much longer remains to be seen.

My son is assistant fleet engineer for the Southern franchise. The 313s will soldier on quite a bit longer yet on the coast lines!

My son is assistant fleet engineer for the Southern franchise. The 313s will soldier on quite a bit longer yet on the coast lines! The only possibility for their replacement is if the DfT chose to continue their ‘new train’ fetish when the Southern franchise is renewed. Based on past experience then bids which do away with the 313 and 455 fleet would be looked upon favourably. Of course there is no guarantee the current decision makers will still be in there jobs next year - let alone 3/4 years hence....

The 313s there are pretty much already PRM compliant.

Back on topic please. The discussion on the use of class 313’s on National Rail is beyond the scope of this forum. In any case, this thread is about class 717’s on the Northern City Line, which qualifies for discussion due to it being a former London Underground line.
