I've come across some conflicting information about this, so if anyone can help answer these questions it would be much appreciated.
1) When were Tunnel Cleaning Trains introduced? (I'm especially interested in when they started on the Northern Line.)
2) How regularly do they run? Is it every night on all lines or is there a less-frequent schedule?
3) Do teams of 'fluffers' still manually clean the tunnels? If not, when were they phased out?
Thanks!

Gangs of women used to clean the tunnels with brushes. These were the fluffers. They were phased out when the original train was introduced.
Now cleaned by crews with back pack vacuum cleaners.
The original train needed to work at 0.5mph to be effective. They found it very hard to achieve this with the rise and fall of the tunnels.

From 7:14-7:16 of the video there is a plaque recording that the 38TS train was converted in 1976.
Does this suggest when 'fluffers' were no longer required ??

Is the AIT scrapped too? There doesn't seem to have been any news about it for ages.

Whether a plan emerges to do so in the future, who knows. It was planned and in the contract with Thales to be ready for the first migration. Now read that it was to be delayed/reconsidered. content.tfl.gov.uk/fpc-160121-item11-four-lines-modernisation.pdf

The tunnel cleaning train has not been scrapped just yet. The actual vacuum car may have, but the MPU (multiple pow unit) is still sat around in a half built state.

Remember when the tunnel cleaning train got derailed on Railtrack tracks on the way to Stonebridge Pk Depot,When it was rerailed & stabled in Stonebridge Pk Railtrack refused to let back on their tracks. It had to go back to Acton as individual cars on low loaders.I was one of the shunters who had to move each car to 45rd with a 4 car 72 TS.
