Hi everyone
For the last year i have been using the central line between Stratford and Gants Hill. Some of the noises this line makes are crazy loud, the first lot of noise is leaving Stratford east bound where it dives into the tunnel making all sorts of banging and clanging kind of noises. But the worst noise I think i have ever heard on a tube line is going from Wanstead to Leytonstone it must be about 20ish seconds before exiting the tunnel that this very loud sound that lasts around 3-4 seconds occurs. I cover my ears every time as the sound is just awful and i've noticed other passengers doing the same. Is anyone familiar what i describe? What is causing it?

Could you describe the sound for those of us who don't regularly ride this part of the Central? Is it a sudden inrush of air, or something different?

I suppose its kind of like a grinding noise, its hard to describe in detail. Tomorrow i could take a recording of it and upload it here/somewhere else.

I know exactly the noise you describe, living on the Hainault branch too. The noise started after a weekend possession, so I'd think its probably to do with either rail grinding or some adjustment to the cant of the track. I'm sure some of our members who are Central line drivers or station staff, who will be more knowledgeable, can conform or correct my suspicions.

I have the same suspicions Mind you, for me personally, I always found Wanstead to Gants Hill to be particularly bad for wailing rails.

I've also experienced the problem between between Wasnstead and Leytonstone, as well as the general noise from the track throughout the extension. I wonder if it is in part due to the substrate of the tunnel invert from its use as a factory?

The factory use was 4 years of light engineering, with wheeled trolleys. I would imagine not significant compared with heavy EMUs over 65 years or so, packed with an enormous human freight

Bethnal Green now sounds the same. There was works there overnight late last year.
From what I've heard from management is that it is to reduce noise being heard from street level and the buildings above the line.

Can anyone who's used both say whether the noise referred to here is as bad as some areas of the Victoria Line, north of King's Cross.
That was truly awful - although I must have become inured to it as I can't even remember if it's improved of late.

That blog was an interesting read. So its ok to reduce the noise for those above ground but they don't care about the culmative hearing damage that the passengers are receiving? Anyone know who i can write to in this regard? In the mean time i think ill buy some ear muffs.

If you think that noise levels are affecting your health contact your local council who will investigate on your behalf. www.gov.uk/noise-pollution-road-train-plane/railway-noiseI suspect that was written with trains in open section in mind rather than in deep level tunnels. I'd guess the noisy section is LB of Redbridge

Under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 anything over 85 decibels is regarded as a hazard to hearing

I notice that this issue now seems to have been fixed. I wonder if this thread was fed back to management somehow? Or, do they have CCTV in the trains? Maybe they saw me putting my finger in my ear at exactly the same place every day!

After trains have run along the grinded track for a few weeks the noise dies down

I saw somewhere earlier today (Todays Railways UK, I think) that at an unspecified future date this section of line is to be relaid.

From the cab you can see the section of track Wanstead - Leytonstone Westbound where the noise was worst has new rail clips although its hard to tell at 65kph if these are the Pandrol Vanguard system I think was mentioned (hey, I just drive the trains........).
I'll be going Eastbound from White City in about ten minutes and see if I can spot new clips anywhere else.

On the approach to Notting Hill Gate, although these have recently been replaced again to reduce the noise in the tunnel.

The noise has started to get louder again. It was alot quiter for a few months but it has got notably louder and i am back to covering my ears with my hands and i notice others doing it also. Not good at all, i am glad i am only using this line ten minutes each day. I assume drivers are wearing ear protection.

Wanstead to Leytonstone is the worst noise I have experienced on all lines and one that has been there for longer than i would care to remember. A part of the westbound between Stratford and Mile End would have a podium finish in the noise levels stakes!

Even 50 and more years ago the Central between Bethnal Green and Leyton, where I was a regular (albeit young!) user, was extremely noisy - and with a very lively ride as an added attraction.

According to the article below, the noise issue between Wanstead and Leytonstone was recently raised with TfL at a transport scrutiny meeting in Redbridge. Directly from the article "... The issue first arose when TfL inserted a large piece of rubber into a section of the underground to stop the line being so noisy for residents living nearby. While it did decrease the sound by quite a few decibels on the outside, it made it louder for those inside the carriage. We are going to replace sections of rail in October with high quality steel which doesn’t degrade as quickly – We are really hopefully that it will reduce the noise,” www.ilfordrecorder.co.uk/news/the-central-line-is-getting-new-air-conditioned-trains-1-5115247
