I'm surprised Whitechapel signal cabin was retained - is it permanently staffed? Yes, permanently staffed although the area can now be put into automatic working, hence the illuminated "A" next to semi-automatic and 'X' signals when this is switched in.

It is still the same as my day. Elm park was in the twilight zone where a train disappeared off the radar between Upminster and Barking cabins.
And I would like to know about Whitechapel cabin controlling the crossover and Shoreditch working on the east London line.
I believe the railtrack signalling centre at Upminster controls the north London line and maybe more, and not just the C2C.

And I would like to know about Whitechapel cabin controlling the crossover and Shoreditch working on the east London line. Nothing to know - the junction connecting the District to the old East London line was removed & plain lined when the East London line closed for conversion to become London Overgound. Whitechapel signal cabin now deals solely with the District line at Whitechapel and that's it.

Most of the automatic sections east of Whitechapel can not been seen on any diagram.
Trackernet can show where the trains are roughly by the Connect radio areas but its not always accurate.

How many will be left when the SSR signalling upgrade is complete? Signal cabins? None as everything will be centralised at Hammersmith.

In the good old days the Wimbledon branch was controlled by Earls Court as far as Putney Bridge, just on the bridge around the change to BR traction current, then East Putney, Cromer Road, Southfields, Revelstoke Road, Wimbledon Park and Wimbledon. Revelstoke Road was usually unmanned and the signals there were intermediate block home signals, controlled by the box in the rear.
Turnham Green to Richmond was controlled by Earls Court to the BR boundary, then Gunnersbury and Richmond. there were no signals at Kew Gardens, the only station on the Underground with no signals! There were intermediate block signals on east and west bound (or up and down lines in BR terms) a distance from Kew Gardens Station. Remember there was a connection with the south western at Richmond until the early 1970's resignalling which saw the end of semaphores on that line.

Technically Olympia doesnt have a starting signal either. WB7 can not be seen from the platform and drivers are to leave to there booked time, or of course when they are told too. This signal automatically clears when the train has berthed in the platform and the same goes to the shunt signal all depends what description the train has.

What happens if the train is incorrectly described or re quires to be put away early/extended.

The olympia line from earls court can show only 2 descriptions olympia and west ken special. When olympia is used then WB7 clears automatically and when west ken special is used WB27 clears. If they want to change there minds they can as always and manually work the site the same way as anywhere else

The reason I ask about Olympia specifically is surely with most termini - and even other locations - you get a bit more of a grace period, as I hadn't thought sticks regularly cleared long before the scheduled departure time.

I'm sure there used to be a starter at Oly in my days, it protected the ground frame connecting the DR with BR.
