I have seen s stock test trains at upminster at 7:55 in the morning for the past two days. Is this a sign that the withdrawal is due

I'm hoping it will be like when the C-Stocks went; they seemed to be hanging on forever, then it felt like there was a sudden influx and they were all gone before you knew it!
Although, on this occasion, whilst I do want to see more S-Stocks operating on the District main, I will very much miss the D's. There's something rather comforting about them!!

If you're interested in making sure you have photos of all the D stock fleet before they go you might want to make sure you have 7058/7510 and 7082/7065 by next weekend.

It starts on the 19th of January. What's happening on that day? I would suspect from the less than cryptic clues given that D Stock withdrawals may be starting on that date. Whether or not that turns out to be the case remains to be seen. Either way, it could be a useful heads up for those requiring photos.

And so the demise of the D stock begins . . .

1. it still seems unclear, will the d stock be put to further use or scrap?
2. When will majority of services start to be formed of s stock?

AFAIK, most of the D stocks have been purchased by "Vivarail" who will convert one of the trains into a trial of the D Train, to let potential users (Northern) to assess it and put together plans for use in franchise bids. I'm assuming then that most of the stock will be stored somewhere between withdrawal and potential conversion, but a number of trailer cars will be sent for scrap, and there will be a number of double ended units that are going to be converted for use as RATs.
As for the majority swap to S stock, I would guess that in the may timetable change the restrictions on only given trains operating as S stock will be lifted and they will start to be used interchangeably, at which point, the mass changeover will start to occur, but I'd wait for someone "in the know" to confirm that

Thanks for the info. And so the demise of the D stock begins . . . Depressing isn't it? Indeed. The D stock were the trains I used to start many of my underground roamings back in the late 80's with Becontree being my local station, However, I had more affection for them in their pre refurbished state; just how they were in my exploring days!

1. it still seems unclear, will the d stock be put to further use or scrap? I thought I was quite clear when I said above.... It is planned to have 12 D stocks replaced by S stocks between 19th January and the May timetable change. Aside from a couple of "double ended" units being converted to Rail Adhesion Train's, they will not be put to further use by LU. There is an apparent plan by a company called Vivarail to rejuvenate them as diesel trains but I'm skeptical as to how viable that plan is. In any case there's only so many places LU can store excess rolling stock, so by the time we get to the 12th S7/D stock swap out D stocks will be leaving LU metals for good. If Vivarail change their mind, they will go for scrap. 2. When will majority of services start to be formed of s stock? The simple answer at the moment is nobody knows. Well some senior management probably have an actual plan with actual dates on it but its not been shared yet. There are around 20 or so S7 stocks built but not being used. Some are already with LU - we have three sat in Upminster depot doing nothing for example - but we can't realistically fit any more in till space is made by removing D stocks. Once we reach May I would expect that the changeover will run at around two per week, so maybe somebody can do the maths from that..... As things stand at the moment though, S7 production has been temporarily halted whilst the 5th cars are built for London Overground, so we're not in a rush to fully replace D stock just yet.

Will the withdrawn D stock be taken by Vivarail or scrapped? Presume they're leaving via Acton?

I wasn't a huge fan of the D stock but I have grown fond of them over the years! I will be sad to see them go- not least because there will now be identical trains (ignoring S7/S8 differences) running on 4 lines. Makes me wonder what the discussions will be about in the future on sites like these.

D stock now seem like the worst of both worlds.
They're not 'semi-vintage' in the way that C stock seemed to be but at the same time they're a bit 'tired'.
On the other hand, they do the job.

Blimey, whilst I only did 11 years on the combine I started out on CO/CP, R stock and C69/77, then along came the future with the new D Stock, now C stocks gone D's have been through a refurbishment and are now on the way out I'm really feeling old, the S stock is the price of progress but I still cant take to them yet and I do miss transverse seating still enjoy looking out of the windows in open sections at least the S8's still retain some.

This thread was originally started by FISH7373... who asked: I initially pointed him in the direction of the S stock delivery introduction - discussion thread where discussions regarding the first D stock withdrawal had already started. However upon reflection this might be a better place to discuss the coming withdrawals, so I've unlocked it and have moved across what I believe to be the most appropriate posts for this thread Regards ChrisW

I now have to increase the search for the 8 remaining motor cars, even though I may have proof that I have seen every unit. While temperatures have been against me, I might be free on Tuesday afternoon if I pack lightly so that I do not carry much after class.

7510/7511 & 7058 now being separated in museum sidings I saw either 7510 or 7511 on the back of an Alley's heavy haul lorry heading up the North Circular at Ealing Common last night.

If legally possible, may I kindly enquire as to which units are next for withdrawal, so that I can priortise those over others, where necessary.
Thank you in advance,

I dunno whether 7082/7065 have been formally withdrawn yet, but that is all that's known at the moment. Given that the S stock introduction to the District line is as per the list below, that's a possible guide as to the pace of D stock withdrawals Train 1......19/1/15 Train 2......19/1/15 Train 3......26/1/15 Train 4......2/2/15 Train 5......2/2/15 Train 6......9/3/15 Train 7......16/3/15 Train 8......16/3/15 Train 9......23/3/15 Train 10.....30/3/15 Train 11.....30/3/15 Train 12.....6/4/15

As someone who used them ec=very working day, I always thought the original D78s were the worst stock on LU - stifling, garish, uncomfortable... The so-called "breath of air" quarter lights made little difference, as the quadrant stops were solid metal, allowing no crossflow of air. Then they refurbed them and made a 100% improvement IMO. Sad to see them go, though; latterly they were excellent.

Doesn't seem right seeing them go for scrap. They look new still, 30 years has gone far too quickly.
EDIT: 7058 in happier times.

At least it will have some life ahead of it, either as a RAT or the D train prototype. Does anyone know what it's fate is - I am assuming it is the latter?

Do we know their destination. Is it a scrapyard or storage location for further possible use?
