At the moment, all bar the few destined for internal RAT use have been purchased by Vivarail for use in the D-Train idea. A number of the cars are surplus to requirements and will be sent for scrap, but at the moment, all of the DMs, and a number of the trailers are being stored/converted

Article about the "Class 278" project in RAIL today, illustrated with a picture which is captioned as a D with a C side by side - at Edgware Road! (They are both C's)

I suppose RAIL has got it's reputation for a reason, reporting on these class 278s, which i've never heard of. Perhaps some other company has decided to copy vivarail and has bought the last couple remaining C stock for conversion

(They are both C's) Even on the Vivarail website the CGI pictures are of a converted/rebuilt D78 in the guise of a class 230... no 001 It did strike me that neither of the two C stock trains were of a D78 unit Type class 278 into Google and you currently get lots of links/images to Soviet submarines... that's not to say that this isn't the class they have been awarded should they come to fruition

(2xx as they are diesel-electric, 78 for obvious reasons)

As the withdrawal of D Stock has commenced, does anyone know if there will be a farewell tour for the stock in a similar manner to that for the withdrawn C stock ? - I hope this is the right place to ask this particular question

You are in the right place, but any talk/planning of any Railtour will be a long, long way off... especially as the D stock will still be operating this time next year.
I'm pretty sure the D stock has gone off piste before, ignoring Dave's invasion of the Piccadilly

The D stock has been into the Chilterns before but as Chris says it's a way off possibly two years away!

There is an item on the BBC news website about MP's complaining about cascading older stock for use outside London and the South-East.

Having read an interview with Adrian Shooter and seen more pictures today you will be hard pressed to tell the conversions are not new trains.
They are being retired very early from London having been seriously upgraded less than 10 years ago.

I know it's a shame for people in the North, and having lived up North through my teenage years, I can empathise, but reality check; that's life.
If you can't afford new for both, you do the best with what you have. It's like hand-me-down clothes with Kids. You don't buy new for the little'uns and then get some fabric and try and stitch together some rubbish for the bigger ones. You clean up the original, hand it down where it's better suited, and get something more suitable for the bigger ones! It's all about fit-for-purpose!
I was once told the majority of 'new' busses we got in Tyne & Wear, were what the folk of Manchester had deemed scrap-worthy only! Such is life...

I'd much rather the D stock be recycled as in reused, as opposed to simply scrapped...
Just riding them shouts out that they have a few good years left as they are... as opposed to the A or C stocks, which were, if we're honest, a bit tired in comparison.
I can respect the POV of others with regards to receiving what they may view as cast-offs, but compared to the 315s that were themselves cast offs, replacing previous cast off 310/312s on metro services out of Liverpool St... and which I have to endure on a daily basis... I know what I prefer.
IMO there is a metro-style use niche for them... however converting them to diesel.... that I'm not so sure, but I'm happy to be proved wrong !!!

Am I the only one who finds it disappointing that only 1 motor car is to be retained at the museum?

Blimey, whilst I only did 11 years on the combine I started out on CO/CP, R stock and C69/77, then along came the future with the new D Stock, now C stocks gone D's have been through a refurbishment and are now on the way out I'm really feeling old, the S stock is the price of progress but I still cant take to them yet and I do miss transverse seating still enjoy looking out of the windows in open sections at least the S8's still retain some. Wow.. 30 years... where has it gone? It seems like only a couple of years ago as a shiny new Station Gaurd that I was so disappointed to see WHU scratched in the cabs of these nearly new units along with that looke d like tooth picks.. I couldn't understand the pointless vandalism, especially as the train telephone was so good the crew could spend the trip doing crosswords and stuff That was back in the good old days before they painted the doors and lower sides.

The number of cars scrapped may be in the minority if Vivarail gets their way.
