Thought some members might be interested in this coming event -
Over the three days of the Spring Bank Holiday weekend from Saturday 24 to Monday 26 May, the East London Line will be closed for London Overground Capacity Improvement Programme (LOCIP) and Crossrail works on the line. We are therefore planning to open the Thames Tunnel to members of the public so they can walk through it. They will be charged to do this and the proceeds will be shared between the Railway Children’s charity and the Brunel Museum at Rotherhithe.
The Tunnel walks will be between 10:30 to 19:30 on the Saturday and 09:30 to 18:30 on the Sunday and Monday.
I've no idea of the cost of tickets although I'm sure they won't be too expensive.

Is there any link for this event? Not that I've seen. The information's only just been posted on the LU Intranet, so I'm sure it'll be advertised to the public fairly soon.

Good to see it going ahead. I presume that it will be organised through the Brunel Museum/Transport Museum as last time. Amusingly, I was told about it some months ago, and told to keep quiet. So there went my blog story exclusive

I wonder if its worth putting my name down to steward this. If not I will have to go do the walk, it sounds fun.

I'm in France at the moment but I'm sure the photos are on Flickr somewhere, I'll post a link if I find them. I remember having to wear sturdy footwear and gloves to protect against Weils's disease that comes from rats' urine. Niiiiice.

I wonder if its worth putting my name down to steward this. If not I will have to go do the walk, it sounds fun. Call for stewards went out from the museum on 8th April. The museum may still need people for this event, but previous history has seen steward spaces for these go fairly quickly, so be prepared for disappointment! As you say, "If not, (you) will have to go do the walk....."

Probably a stupid question but I assume the electricity in the rails is switched off on the walk

Probably a stupid question but I assume the electricity in the rails is switched off on the walk After the Great Tunnel Disaster of 2010 when 80 people were fried alive down there, then probably yes, they will turn the power off. Took weeks to wash the bodies off the walls last time.

I bought two tickets perfectly fine.
Absolutely can't wait, the East London Line is so historic.

I got my ticket no problem at 10:02. BUT, be quick, several time slots are already sold out.

One quick question. Do you only enter from the Rotherhithe side or can you enter from either?

I would imagine the tour may start at one end and finish at the other. The next tour would start at the place the other finished and go to where the first started maybe?
So far I only know of the time and date I am on shift, but I should know more by the end of the week.

Last time the tours started at the Rotherhithe end, went out through one side of the tunnel to Wapping and then back to Rotherhithe through the other. This allowed tours to leave every 10min without running into each other.
