Lovely to be on the A stock and 38 stock again! Although it made me sad that the A stock is no longer in service. I just wondered, why did they not use carriages from the final rail tour? I ask as they were all super clean, polished floors and most graffiti removed, whereas yesterday's train felt like it was fresh from normal service! (which I assume it was).

5110-5234 received a lot of work on the mechanicals to ensure they remain reliable for as long as possible while in RAT use. The units that formed the end of service railtour didn't get any of that, but were spruced up cosmetically for the occasion.

I can't help but wonder about the practicality of "defurbishing" a unit for real heritage. Sand off the paint - relatively simple, Relay the floor - again fairly simple, Change the moquette - costly but doable - Covering up the car end windows - difficult but do-able. I think that having a real heritage A stock might be nice, but probably not justifiable

Since it is in reasonable condition I think it would be a shame to remove its history by 'restoring'it too soon. I sometimes think things can be spoiled by returning them to original condition and cleaning them up too much. Ex-service condition is interesting in its own right. But clearly some sort of compromise is essential if a unit is to be kept in working order.

Getting rid of the side extensions where "curtains" used to hang to stop people jumping between the cars would be a good idea on a preserved unit. See photo here - they look uglier in real life than in the photo.
