After all the build-up, it's just been announced that London will indeed host the Olympics in 2012!
Hopefully all of the promised infrastructure improvements to LUL and other improvements in the east-end will all actually happen!

Congratulation London.
As LU people, what difference will this make to the system? What needs changing / improving? Is it feasable before 2012 (comments about the late referbs taken as read!)?
Just wondering what the 'insiders' might think about this!

I'm just glad the French didn't get it! With only 4 votes in it, I think the Fench Presidents sarky comments on our food swung it! Which line(s) currently serve the destination?

Well, as I understand things, the main area is going to be in Stratford, east London. This area is currently served by the central line and Jubilee line, as well as NR and DLR. TfL (Ken Livingstone) has promised all sorts of extensions and upgrades to all lines though, so we await with baited breath to see what happens next! Very exciting times ahead methinks!

Perhaps now we will give the World something much more bigger other than Foot & Mouth and rubbish Food!!! ;D ;D ;D (Who does Jacques Chirac think he is!? I feel after what he said about the British, he doesn't deserve the Olympics in his Country) news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/wales/4652533.stm

What a lot of people don't realize is, many of us don't actually want the Olympics here. London Council Tax payers will be paying for this for years to come, and those of us living in East London and Essex will be living with building and roadworks for the next 7 years, driving about is going to be a nightmare.

It'll only be the last year or two that will be bad. The next five will have cronies of Blair etc on quangos deciding the best way to do things, then paying more private companies to do feasability studies, then more people to do planning etc... Cynical? Me? As if...

Strange they call it an upgrade - as we were not permitted to use that phrase as nothing was being upgraded. The term 'enhancement' is the preferred one in our department.

I'm for and against it! As an Englishman, i'm proud we got one over the French! ;D ;D As an Essex man, I agree with Jim, things like traffic and housing costs, etc - will be a nightmare. As for LUL, I think the 'lets wait and see' policy might be the best bet! ;D ;D ;D At least I might get a transfer to Upminster depot by then!! ;D

Just wondering what the 'insiders' might think about this! The main lines affected are: District line - Tennis at Wimbledon (Southfields stn) Marathon (various central London stn's) Beach Volleyball at Horsegaurds parade (Embankment stn) Olympic village and stadium at Stratford (one stop from West Ham stn) Piccadilly lineHeathrow Airport! Bakerloo lineBaseball in Regents Park (Regents Park stn) Marathon (various central London stn's) Central lineOlympic village and stadium at Stratford (Stratford stn) Jubilee lineArchery at Lord's (St John's Wood stn) Shooting and Equestrian at Greenwich - Gymnastics at the Dome (North Greenwich stn) Olympic village and stadium at Stratford (Stratford stn) All other linesMarathon (various central London stn's) Will Metromess and Tubefines sorry, Metronet and Tubelines deliver? Will LUL cope? Like I said previously, we'll have to wait and see!!

I understood that the domestic services on CTRL are meant to be the backbone of the transportation to the Stratford site from Central London, aided by the possible DLR extension along the NLL tracks. Sadly the direct rail links from Heathrow are due around 2013 [probably later]...
I'm very excited, having worked at Manchester in 2002. With my parent's living on the Essex side of Stratford on the Central, I can see it all being very convenient for a job on 2012. (Must update my CV... ;-))

AIUI All CTRL domestics will be subject to enhanced fares to pay for the *amned thing due to the premium service offered. I can see LOTS of punters going for that

Actually, if british chippies could learn how to parboil the chips first, in lower-temperature oil, and then fry them over high heat, so that the chips are crispy instead of mushy, fish and chips wouldn't be bad at all. As it is, I personally like the fish, but usually pass on the chips.

Do me a favour, there's nothing to beat fish and chips cooked in beef dripping, the proper way!! Yup, potatoes fried in lard does get that extra artery-clogging goodness. ;D Some frites shops in France and Belgium actually still use rendered horse fat, which for some reason gives the frites an absolutely unreal fluffy crispiness. Oh, and a bowl of steamed mussels with that, please. And a trappiste beer wouldn't go amiss either.

The reas0on chips in chippes are soggy is because they are saturated with water by being left to soak overnight. This increase's bulk but also ensures the chips don't FRY. They boil from the water content within and just the skin goes a slight shade of ?

I've noticed just recently topics have become less and less rail associated. They all started in good faith, (terror on the underground, olymplics and the underground) but they seem to have taken a different path. I'll admit I am also to blame, I just hope DD doesn't think we're taking liberties!

Yup, potatoes fried in lard does get that extra artery-clogging goodness. ;D Nope not lard, beef dripping. It makes a serious difference and if properly done shouldn't penetrate the potato leaving the outside firm and crisp and the inside light and fluffy. Dammit, they're nearly a health food. ;D

AIUI this forum is about developing good cultural links with people from around the world using railways as a subject by which we introduce ourselves. Well, that's my excuse anyway. ;D
