Someone has claimed on another rail forum that " 30 S8s have potential cracks in bogies and may have to be sent back to Bombardier" Is there any truth in this?

He stated right afterwards "Source two Met Drivers", so it's clearly just a rumour.. whether or not it is accurate will be interesting to find out

It wouldn't surprise me! The Met is a tough line with higher speeds. The A stock also had cracking bogies in the early 60s too!

It has been mentioned in this Forum before that 30 S8s need to return to Derby.
Although if bogie related, why not change the bogies at Neasden?

Good point. I'm not sure if Neasden has the required equipment in place or ready yet? Perhaps it is too serious for the depot to do. Maybe it is linked to the warranty? Who knows!

I thought the problem with the A stock came later on hence the speed reduction in the 90s/2000s? Maybe it is an LT/LU thing because I don't think the 115s suffered from it and the 165s don't as well.

Ah so that's why they need to go back. Not great durability is it.

Is this confirmed officially now or still only a rumour?

Wiring looms not to LU spec, nothing to do with bogies AFAIK.

I'd be very surprised if there was a widespread problem with cracked bogies on such new trains. The wiring issue sounds more plausible.

Sounds like they are victims of being rushed out for the Olympics to me.

There is a lot of truth to this story and I have been told that some interesting developments may ensue. However keeping on the A stocks is not one of them.

another feather in the A stocks cap.with the deliveries being stopped at the beginning of the year and now further problems',the costs are beginning to mount.

I was told today that trains are going back to Derby for gearbox changes. To cover for the removals three S7s will be made up to S7+1 and will work on the Met for a while. One S7+1 was on the test track at Derby today (Train 70)

so does this mean that the met will be using trains that have no traverse seating at all?! that must be a first.

Are these spare S7 cars not in service yet? so where would the extra carriage come from? They will be new cars inserted into S7s at Derby into trains yet to be delivered and then removed much later when returned to seven cars after the S8 gearbox refitting has been completed.

I know where they can find three or four ready marshalled eight car trains that are in London already, won't need PUBLIC money spent on transfer trips, and have a transverse seating layout that the effected commuters might actually prefer... If anyones interested I could point at them for half the price of whatever the scheme they're planning to do costs. How to I get legal savvy on EU project tendering processes?

Will S7s also need their gearboxes refitted? No, the problem relates to early deliveries.

so where would the extra carriage come from? They are taking them from other S7 trains and adjusting the production sequence.

Hi all, Just to shed some light onto this. I was at the Derby Bombardier Family Day last weekend where I spoke to one of the people working on the S Stocks who clarified that the current S7s which are awaiting delivery will gain an extra carriage for about two months whilst they fix the Bogie issues. Those S7s with extra carriages will then have the train shortened at a London Underground depot (Neasden I would imagine) and the the carriage that had been added in will go back and all these extra carriages will then make one S7. Currently, there are 4 S7s which are pretty much ready for delivery, they are now being lengthened but the first S8 has already made it's way back to Derby and is priority. There was also talk about those S7s that have gained a carriage may just stay with the Met and then the S8s will lose a carriage and join the Circle/H&C/District instead of a lot more faffing, that still is being worked out if they can but that is only a possible. Apparently there is an issue with doing that due to some of the wiring and technical side of things but they are looking into it as it will be easier in the long term. Cheers Jason
