Sorry, I promise this is my last topic for a while, I seem to ask a lot of questions.
So, District, Picc and whoever. Tunnels, you drive through them everyday, we all hate them.
After watching films such as 'Raw 'Meat' and 'Creep' I seem to be a bit un-nerved about going into the main Tube tunnels of London, even on my simulator!
So then drivers, how (if possible) do I overcome my fear of the long tunnels? is there anything you think of to reassure yourself?
Is there anyway I can forget about the little men in the tunnels popping out and shouting 'MINADORS!'
I've asked Q8 in a private topic and hopefully he can answer.

Firstly, don't make this the last topic for a while! We don't mind answering questions! That's what makes the forum so interesting. I've learned a lot from it since it started, as I'm sure the rest of us have!
Anyway, regarding tunnels, you have to remember that the films you mention are just fiction! There are many people who have claimed to have saw ghosts down there, probably due to the amount of one-unders etc over the years, but it's really nothing to worry about!
Don't let your imagination get the better of you!

Thanks Alan, I don't know why but I get very easily scared these days (probably my friend forcing me to listen to war of the worlds when I was 4 years old, never slept a full night for another 1 year) I try to take my mind of it but like I said, on my simulator it just gives me the creeps driving through there... Another film that put me off tunnels was Volcano where the car literally melts with everyone inside it.. Not good if I want to be a driver on the LUL now is it?

I'll give you atip DS and that is DON't watch all that rubbish as it is doing to you exactly what the makers intended and that is to drive you cuckoo. Just because your mates watch all that tripe doesn't mean that you should. Oh and even if they have a go at the wakky baccy then that too you leave well out and would ruin your chances of a job with LUL.. That is a VERY dangerous road to go down. Ok they may call you a wuss but take no notice of that. Watch an action film or an adventure or even a comedy and have a bloody good laugh but leave this horror muck well alone until you are at least 20.
As for ghoulies down the pipe, well as I said in the PM there is nothing at all down there to be sh*tty about. Except maybe "Little Hitler" managers.
So young fella "Have no fear, friends are near"

Thank you Q8. I suppose nothing could live down there except rats and such. I stopped on the wacky baccy two days ago and don't plan on going back to it.
As for horror films I'm not going to watch anymore and start worrying about my future and not monsters.
Just a quick question.. Is there a disused station between London Bridge and Borough? I think I saw one on my simulator..

Is there a disused station between London Bridge and Borough? I think I saw one on my simulator.. The only thing I can think of is an abandoned branch to the King William Street (forks just north of Borough).

Just a quick question.. Is there a disused station between London Bridge and Borough? I think I saw one on my simulator.. There is the old City & South London Tunnels to King William Street at Borough. On Work Experience I went down them with a group of LUL Management and there was totally NOTHING of the 'monster' nature (except me ;D) down the tunnels, we didn't even come into contact with any Rats either! I must admit, I've never experienced 'the dark' as much as I had down in the tunnels! Take a look at these Photo's www.pendar.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Tube/KingWilliamStreet.html - These were taken with flash, but in reality if you had no torch or any other source of light, you couldn't see ANYTHING at all! Not even if you put your hand in front of your face!

Thanks for those Christopher, I don't think I'd of had the bottle to do that. I'm not very good friends with the dark.
Interesting photo's however

I'm not very good friends with the dark. Neither am I, I only went down into the tunnels because I knew I was going to be with people around me who knew their way around the tunnels. If I was passed to go down in the tunnels on my own, I would do it, but only if I knew my way around them, the thought of going down into tunnels you're not associated with and not being able to find the exit sends a shiver down me. I guess the thing that frightens me is my mind playing tricks on me, I know there's nothing there but my mind keeps on making me think there is - that's what scares me I guess. I'm okay outside in open air in the dark because I know people will be close and I can see around me. Even at night time when my parents are out and my house is empty I do sometimes get the feeling something or someone is inside and I do tend to freak out to that feeling (what I normally do is just stand stone cold until I gain confidence to move and go and see if there is anything or just carry on with what I was doing confident nothings there) The Human Mind is a strange thing...

I dont have a problem with going down the pipe personally, and i think the best way to get used to it is to go down there more often. However when i had to walk out of Liverpool Street Sidings with my I/O and a DSM, i was sh1tting a brick so to speak! Probably as there was quite a few rails about!

Same thing with E&C sidings, there's no official walkway, the juice is on (funnily enough thats something you become accustomed to and don't worry about), it's dark, the train in the n/b plat can still move off even though you've operated the keyswitch (if the driver accidentally put his key in reverse you've had it!), rumour is it's haunted down there, some drivers have reported trains rolling with all the keys out down there, and i have personally heard footsteps echoing down there first thing when the station is still closed... but you get used to it! ;D wasn't trying to frighten anyone with my earlier post, just thought i'd elaborate a bit.

Those feetsteps you heard? I assume it was after traffic? Only a group us down there one night playing cards on a stabled train with the doors open (SB Siding) also heard footsteps when we investigated we found them to be coming from the fan shaft down there. The fan was off at the time. Where the other end of it is I don't know but that explains one phenomenon
As for trains rolling with no keys in, well they will on that gradient unless the rail anchor is in place. Even with handbrakes on. I have gone down there in the morning to prepare a train and the last driver had not put the rail anchor on the night before and it was sitting in the sand drag at the far end!

I stopped on the wacky baccy two days ago and don't plan on going back to it. As for horror films I'm not going to watch anymore and start worrying about my future and not monsters. So your new alias will be Ascending Happily... ;D ;D I feel sorry for all those uneasy about the dark. Youngsters these days just do not get the chance to experience total darkness in safety (apart from the occasional science lab at school). When I was a youngster we went on a farm holiday in the middle of nowhere and at night it was pitch black- couldn't even see hand in front of face, but it was safe. There is no doubt watching horror movies does not help but it is much worse if you do so at home: the reason is that if you watch in a cinema you leave the horror behind when you exit- it then becomes just fiction. Watching at home means you associate the horror with your house- much more damaging according to the experts. Sorry this is a long post but I too am just trying to reassure the wary- and practice (in a safe environment) getting used to the dark will certainly help

What's a rail anchor please? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Well it's bit hard to describe but I'll try. Picture in your mind a big metal clothes peg about 2 ft long with a chain attached to the top. The chain attaches to a loop on the train chassis. The clothes peg is placed around the head of the running rail and a collar on the body of the peg is forced down so that it grips the rail tightly. If the train starts to roll away the cahin tightens and the peg gripping the rail stops it moving and more that few inches. I can't find a picture but a very rough drawing of the thing looks like this. i7.photobucket.com/albums/y279/Q8stock/File0006.jpg

I'm not very good friends with the dark. I wasn't very good with the dark for a long time DS, working nights is a good cure for it! As for the wacky baccy, I used to smoke it when I was a lot younger and gave up a few years ago now, and have felt a lot better ever since. It does make a difference.

Back to E&C sidings, we don't have rail anchors on the 72's, according to what it says on the tin, shutting down fully will give a full Westinghouse application which will hold the train for sufficient time until the SAPB's kick in. Maybe the drivers concerned drivers didnt shut down properly, i dont know?
As for the footsteps, it was before traffic, and you are right there are a number of ladders and doorways heading out of the sidings, rumour has it one will take you up to the large silver building in Elephant roundabout which is an LT power station. These are also the means of access for the annual Christmas day pilgrimage of the graffiti artists who get into the sidings and work their way up the line, leaving their mark on everything in their way. The other year they also got into London Rd depot and surprised a few dead early drivers on Boxing day!!! Every train was covered, as were those stabled at E&C and the platforms at Lambeth. You'd think people would have better things to do on christmas, or at least LU could employ a security guard seeing as it happens without fail every year... Anyway, totally off the point again. Oh well...

Thanks to Bob (Q8) I took his advice and sat in the dark for 15 minutes on my own in the middle of the night (well that's a lie, i only reached ten before my mind started playing tricks on me and I had to turn the light on) but I'm still kind of scared, I probably associate darkness with burglery and aliens and bogey men.
You may laugh but I'm sure you have fears of something SOCK PUPPETS *several members scream*
but yeah I think when I meet up with Bob and take a trip on the Metro it might reassure me a little that the tunnels are really safe.
I also think that me reading up on the London Underground history and such never helped the situation..what with reading all the facts about tunnels stopping next to plague victims and people dying while working on it.

I usually tend to get my mind playing tricks on me when I go to Bed straight after watching something about out-of-this-world creatures, but I'm normally fine the next night, it just takes a bit of time for my mind to settle down. (and for me to come to my senses that there is NOTHING THERE ;D) As for your fear of Sock Puppets - I don't find anything funny about it, everybody has different fears and teasing somebody about them only makes them lose their confidence and the fear eats away at them more. I have fears of Bees and Wasps, I don't mind looking at them, it's just when they buzz over to you and start attacking you or following you that does me in. I wouldn't mind meeting up if that's okay with you, I guess the more of us there are - the more support you have.

Young Luke is talking to his parents who will also come for a little trot around the Metro and any other thing the young fella decides he would like. We will obviously stop for eats and suchlike. The arrangements are up in the air at the moment as Luke has got to set a date and time after talking with his Mam and Dad. The one day I CANNOT make is. Saturday August 6th. Any other day is fine. Me and Luke will keep you posted.
