Coming back from a trip to central London yesterday I noticed that the two trains I used both had new line diagrams showing the new distinction between "level access to platform" and "level access to train".
Both of the trains were A-stock! What a waste of money to change the diagrams on trains that may be withdrawn within months.

Perhaps the previous diagrams were damaged or stolen (yes I've seen it done) and there was no other option.

It doesn't matter if the stock only has a matter of months left to run, up-to-date customer information is what is important here. I can see what you're saying about the perceived waste of time and money, but whilst still in service all trains - old and new - are treated the same when it comes to this sort of thing. Not all of our customer know which stock is which, and therefore need all information to be standard across the board.

What a waste of money to change the diagrams on trains that may be withdrawn within months. every s stock map has to be changed EVERY time the smallest detail is changed. close to 200 maps per train, even worse than a A stock. map overkill.

I'd volunteer to change them on overtime rates

I'd volunteer to change them if I get to keep a copy myself - or two - plus some food - and drink - and a cab ride... too much?

Was it a prototype trial of the new line map format by any means?

I understand that the central london map on every carriage on the whole tube network will have to be replaced once the Northern Line connection at Tottenham Court Road is opened later this year?

All of our maps are updated regularly - be it with the use of stickers or full re-issues. As I hinted at earlier, the issue here is not about how long a map will last, but about conveying up-to-date and accurate information to our customers. It would be negligent of us to simply leave old/incorrect information on display on purpose.
I'm sure every supermarket in the land changes its huge "sale" posters on a weekly basis without much comment from anyone.

Would digitalised maps not solve this problem?

I don't think it is considered a "problem." The maps have worked sufficiently for how many years? It's only during the current upgrade project that we'll see an increase in changes to the maps. There will come a time where the network may reach a point where nothing more can be done, and the maps will no longer need changing.
Digitised maps would of course be a wonderful advance in customer information, and I'm sure each and every customer will appreciate the huge hike in fares to pay for such an upgrade - and of course the subsequent technical support for what will no doubt be numerous upgrades and revisions to the software. And how much more hard-wearing are digital displays compared to a simple sticker?

Dont be silly, the advertising that they will be displaying every 30 seconds will cover the costs!

Dont be silly, the advertising that they will be displaying every 30 seconds will cover the costs! Just imagine scrolling adverts to look at instead of re-reading the same Orange phone advert for about 30 minutes!

And the first train which is cancelled, because the adverts/maps don't work...
And if you think that idea is also silly, you're not sitting where I sit.

This discussion got me wondering what was the longest period that any in car map would have remained valid. (Obviously the more information, such as disabled access, or stopping patterns on the Met) that is provided, the more often changes are needed).
I would have thought the W&C in-car maps would have needed no changes between 1946 (Circle Line gets its new colour) and 1994 (W&C itself gets its new colour). The ELL would also have seen little change from electrification in 1913 to turning orange in the 1980s. What would be the longest period of stablity for the longer lines?

W&C would have had a DLR interchange added at Bank in '91.
Ignoring zones or tinkering to show fast lines, the Met was pretty stable between when Moor Park became Met only and Chesham got an all day through service...
Actually, when did it regain an all day service through to the city... it was all around the same time as the H&C blushed and BR stopped calling at Moor Park?

Pretty much unchanged since 1999. (JLE opening) Overground Most of the Northern End has interchange with it. What was that, '07? Unchanged since then, then.

The East London Line didn't have its own map. On the A60/62 stock it was at the end of all the mainline maps. On the CO/CP stock it had the Hammersmith and City, Circle and East London Lines, with bits of the District one.

*Ahem* That's a very recent map. The one(s) which Metman refers to were when the ELL was simply an "extension" of the Met, and was not in any way "orange." Shoreditch was a "limited service" and not a "bus service." We're talking block capitals, squared edges, and none of this lower-case smoothed edges (and orange colour) stuff. EDIT: This link won't last forever, but here is one such example for sale (wish I had one, give the price they're charging ) - and Shoreditch is actually very much still part of the regular service!

Nice link! Its just a pleasure to look at that as a design. Just about remember similar ones on the pre-refurb A stock when the newer maps had pealed off.
Interesting to note Baker Street has interchange with 'Hammersmith & City' in Met colour; was this always shown as such?

As far as I know (and can recall from my early days on the job) yes, until it changed to a pink background.

I don't remember it reading H&C but perhaps at Baker Street it said 'Hammersmith' and at Liverpool Street 'Whitechapel'
Was a long time ago.
I remember the ELL with A stock *sigh*

Pity it's a replica map and not the real thing so I wouldn't trust all the details on it as being 100% correct. @ Metcontrol, I think the same cOmpany sell this map unframed for £10 or £15.
