I don't post here much but read on pretty much a daily basis and this has come as a bit of a shock. I never had the pleasure to meet Dave but it is clear that he was well liked by pretty much everyone who did.
My condolences go to Dave's friends and family at this time. I'm sure he will always be remembered by a great many people.

I never had the opportunity to meet Dave, but it's thanks to both his main ste and this forum that I came to realise that a career in LU is difficult to achieve, yes, but not impossible.

Very sad news indeed. Like many others on this forum I didn't know Dave beyond his postings having more or less stumbled into the group by chance. However, the knowledge and insight into London Underground I've gained since joining has been fantastic and I'd like to offer my condolences to Dave's family and salute him for the fantasic resource he gave us . RIP. Hugh.

My condolences to Dave's family and many friends. I met Dave when the first District line D78 refurbished train was being tested. He introduced me to the forum and there was a healthy few threads about that refurb! The forum is read far and wide, Focon, the Danish suppliers of customer information systems, I know were followers at that time!

I also don't post often, but read a few times a week. As a passenger, this is an invaluable forum to find out just how the Tube and railways in London really work, and I've been enlightened and put straight countless times by what I've read here. Reading through the tributes, it's clear how Dave inspired people through this forum to get work on the Tube or simply to find out more about something that's often taken for granted.
My condolences to his family and friends. I'll raise a glass to Dave, and to all of you who helped him create and maintain this fine legacy.

This has all come as rather a shock – for I had no idea that Dave was so ill. My heartfelt sympathies and condolences to his family and, what must be, a very large circle of friends. Dave and I first corresponded way back in 2004 – long before the Proboards host – when Dave was driving the original District Dave web site. I was living in the States at the time. It doesn’t seem so long ago – so sad. God’s speed and thank-you – you are missed. (Ian) Hutch

I haven't logged in here for a while, but do pop on every now and again as a guest...
Although I never met Dave, it seemed to me from the posts about the forum meets and such that he was a top bloke.
He'll be missed for sure. Joe

I am saddened to hear of Dave's death. In creating this group Dave facilitated the bringing together of an informed and generous bunch of contributors. I do hope that Dave's family can take some comfort from the fact that he has the thanks, respect and gratitude of so many people. They will miss him but they are not alone so will we. Thanks Dave.

So sorry to hear of the untimely passing of District Dave – as has already been said, this is incredibly sad news and a total shock to me as I had no idea he was even ill.
I had the privilege of meeting Dave for the last unrefurbished D Stock working. That this was even a commemorative and public event was, I have no doubt due to Dave’s indefatigable ability to do ‘more than just the job’ and to enthuse colleagues and management alike so that everyone involved was galvanised into going the extra mile in terms of preparation which enabled a great night to happen. From the greetings he received on entering the train at Earls Court right through to the last rites at Ealing Common, the esteem in which Dave was held by colleagues and forum members alike was clear to see. What remains with me was how Dave and the other staff on duty that night went out of their way to share the evening with all present. Dave exhibited such a charming and patient manner with everyone and it was a real pleasure to be able to share a conversation with him.
As a visually impaired person, who would have dearly liked to have been a career railwayman and who has been a frustrated enthusiast ever since, I am deeply grateful to Dave for having the vision to set up the present forum, thereby enabling the means for many to share so unselfishly the inside view of the job and for those of us on the outside to gain just a little more insight into the complexities involved.
At least the Richmod – Upminster section of the splendid ‘East London & District’ DVD is a permanent and fitting record and reminder of Dave’s driving prowess, and the passion he clearly had for the job.
My sincere condolences to Dave’s wife and family at this time.

I don't check the forum for a few days and come back to this. Had a sinking feeling when I saw Oracle post "the late, great, District Dave" on another forum and thought "eh?". Wow. There's not much I can think of saying that hasn't been said already. I knew Dave was ill but didn't realise how serious it was.
Having been around on this and the previous forum, I've been lucky enough to go to a number of meets over the years and share a few drinks. He was an absolute gent and I remember his obvious passion for the job when discussing it with other forum members in various pubs! I always looked out for him on the front of Ds and Cs when I was out and about, and we had previously discussed various web projects he wanted to get started on which I was looking forward to. I was absolutely looking forward to seeing him again at the next meet.
Dave was an absolutely solid good guy and I'm sure we will all miss him. My wholeheated condolences to his family, who I hope are bearing up as well as possible, and thanks Dave for starting an excellent website and forum! Have fun playing with the big railway in the sky.

RIP Dave. We only met once on that last silver D Stock run in to Ealing Common but the decency identified by all was reflected in that evening.

District Dave's last post in January sums the man up...
"As with he, I'm no expert on these more historical matters and I have to say it's not something I've heard of previously - even anecdotaly.
But that doesn't mean to say I'm right!. There are bound to be others who know more than I! So please do ask challenging questions - I'm sure someone wil provide informed answers. "
Humble, friendly, willing to help and a keen sense of community. Such a sad loss.

My condolences to Daves family. I don't often post, but I look at this fabulous site many times a day. Being an ex driver its given me one way of keeping in touch with "the job", a job I worked on for many years and at times still miss. So thanks Dave for all your hard work in making this such a interesting site. A very sad day.

A much appeciated website and forum , and clearly a much respected railwayman. Obviosly put more than the effort into the job and the wider community. A great legacy
Much respect - and condolences to family and friends and workmates - I hope there is a railway messroom up there , and Dave is holding forth - giving advice and encouragement - whilst doing a worthwhile job with enjoyment.

Just to say I have no connection with the modern LT (!) but I have thoroughly enjoyed membership of this forum, having lived in the East End for a good while in the late '50s. A cracking site for anything to do with LUL or London Overground. Its continuing existence is hopefully seen as a suitable memorial. Thanks, Dave. RIP.

Not being on this forum too much these days due to living 15,000km away from London, I was upset to read this news.
My condolences go out to District Dave's family. A big thanks to DD for setting up his own website, and this forum. I'm sure that both websites have helped drive many a persons interest in London Underground.

Haven't been on the forum for a while - and wasn't sure what the latest sticky was at the top - very saddened to see the "news". I never met Dave myself, but I also wish his family all the best in coming to terms with their loss. It's clear from the other messages on here that he had a very positive influence on all those who met him. You just never know when your signal will light up, do you?

Several contacts at Focon in Denmark, suppliers of Passenger Information Systems including for several LUL fleets have asked me to post their condolences including one who has since changed jobs but sent the following;
"No less than three of my old colleagues have contacted me with the sad news, as they also have been struck by it - they had much fun and support from the information on District Dave's forum - and from Dave himself.
I used the forum when we were working on the CIS for D-Stock, to get a feeling of how the end-users of our systems saw the world and how our system worked for them. I didn't post much, as it might have caused difficulties within our contracts. I tried to post a few questions and provide some support if we could figure out if one of the drivers were doing something with the new system and it caused an error that he/she didn't understand!
I contacted Dave himself a couple of times and he was very helpful and happy to learn more about the system - and we met when I was in London for a conference, where we shared a pint or two and discussed the workings of the CIS, and how he and his colleagues felt about it. When I came back, I told my colleagues that I'd met a real british gentleman - one of those you only see in movies.
His kindness and supportive nature was fantastic and I am happy to have met such a person and been able to help him a little bit with his job and interest.
My condolences to his family for their loss, RIP.
Best Regards Christian"
