Can anyone tell me (or remind me, if I've missed/forgotten it) why 24444 and friends have had what appear to be new numbers stuck on judging by the look of them this morning? Were they wrapped up (Mexico/Russia?) somewhen? Yes was in the SSR Upgrade vinyl wrap, 23/03/2015-27/09/2015. When the vinyl was removed, the numbers came with it! Other wrapped S Stock show similar differences from standard number application, the recent ‘Russian’ train 21455/56 now has ‘New Johnston’ car numbers.

Talking of car numbers, I've noticed that on some S8s one unit has very faded numbers, while the complementary unit's numbers are in good condition. Since the units have been together since introduction, how can one unit's numbers wear so much more badly than the other's?

Graffiti and the graffiti gel they use to clean it off, strips everything off and no real urgency to replace them.

{Referring to S7s on the Met'} Isn't there only one? And even then it's an S7+1. Currently two, things should be happening with these upon their return to Derby soon. Things? Will they be returning as S7 or remaining as an S7+1. If the former what's happening to the extra car, or is there an S6 (S7-1) trundling about somewhere?

I would think that they'll have their seating changed to conventional S8 style.

Not definite but 21323/24 should be losing it’s extra M2D car (25384) this is likely to have its de-icing equipment removed and this car is likely to be stored. Train software will be reconfigured and the 7-car train will join the S7 fleet. 21327/28 will also possibly have de-icing equipment removed from extra M2D car (25386), the train will return to the Metropolitan.

25386 is also expected to be renumbered at this stage into sequence with the rest of the unit, and I've heard whisperings that the now spare de-icing gear will be equipped onto the additional S7 M2 cars to provide the correct number of de-icing trains.

But no changes to seating?

Surely the expense required to change the seating would be far greater than the benefits to the different seat arrangement, so what would be the point?

But no changes to seating? No. The cost would far outweigh the benefits, as it also requires alterations to equipment and other aspects.

To clarify my previous post, the train is expected to remain numbered as an S7, reflecting its lineage, but to have the additional cars renumbered in sequence rather than currently. Apologies for any confusion from my original wording (now edited).

Thank you, I hadn't realised it would entail equipment changes; thought they were a bit more standardised than that.
How many stored cars of S stock will there be in the end?

How many stored cars of S stock will there be in the end? From the initial order for 191 trains, (1395 cars) this was increased to 192 trains (1402 cars) plus two additional M2 cars (23384, 23386) = 1404 cars. Only one car (25384) should be stored.

Wasn’t the extra train for the MLX which is now cancelled so they will have another S8 spare

The extra train was an S7+1 not an S8 as the S8 production run had finished when it was ordered. My understanding is that there will not be a single unsused train, but that there will be one more spare train (which will be any train in the fleet, in rotation) not in service than planed (i.e. there will be 192 trains for a 180 (or whatever) train service, rather than the the 191 trains for a 180 train service as originally planned.

The extra train is, ? there could be fights over that question 21567/8 is a S7 so how can it be the extra train? I wouldn't want to referee the argument about which is the extra.

I wouldn't want to referee the argument about which is the extra. As said by Chris M S8 production had finished, only S7s were being built. Three S7+1 were already running on the Metropolitan so the decision was made to keep one of those running on the Met and cancel the original plan to transfer them all back to the Circle/District/H&C. Therefore the S7 fleet was -1 so the extra train 21567/68 was added to the order.

Is it possible we end up with an S7 +1 -1?

Arguably we already have two S7-1+1s! 😋

I witnessed a S stock today getting coupled up today to the class 20s ready to go up for ATO fitment. Amazing sound as the 20s throttle up.

Just a reminder to members that the guidance issued by the admin team in 2012 still applies to all S stock transfers. This guidance can be found HERE. The forum staff will have no hesitation in editing or removing any posts deemed unsuitable. Thanks.
