Looking good. I'll be hitting my layout Harrow hard over Xmas, just been to move a few bits in the parents garage!
Hopefully I can bring a few bits to the xmas meet this year....

As a lad, I was always fascinated by the Widened Lines, so it should come as no surprise that Aylesbury Junction has through workings to Moorgate which bring an N2 and quad-arts here on Saturday mornings. (Saturday morning was part of the normal working week then, when men did 44 hours, and I can remember my dad cycling to work Sat mornings). I’m still not ready to weather my Bachmann L89 so took this opportunity to get some more practice in. I had an old Mainline N2 of 30+ years so tried to weather here in a workaday state of the late 50’s. ie quite well worn but still getting a bit of a rub down with a cleaning rag in places where the cleaner can reach easily without spending overmuch time. 69531 heads off to town one Saturday morning in early summer. L92 has collected some loaded coal wagons which have been brought in by something from the Midland Region and will head off to Neasden as soon as the N2 clears the section. Our gricer normally takes his camera with him when cycling to work and one weekday morning in high summer caught 69531 again, this time shunting a van. With the impending arrival of the A stock, and the N2 working on borrowed time, our photographer caught this working one Saturday in high summer, again with 69531 and L92 on similar workings as previously.

Can't wait for the shiny A stock! If you use the Radley Models one make sure to remove the poorly sized headlights box which the trains didn't have pre OPO. I'm loving the photos.

Nice shots. Can't wait to see the A-stock on your layout.

Thanks for the comments - I fear I may have misled you by using caption writer's licence. In reality the arrival of A stock here is probably quite some way off.
a/ I don't even have any in the workshops yet! b/ I'm really unsure how to get the colour right for newly delivered aluminium stock. The EFE tubes aren't bad but could be better, and eg Metman has done great work with modern liveried A's, but 'freshly into service' A stock is really challenging me.

Somewhere on the thread regarding the last Acton meet there should be some pictures of my 35TS. I used Tamiya flat alluminium for it and I think it looks ok. I just need to redo the finish on the 1927 trailer and it'll be a complete three-car!
Love the pictures. I guess the quad-art is a Kirk kit. It really looks the part behind the N2. Nice job on the weathering too. The N2s were pretty much history by the time the A stock entered service. A great excuse to run F, CO/CP and T stock! Keep us posted.

I'm also trying to get a brand spanking new A60 for my layout 5002 was the plan, sad it's gone. There are aluminium sprays out there but its getting the colours right. Perhaps a good coat of matt varnish is the answer? The photos I've seen make the stock look quite white, but it's just getting that balance. The first 6 A60s actually have black roofs so I guess that is 5000, 5002, 5004, 5006, 5008 and 5010?

A boyhood favourite of mine was the ex GWR 61xx Large Prairies (or tanner one-ers as we knew them). The occasional 61xx turns up on parcels workings from Reading. 6134 is seen here on the evolving shed-cum-light maintenance area. More appropriate red cabside plates are on order to change the id to 6167 - needless to say the Hornby couplings will be retired in time. I've tried going for a more restrained weathering on this one, little realising it would take nearly as long as heavy weathering, as of course you need to do nearly as many passes to build it all up. This started life as Hornby 6134 in the livery you see here but the model out of the box was totally clean.

Looking good! As my layout 'Harrow-on-the-Hill' can feature trains from the late 30s to early 60s I bought an LNER J39. I need to weather this as the colour is as flat black as you can get. I'm looking for inspiration...

I'm looking for inspiration... Good Luck! I have 64838 and was thinking I'd renumber it to anything but. Turns out J39's not at all common in the Chilterns and all the old blokes I know with extensive phots of the era, have very few (ie approaching zero) pics of a J39 hereabouts! That won't stop me keeping her or giving her the works at some stage, but funnily enough 64838 was one of the last in service and was based at Woodford Halse, so is a number you could rely on. Alternatively you'll have to track down a J39 in the London area you like the look of and use that as a basis/excuse. Rule 1 applies: it's your layout.

There were about 11 at Woodford I believe so I've got 10 to choose from. One or two even ended up as stationary boilers by all accounts!

64742 (1961) and 64747 (1964) were resting there in the latter days. They could well have ended up as stationary boilers esp 64747 as I think all J39's were out of service by 1962?
These are ones I know were shedded at Woodford Halse at some stage: 64727, 64742, 64747, 64798, 64809, 64838, 64875 and 64955.
(Mix of J39/1 and J39/2 - take care!)

Re. the J39s. 64955 was at Neasden until the very late 50s and that's now the number on mine! I think it was the last eastern loco based there after the midland took over. Top job on the 61XX by the way.

Panic seems to be setting in with ‘management’ as the A Stock seems no nearer to delivery. A clearance trial has been run recently with a couple of Q stock cars. They’ve found a Q23 driver that’s about to enter works, and a Q38 trailer newly ex-works. Here the ensemble has arrived: A few more showing the bay clearance measurements taking place (by an absentee workforce): Afterwards the coaches were stabled in the yard awaiting haulage back to Acton. Editor’s note: In practice I only have 2 Q cars at the moment so it will be ‘some time’ before I can assemble a full 4 car rake. Both cars are from the old Little Bus Co range. Although Radley Models do some, I could really do with a Q27 or Q35 car, and the LBC models seem to rarely, if ever, come up on a well known auction site. All being well these should be on show at: www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/calendar/event/503-thames-valley-model-rail-expo-2012/

Those cars look great, and so do the pics. Are there any plans of shooting some pics of steam and electrics side by side?

Colour film was very pricey in those days so our roving spotter had to be content with just a few pics as and when. I'll check in the archives and see if there's anything

I have downloaded a great LU set and i've acctually tried to model this station. lol. Sadly there are no curved platforms so i had to make it straight, but i tried.

Aha. My layout also used to be DC. Before i took it apart. Anyway, i found a 4 screenshots of the set i was talking about, in case you're interested: www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=52664&start=60The screenshots are at the bottom of the page. At that time they were just "Work in progress". I did not make them.

You beat me with Q stock on the your layout though 3 Q coaches appeared for short while at Acton last weekend
Have you fitted couplings to them yet and if which ones?

I've used Bachmann Mark 1 bogies, but replaced the wheels with 12mm spoked one rather than 14mm ones supplied. The real Q stock of course had spoked wheels, but also I feel they sit better on 12mm. I've taken the couplings off the Q23 but not the Q38 so far. As I haven't got a complete Q set they're just for static display for now

Once my life is back to whatever passes for normal I shall finish my 6-car Q stock set! Quality job on yours. Nice touch with the barrier vehicle and the MET Brake van too.
