The Evening Standard may have leaked this a day or two early as the LT Museum booking office hasn’t had the details confirmed yet – but there will be guided tours of the disused Aldwych tube station later this month running from 24th-26th September. The booking office said that the final details will be finalised within the next couple of days - so keep an eye on the LT Museum website. www.ianvisits.co.uk/blog/2010/09/01/coming-soon-guided-tours-of-aldwych-tube-station/

Let's hope an appropriate type of rolling stock is on display... The more I think about it, the more I wonder if they'll have a limited Holborn to Aldwych shuttle running available only to the ticket holders of the exhibition. Would it still be able to be used in this limited way I wonder? Aldwych is fairly inaccessible as it's quite a hike down/up a staircase not too dissimilar to the one at Covent Garden. When I was there, they told us that in case of a fire they'd turn off the traction current and lead us along the track to Holborn - I just wonder if they'd get the shuttle going to make it more accessible to people who couldn't physically manage the stairs. I was passing through Holborn yesterday and the lights were on on the disused platform and I managed to get this photo by poking my phone towards a gap in the top of the door. Sounded like something was going on there, whether it was or not, I know not. </speculation> Hopefully all the tickets will go really quickly so that it encourages them that more events like this are in demand and could be a moneyspinner.

Its good that these tours and the specials on the Met are starting to come back into regular play now. In the most recent pics I saw of Holborns platforms they looked pretty ropey...

I don't think the branch is certified for passenger trains now.

No shuttle, sadly! Access by the stairs indeed; I think there is a stipulation that participants must be physically ok to use the stairs.

Smidgen more information.
The tours will be led by people in period costume and the station will be decorated as a WW2 air raid shelter. Pricing still unknown.
The tours will be about 45 minutes each - which makes me wonder just how much of the station you will get to see.
My visit to the place took a lot longer than that - although it included both platforms and lift shafts.
I'd guess a quick visit to the ticket hall, down to a single platform for a look and back up again?

Perhaps like in the Battle of Britain film, they'll be "sheltering" on the platform listening to Churchill speak on the radio; though quite how they got a signal is anyone's guess?

Would it still be able to be used in this limited way I wonder? I doubt it as the signalling on the branch AFAIK is no longer maintained and the tops were lifted on the Tunnel Telephone relays years ago, I expect the relays are long gone now and the circuit decommissioned. IIRC a lineman is required to see trains in and out of the branch from the main as the necessary signals are plated normal on the frame and the points are also secured normal so have to be 'blown on the ground'. The IMR is at the Aldwych end of the disused platform down a few steps, I think I last worked there cleaning the lever frame circa 2004.

They've started taking bookings a bit early - you can phone them now (020 7565 7298) although you might need to redial a few times to get through.

They're not calling back if you left a message due to high volumes so call back if you're waiting!

I give up. 40 minutes of calling, half of my minute allowance spent on frigging "unfortunately" message and still no answer.

I'm still fighting to get through. They say you can also buy them from the museum itself, but with the strikes, that's not an easy propsect.
EDIT: Just got through, got my ticket for 3pm on the Friday.
Not the fastest booking process in the world, had to give them my postcode and house number twice.

Ticket booked for 9.30am on the Saturday. Took ages to get through and it's not as though you can just leave it ringing, it cuts through to a recorded message after about 6 rings.
Happy though, will be interesting to see if anything much has changed in the past couple of years.

I finally got through a couple of minutes ago, and have also ended up with 9:30am on Saturday. It was either that or 5pm+.

The train currently on the Aldwych single is planned to be moved tonight, back onto the main line, after the last passenger trains have gone. It has also been mentioned that the 38TS is going to go there.
