Fabulous! Thanks Ian! Just occurred to me.....the Isle of Wight must've been the last place where LT stock in daily passenger service were (are??) controlled by semaphore signals....?

Ian - apprecated the extra video and sound-bite. The sound-bite clicking section sounds like my '96 Subaru Impreza while waiting at a light!

The sounds remind me a little bit of riding on a 38, or a 59, or a 62. I was also thrilled to see the semaphore signals.

And Ian has given me kind permission to rip the sounds off and apply them to our RailWorks Standard Stock train. This is going to be amazing.

No need Ian. I've ripped them off your first video just as the train's departing Brading. I've now got the throttle, reverser, brake and lovely track bed rumble so it actually sounds like a train on wooden sleeper track. Done the bell and notching relay. Just need some comming to a hault squeels and that lovely compressor. I suppose I could change the whistle aswell for the 485.

Sounds great. I was trying it all out tonight. Great simulator, but the stock needs to accelerate faster and go faster. It seems to take a long time to travel a short distance, say Ryde Pier. Just a few tweaks needed to achieve perfection

There is a 20mph restriction on Ryde Pier. I had the acceleration rate for the LU version of the Standard Stock but tweaked the 485 to be a bit faster. Not fast enough by the sound of it. Are you running version 2 of the Standard Stock for RailWorks. After running your videos we also need to tweak the notching relay as it notches out alot quicker than we first programmed but we're on the case. Without any technical data on acceleration rates it's all a bit of a guess.
Anyone out there help on this issue.
Darren.

The compressor sounds a lot like some of our W class trams.

I've got some 8mm cine of a standard stock cab ride in 1968/9, which includes a bit of PS Ryde and the last other surviving 02, which was cut up the week after my cine was taken. Can anyone convert mit to video for me?

Funny you ask that Roy. I was just looking on e-bay to see if there was any gadget to convert my super8 cine films to video. I'm told it's a telecine adapter you need to search for if you have a projector and camcorder but compatability may be an issue.

I guess running my video on youtube along side the simulator would be great for tweaking the speeds etc?

Hi Again lol Yes am running version 2. There are 2 notch rates needed really. One for accelerating from still and another for when shutting off for rail gaps and notching back up. I still can't get over how fantastic the graphics are mate Ian

Another great video Ian. I thought we kept seeing shots of the train being driven from the control trailer until we got really close, then I realised they've painted the underneath of the offside window black to make it look like both windows are the same size. I noticed the train number in that panel as well.

Hi,
More video to come.
There was only ever one control trailer used. It was given a refit and converted back to a control trailer in the mid 80's. It was S28. an 'A' (Ryde end coach) The cab was given a BTH master controller rather than the fitted GEC one. Also a small equipment compartment was constructed behind the cab, on the drivers side, in a seating space. The Control trailer was used in a 3 car set (Along with motor coach S5) and was one of the last 3 coaches that remained here after the '38s' were introduced. It was used for de-icing duties. Most of my cab equipment came from S5 when it was scrapped in Sandown in 1994.

Ian, I have thoroughly enjoyed the standard stock clips on YouTube. Please, sir, can we have some more!! On the subject of control trailers; I photographed this one on the pier shuttle in 1990:#

Nice pic David. I suppose the fact there is only a 20mph limit on the pier and it's a 3 car train, it would only need one DM.

Oh yes S28. the control trailer that was rebuilt in the mid 80's. It was in fact the only control trailer ever used in service on the IOW. Things went well until you gapped the motor coach!! The set up was unique as the control traler had its own shoe gear, supplying half the lights (as is done on a 4/5 car set). The standard stock motor coaches worked fine with two trailers to push/pull, I recall a 5 car set with one motor coach only working (the end with the driver suffered a control gear fault). It still ran ok, just very slow pulling away. Ian I will try and upload some more video soon

Hee! Talk about evocative! Just the sound of the Compressor & PCM kit ticking brings back 10 years of holidays as a kid!! Just a shame I started working for the Railway the same year as the standards were on their last gasp else I'd have reams of video as well!! I suppose the next cut will be the other line up the pier, they've already demolished the platform (or most of it) shown in the pic at the Esplanade & boarded up the subway... I do remember seeing a 'Fictitious Liveries' style pic of a 72ts in Stagecoach livery somewhere online... I wonder if its still out there?!?

Oh Yes, I much preferred the sound of the individual BTH magnetic contactors. Classic simple reliable equipment! Although the interlock wiring looks a nightmare.

Have they done away with the pier shuttle all together now and just incorporated Ryde Pier into the working timetable. No extra services for summer?

The down platform was still in use when I visited at Easter 1990: The 1938 stock was just coming into service; certainly both types were in use then.
