Sorry DD, but it's term time and we won't be up in Hounslow West until tomorrow morning, and again next week. If Hampshire CC had elected fro Half Term this week then we would be there.
I believe members of the Transport Forum know about the trip, but not sure about the 'other' forum. I was of course on the last service CO/CP and R Stock trains, and the farewell tours. Pity to miss this one but there you are!

Yes, that article has a somewhat disparaging and uncredited hyperlink back to this forum further up this very thread where it says near the bottom: "Be warned also that the train is likely to be full of last-train-riding transport geeks with cameras, ". I hope the Admins feel able to deal with this as they deem appropriate.

Disparaging, maybe, but inaccurate? I don't think so. And I speak as one of them. I think you need to lighten up a little.

The point is that we only know about this working at all because of the credibility that this forum has with LU management and the fact that DD has been asked by management to publicise the event this way. So the credibility of this forum is very important and we all benefit very considerably from it.

Indeed we do and for that we are all grateful. There is no point however in taking offence when civilians describe us for what we are - transport geeks with cameras. If you don't agree, did you perchance witness the fun and games on the last day of the East London Line (RIP)? I would hate to have been a normal punter on that day. No wonder railway enthusiasts have a credibility problem with much of the rest of society. But I digress.

I actually do think you're being a little oversensitive about the comments; the guy has obviously researched his information and - dare I suggest? - maybe falls into the 'geek' category himself, even if he's not a 100% certifiable geek! Nice to see he's got much of his information from the premier LU forum though ! Maybe all wear badges later - 'Proud to be a Geek'? EDIT: I've now posted a reply on his blog thanking him for the plug and taking the geek comment on the chin !

He's (or she? ) also linked to my website a few times - personally I have no problem with that; I'm actually quite pleased people still visit it seeing as I've been unable to update it for almost a year now.

I'm going to try and catch it at Tower Hill. I've never done the last train thing. Am I right in thinking the train will be there around 5pm?
» Upminster 16:14 → Ealing Broadway 17:44 [via Tower Hill 16:59 & Earls Court 17:23]
And what do I do if I miss it? I'm coming from Southgate!

Hullo.Hi Bluey - and welcome to another female member - you'll be pleased to know you're not alone here. Your time estimate should be pretty well spot on - I don't have a timetable with me at the mo - perhaps someone else can confirm the actual time due at THL. Best thing to do if you miss at Tower Hill will be to make your way down to Earls Court and then wait on the eastbound platorms for it to return; it'll mean a bit of a wait but the best things in life are worth waiting for! I suspect that you'll find the geeks like minded folk in the leading car of the train - as close as possible to the drivers cab I would expect!

Hullo.Booked time at Tower Hill 16.59, so yup about 5pm. if you miss it, i'd suggest catching the next train to South Kensington and then catch a Piccadilly Line train hoping to overtake it before Acton Town. If you don't wait at Acton or Hammersmith (depending upon how late you are) for it to come back the other way to Upminster ! Have a good evening and welcome to the forum ;D

Oh, crumbs. The Circle's only gone and crippled itself. Can I still meet the train if I head to Aldgate East instead?

At least you guys (and at least one gal: nice to see you here madam) have the benefit of the internet. Back when we used tin cans and string to communicate, we relied on the word flowing around LURS about the last District trains. The first time I ever took notice of a train number! However, when waiting at Hammersmith for the last red service train, I found to my horror that it was an R stock! Seems that I was one week too early! One week later, there it was with the correct number.
Beware of geeks bearing gifts!

Get some photos please of you in the cab DD! I cast my mind back to Tower Hill bay when the then-new D78 Stock was on display to the public and I sat in that front seat and moved the controls around as though I was in charge!

By pure chance, and with the benefit of the (relative) anonymity of the internet, I can relate that I was offered a driving trip on a D Stock today by an I/O (that's enough details). Refurbed of course but I managed to cope with a reactivated "deadman lockout" device (I was still knocking the TBC into off & release after coming to a halt instead of Service 1 as in my day both applied full emergency with the deadman released), a close button where the N/S cab door button used to be (I nearly shut the car doors on passengers when about to alight) plus about a 1000% increase in permanent speed restrictions! My last go on the handle was around 12 years' ago but you never quite lose the knack do you?...
The sun is appearing intermittently as I write which isn't good for daylight photography at the east end of the District Line but fingers crossed for the light conditions this afternoon at Upminster!

I'm back! Rode it from Tower Hill (the Circle miraculously recovered) at the exact time it was scheduled to Ealing Broadway, and then back to Acton Town to get the Piccadilly back to my lovely warm house and fish and chips. I like trains and the LU, but I'm not riding the Tube 'til midnight thank you unless it's warm and someone's buying me pizza.
Anyway, yay for dangly things (still wasn't tall enough to take full advantage of the things), wooden floors and unpainted trains. May flights of angels sing thee to thy refurbishment.
Photos and video to come soon. I'm tiiired. Warm thoughts to all of you out there riding 'til the bitter end.

I've uploaded 146 images of today to my Fotopic site - currently in my Very Latest Photography gallery, but will in time be moved to London Underground: cjw.fpic.co.uk/c1324812.htmlParticular thanks to DD & aspect who were on duty ( aspect driving back to Upminster on the first return leg) and to other members who came along to enjoy this historic occasion... Surprisingly there seemed to be some interest from normal punters and even noticed one woman taken camera phone photos of posters on the cab of 7115 at Upminster around 7:30pm...

So that's it then......... I thoroughly enjoyed this evening and it was great to meet so many people off the forum. The special posters in the windows and informative PAs were really nice touches. Many thanks to DD, Aspect, COLIN and everyone else involved for the prior organisation and for sharing a super evening with the rest of us.
