378138 on its way from Derby this evening as already reported. Given that when ELL services commence officially next Spring the problem will disappear but in the meantime what's to be done as ELL 378 deliveries continue with nowhere to tuck them away until needed? Shadow running for staff training and continued infrastructure proving? There should be plenty of room to stash the ELL units at New Cross Gate in between the commissioning of the ELL infrastructure, after all NXG will become the main depot for class 378 maintenance after opening with Willesden becoming a secondary depot. I won't be much different for the modifications at Willesden (new washing plat, platforms at the north end etc.) that have happened whilst the 378s have been arriving.

I think Southern are actually planning to give the 313s Aircon when they're refurbished (price permitting of course) if you ask me they're perfectly suited to the Coastway route where the slower 377s struggle to keep time... It remains to be seen if SWT see sense & take the 508s for the Lymington pier branch. By all accounts the poor 158 they trialled recently was just plain suffering!

While we're on the subject of 378137, heres the thing being dragged around various bits of the network.... www.flickr.com/photos/16740339@N06/sets/72157622423677281/Still mystifies me how an Electric unit needs to be hauled by a Diesel & translator set whilst on the Juice... but hey... As H.G Wells put it 'Minds Immesurably superior to our own...' :oD Quite simple really its often because either. A) The power systems on the train has not been checked, tested, commissioned, B) That part of the line may not be cleared for that type of train. C) The train needs a certain amount of Miles free of faults before entering service, so you could not drive it straight from the line. D) The Midland Main Line from Derby is not electrified

Indeed, but since this unit had A) Been running round Kent all day on test & was still warm... B) Was being towed between Chart Leacon, Redhill & London Bridge, all regular Elecrostar haunts, C) Been running round Kent all day on test D) Was being towed between Chart Leacon, Redhill & London bridge, all 3rd Rail electrified... Its all the more mystifying.. Just Red tape I guess...

I've already had a test ride on these things and find them absolutely horrid. Not a smidging of charachter over the 313's. Still, I suppose they'll grow on me. They'll have to.

Just got this: Thanks to Andy M for this: On Wednesday 7th (next week) the first 378 will traverse the ELL from New Cross to Dalston at very slow speed. This will either be 001 or 004 as both are at New Cross. 004 has 001’s 4th car at the moment. These units will be the last for acceptance on the NLL side. 378136 is now at Ashford joining 137. These will be steadily delivered alongside the 378/0 NLL examples. I have seen on another website that the 4th car of unit 378004 is 38231. On the same site it also claims that the 4th car of units 378136 and 378137 are 38236 and 38237 respectively. On that basis shouldn't 38231 belong to 378031 or are the extra trailers for the 378/0's going to be inserted on a random basis. Logic would dictate that the extra trailers for the 378/0's would be numbered 38201 (for 378001), 38204 (for 378004) etc, etc? Does anyone have any gen on what the trailers should be? Regards Martin

The last two digits of the car numbers are supposed to match the unit numbers (378007 is 38007-38307-38107). So if the MSO in 378004 at the moment is 38231, it will eventually be part of 378231. Units 25 - 34 will be built as 378/2s so there won't be a unit numbered 378031. Are the TSOs in the 378/1s (the cars that would have a pantograph if they were 378/0s or 378/2s) still numbered as 383xx?

But if the unit is still undergoing commissioning, it may only be allowed to run under its own power in the area being used for the commissioning. This will mean it has to be dragged back to New Cross Gate.

I can't check this out at the moment but I'm pretty certain the MSO in 378004 is 38201 not 38231. This vehicle left Derby with 378004 for Shoeburyness for testing and was un-numbered until its return to Derby and further trip to NXG. If it retains this number it will form part of 378001 when that unit is lengthened and renumbered 378201. I suspect 378004 will remain misformed as a 4-car for as long as is necessary for testing, not only on the ELL as now but later on the NLL , WLL and DC Lines as they are readied for 4-car operation.

I assume this was chosen by accountants?

Oops I actually had it on the 21st September!! I thought 018 was delivered after 010 and 014 and these entered service on consecutive weeks recently. Must be going senile! I do believe now that all 378/0s delivered (except 004) are currently in service. Sincere apologies for the mix-up. Martin

They appear to have taken over the NLL already. I saw four service trains between Acton Wells and South Acton on Friday (the 16th) and all were 378s. None on the Watford DC lines though.

The D.C. will be the last to be converted as Bombardier are concentrating on building 4 cars for the E.L.L.

Yes, it certainly appears that way. I had my first journey on one last Saturday from Stratford and both trains at the station and all the trains we passed were all 378s... Fantastic trains by the way. Very spacious, quiet and fast. It is certainly noticeable that they are meant for typical urban start-stop journeys, they break and accelerate like maniacs. OK, not as impressive as the 92Ts but certainly a lot better than the old stock on this route which seems to crawl to the next station. The only thing that immediately struck me was the low ceiling. However, that may have been an optical illusion because it is so much wider than the old stock.

Correct me if I'm wrong as I've been off work for the past few days, from what I've been told by a manager if everything goes to plan the NLL and WLL should be fully converted to 378 operation by the end of next month. Don't know if enough drivers have signed off the traction yet.

Was on the NLL on Friday evening, and all four trains I saw were 313's, so the 378's are still a little way from taking over yet!

I think about half of the NLL services are being run by 378s. Last Monday, four trains in a row were 313s, and the next three were 378s. There are ten 378s in service, and it seems that there are 2 spare units. That would mean there would be 8 services in the peaks run by class 378s, but there might be one on the DC. How many trains are run on NLL/WLL and DC in the peaks? Also, when will the next 378/0 be delivered to Willesden? Its been a while since 378010 was delivered.

There are six trains needed to run the DC service and this is the same pretty much all day, Monday - Saturday, whilst the 20 minute frequency operates (between 6.00 and 20.00). The service reduces to every 30 mins during the evenings (after the 20.01 from Watford Junction) and on Sundays, with four trains needed in service. Class 378s have yet to enter regular service on the DC lines, due to problems with the Driver Only equipment, although they can run with a conductor. I would like to know that too. I think most of the 378/0 cars exist, but some have not been fitted out yet. This fitting out should be easier once the 377/5 deliveries have finished (I think these have nearly all been done now).

There are only two trains needed to run the WLL, yet one of them is ALWAYS a 313 (to my knowledge - correct me if I'm wrong). I have not, to date, seen a situation whereby two 378s are working the WLL.
Is this a deliberate policy for some reason? Do they insist that one WLL train must be a 313? And, if so, will this be the case right up to the last 313 left on the LO network?

And, if so, will this be the case right up to the last 313 left on the LO network? One of the reasons this may be is due to the fact that the majority of drivers diagrammed to drive the WLL are infact drivers who will be based at New Cross Gate for the ELL. At the moment, not all these drivers sign 378's so a 313 has to be used instead. Once the majority of these drivers sign 378's i'm sure the WLL will always have a full compliment of 378's. Also I believe they are still testing the CCTV equipment on the Watford DC line so a unit has to be available
