Today is the last day of Thameslink/FCC services to Moorgate. I believe there is a special last train being run. Anyone going down? RIP Moorgate/Barbican

Well at least the stations themselves aren't actually closing... northbound services didn't call at Barbican for a number of years anyway. That said I would like to have been on the last train in, something romantic about that.

The 19:54 empty coaching stock departure is apparantly going to leave in service.
I hope to be there and maybe board at Barbican 'Up Road' for the last time too.

The 1954 will be a passenger working, 2C18 to Kentish Town formed of the two Rainbow coloured 319s. Eventually after this the 319s will make their way to Victoria Eastern on preparation for Monday

Sorry to ask such an obvious question, but I don't pay a huge amount of attention to what goes on over the other side of the fence......... (and my google-fu is weak today)
Does this mean that the City Widened Lines are closing permanently or is it a temporary closure for rebuilding?

From Farringdon to Moorgate, yes. The platforms at Farringdon are being extended which will physically sever the route to Moorgate.

If you think about it the CLR had the same problem at Wood Lane and merely installed a movable platform!

Yeah but it's something to do with increasing frequencies on the core Thameslink route too, something made a lot easier with the closure of the Moorgate branch. London Underground can handle the resultant increase.

There are a couple of railway precedents - the level crossing through the middle of the platform at Halesworth for a start. The gates were moveable platforms.

There was no point of Thameslink services into Moorgate anyway, it just runs alongside the Circle Line, and passengers can just change to that at Kings X or Farringdon.

It had its uses. Remember, untill Snow Hill reopened, the branch was an extension of suburban services terminating at KX/SP for the peak hours. Its not that its pointless, just that the circumstances making it useful have...well, changed.

He means the Snow Hill Tunnel that runs between Farringdon and Blackfriars. City Thameslink is in the tunnel.

London Underground can handle the resultant increase. I guess that will come partly with the T-Cup services and partly with more Uxbridge-Aldgate offerings on the Met.

There was a nice picture of Moorgate on the back of Railway Magazine circa 1961 with an LMS 2-6-4T and suburban stock in the bombed-out Moorgate, before any of the skyscrapers were built. It looked far nicer than the current edifice.
BTW, does anyone remember when the new alignment for the Met tunnels were brought into use? ISTR it was about 1971, but someone on another site reckons it was the late 1960's.

London's Underground 8th Ed. has a picture of the works with the caption mentioning the date 1963-64 for ocnstruction. 71 seems a bit late by that?

There were various iterations of alterations to signalling in the early 70s at moorgate- I can't check them at the moment without treading on a sleeping angelislington.

From Farringdon to Moorgate, yes. The platforms at Farringdon are being extended which will physically sever the route to Moorgate. An honest question here..... In the past, people on this board have suggested new station sites as part of their pet schemes. Others have then said words to the effect of "Oooh no,Health and Safety won't wear that, platforms have to be "so" wide, straight and on the level" Given that,it seems to me odd to extend the platforms at Farringdon. To the East, the curve to Snow hill is so tight it needs check-rails,with no room for slewing as the tunnel mouth is 200yards away max.To the West is one of the steepest slopes you see in normal usage. The whole site is very constricted, especially on the South of the line. So what are the rules? Do they only apply to "new" stations? Have they had to ask for a derogation in this case? Much appreciated S

AIUI, [1] the rules (expressed in their most concise form) are that new stations cannot be built where there is a gradient steeper than 1 in 260 and the platforms must be at least 6' clear and capable of holding the longest train planned to stop at them.
There is also a stipulation about how many nits must be provided.
Unfortunately in the headlong rush of privatisation and fragmentation these very simple rules have been expanded and the real detail is exceptionally well hidden.
[1] the 1950s 'blue book' - which I have a copy of, but am quoting from memory as it is over the other side of the country still.

Video of the last passanger service leaving Moorgate is now up Mmm - The train left with no tail light visible (and the marker lights still on). Should we bell for train incomplete?
