I saw LO's new train unit no 378 001 come into and go from Richmond around 23.50 last night, running empty with test equipment inside.

378001 has been on test since last October.. But only in the last month or so has it been going on the North London Line.

Ah, I was going to ask if that was the train I saw very briefly heading North towards Willesden Junction as I headed South towards Acton at about 11:30 last night. Evidently it was, and my eyes were not deceiving me!

The big question is if the ELL will open before the 378s arrive?

The big question is if the ELL will open before the 378s arrive? Would they actually open it without the 378s being available??

I doubt it! I don't know what other trains they could use? Spare 319s?

Practically, there are no spare trains of any kind available. In principle, of course early class 378's could be diverted to ELL and 313's kept for a little longer. A look at the unholy mess around the late delivery of class 377s for FCC illustrates the shortage of stock

Use some class 314s from scotland which are of course overhead line only and would involve a large number of difficult stock transfers?

I doubt it! I don't know what other trains they could use? Spare 319s? Spare 319? Nope! There isn't any spare DV rolling stock at the moment or FCC would have had more stock for our new timetable. That said by the time ELL opens there will be alot more stock floating around but the 378s should be in full swing by then. Why don't they just deliver the 378 as 4 cars now due to the delays?

So what will happen to the 319s when they are replaced by 377s?

Are they not working alongside the electrostars?

Aren't the 319s being supplemented by the Electrostars.
When the Thameslink Programme is over, there will be a fleet of new trains for it. At that point the new 377s will be transferred to Southern (the interiors are to Southern spec.)

Are they not working alongside the electrostars? Yes - there are only a few (relatively) 377 Electrostars for FCC, which will do no more than supplement the 319s, until the new Thameslink trains appear in about five years

No idea, but I thought the idea was to have a brand new fleet?

T would have thought the 319s are not ready for withdrawal in 5 years - so where will they go?

Presumably to replace the 313s and other units of that era.

The problem with replacing the 313s is that the GN&City section can only take 6 car trains. Therefore something special will need to be done. The 315s could go though. I don't know what would replace the 313s on the Moorgate branch? Maybe new build 3 car dual voltage 377s. Could the 319s be reduced to 3 cars, by removing the trailer? They would be DTBS-Mpant-DTBS?

Noooo! They can't and won't replace any 313/315/317s!

I noticed the class 378 stopping marks are in place on the DC lines platforms.

Shame that as they are running behind schedule that they will be introduced on the Richmond to Stratford & Willesden Junction to Clapham Junction lines first.. Also can you imagine how hard it will be to get that stop board positioned in the drivers side window... The cab window is about A5 size... ouch!! Lets just hope that the GPS is forgiving...

I noticed the class 378 stopping marks are in place on the DC lines platforms. What do these stopping marks look like, and are there any on the other lines yet?
