I believe A60 Stock is prohibited from the south side of the Circle due to clearance issues.

So, it would be a west end driver that had problems stopping 5556 at Southfields a couple of weeks ago... I suppose Barking and Upminster drivers aren't trained for driving C stock because they aren't ever sent to Barking or Upminster on the District. Firstly, I have no idea what you are referring to as a 'problem' with stopping 5556. Elaborate and we may be able to at least suggest what occured. No - it's because there are no rostered Wimbledon/Edgware Road duties for Barking or Upminster drivers. As has already been stated only those T/Ops outside the roster (the pool drivers) are both stock and route familiar fro that route and stock as (in theory) they could be sent to cover Earls Court or Acton Town duties. Again - as already stated - the east end I/O's are both C Stock and Edgware Road route current.

I have to say that I haven't the faintest idea!!!! My son and I went to the Excel venue for the London International Music Show a few weeks ago on a Sunday and I used the DLR for the first time since 1998 - and even then was transferred to a rail replacement bus service due to engineering works. (The bus driver also got lost - but that's another story). Irrelevant post really

Back in 79 there would be no tip out.......just a few people shouting "all change please" a few times and that was it! Continued like this until about 8 years ago (I think), after someone was killed at Liverpool Street. I have heard this before but I have always wondered how a reversing procedure can kill a passenger. Can anyone enlighten me? Essentially the passenger panicked when he realised the train was going into sidings, tried to get out of the train using the inter car doors, slipped, and got squashed..........

As for a failed train on the Rayners-Uxbridge branch I see no problem at all, just get a ballast loco out of Ruislip depot to assist it! In principle I'd agree with you - but undoubtedly someone would would forget the appropriate coupler adaptor (or bring the wrong size, height etc.) and they'd then have to try to find the right one..... And trying to do a Wrong Direction Move would be a nightmare as they'd forget the form - not secure the route etc. Recipe for disaster

I don't understand why? Maybe i'm letting my idealism cloud my judgement here, but can't people see the line colour in enamel all along the platform, or the colours of the poles on the train, or simply... Know where to go? It's the fact that people can't take responsibility for themselves that all these stupid announcements have to be made. Anyway, the "This is a xxx line train to" is useless these days as it sounds too late for people to get off if they're on the wrong train. You are dealing with an 'imperfect world' here; believe me that the vast majority of the public who travel on an occasional basis (i.e. not the daily commuter crowd) do not have the awareness of the items to which you refer! We will all have to agree to disagree over the rights and wrongs of the announcements made by the train bourne equipment; my view is that it has to pander to the least knowledgeable/least common sense!

If the proposals go ahead to replace the Piccadilly's Uxbridge branch with the District, would those trains turn around at Mansion House, or is the platform not long enough? What proposals are these? I don't think this is going to happen now! This is one of those chestnuts that reappears from time to time! And the talk often starts at 'high levels' on the line. There is logic to it though: The Picc would undoubtedly prefer to be rid of the Rayners/Uxbridge service so that all their attention can be given to the LHR service; I have heard various ideas as to whether they would 'inherit' the EBDY branch for 'flexibility' but personally I doubt it. There is also the issue too of failed trains between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge - at the moment the A60's cannot push out a 73TS and vice versa whereas D78's (and of course C69/77's should they happen to be used) are compatible. What this means is that if there is a failed train somewhere on this branch there is a fair chance that the train behind wouldn't be able to couple and push it out - this will of course add to the delay already arising while an alternative solution is implemented! I have heard too that there is some sort of EU regulation/ruling about the use of dissimilar (i.e. tube design -v- Sub-Surface) stocks on the same tracks; I've not seen anything in writing on that but maybe someone else can confirm or deny that! Time will tell...............

You're correct in your description of them as 'pigs ears' - so named because of their appearance.
I don't know the specific location to which you refer, but many signals on the District have them. The idea is that they give you a view of the aspect when pulled right up to them - and for some station starter signals when you have to berth similarly close!

Seems to me the best thing they could do with this station is bring the bulldozers in and start again from scratch. I take it you're not impressed then??

The reconstruction of that roof has been I think a massive task.
Just thank the stars that it hasn't gone the same way as so many similar structures did; many of our stations would look so much better had the original roofs been retained.

Basically because the department (or at least someone in it) that makes the blinds can't spell !! It's as simple as that - there was for a while (on D Stocks IIRC) a few that said 'WIBLEDON' - nothing like quality control!

Connect is LU's new radio/comms system. It's a private digital network and a vast improvement over our thirty year old conventional system. It has loads of opportunities for all sorts of things - text messaging, closed conversations - stacks of stuff. Hope that helps

How does a train reverse at Hornchurch? As with many locations it is done either by using a wrong road station starter move (this would be the case at this location if reversing East to West) or if West to East would be by means of a Main Line shunt move. To add a bit of flesh to this, a wrong road move is by means of a colour light signal which permits the T/Op to leave in passenger service from what is normally the 'entry' end of the platform. If the main line shunt, the train would be detrained on arrival, shunted forward (under clear signals) to a 'limit of shunt' mark, the T/Op would change ends and then when a shunt signal clears would shunt the train (subject to any othet signals) back to the eastbound platform. Hope that helps.

Sorrry everyone for getting the info wrong. I'm only 12 after all. At around 7:35 every weekday morning, there is a train which leaves Wimbledon for Dagenham Heathway, so it must get detrained and continue to Dghm East. There are NO trains timetabled to terminate at Dagenham Heathway - the termination point for the train would be Dagenham East.

Is the District west of Whitechapel being served this morning only by Ealing Common-based trains and crews (apart from Wimbleware C-stock)? I wondered if any of the Upminster-based stock had been held west of the blockade last night. Almost certainly only the 'normal' number of trains which stable at the west end of the line (i.e. Ealing Common, Triangle Sidings and Parsons Green sidings will be operating west of Whitechapel. It's possible a few may have been 'outstabled' but this does lead to problems with train preparation. I'm personally on leave so don't know what's exactly happening - perhaps some of my colleagues can give more detail.

According to the BBC London News last evening one of the bomb disposal technicians returned to the device no less than FOUR times after it appeared that the fuse may well have activated! Apparently it is one of the largest that has ever been found in that part of London - and heaven only knows how many were dropped. I have no doubt that there are still many more UXB's in the area but what are the authorities supposed to do - ignore them? I repeat my earlier sentiment that there is no quick way to deal with these devices - it takes time to make them safe - there are no short cuts so the disruption is inevitable. In response to SS Stig - yes, there are indeed gas holders not all that far from the site but I *think* probably outside the cordon area.

It appears District line will be suspended from 2100 tonight, until 1000 tomorrow morning from Whitechapel to Barking What is going on? How come it is taking so long to sort this thing out?? I wish my second half involved an Upminster later on but its Tower Ealings bet I wont get out of anything With the greatest respect hb are you any sort of expert in dealing 60 year old ordnance which may be in a highly unstable state. The types of weaponry dropped during WWII was massive with a huge variety of fusing mechanisms. I think this is most certainly a case where these things are best left to the experts don't you? Or do I perhaps wonder if your sole cause for complaint is that someone may get out of work and you won't.......... ??

Yes - they had someone go walkabout from Temple (drunk - went down for 'physical relief') and then decided to not bother waiting for a train and started to walk to Embankment.
Traction Current was discharged and a track search ensued; he was found hiding in a bolt hole.
BTP welcomed him on arrivial at Embankment!

HB - You mean you had to open and close another set of end doors when changing ends?
Blimey - the stress!!!!
Errr - there wasn't a 'spare' platform at HSK either - one was for Wimbos, one was for Ealings, the other was for Edgware Roads - I know - I spent all of two shifts going through there; check the timetable - it wouldn't have worked.
Did I see you doing OLY's today and stopped at EC4's having what must have been a yellow at REC4? Tssssskkkkkkk!!!!!!!!

Thanks. As a mere passenger, I'm not entirely sure where all those stabling roads are - I take it 21-24 are between Parsons Green and Putney Bridge and 27 and 29 on the "town" side of Parsons Green station. Still doesn't explain why the train runs empty stock, though. If you have a look at my web site at www.trainweb.org/districtdave/html/parsons_green.html I did a pretty detailed review of PG there; perhaps that will clarify things for you!

adw has absolutely hit the nail on the head - it's entirely a safety issue.
If any process was introduced that would compromise this aspect it would result in us being publically castigated by just about every Health and Safety organisation involved in the running of the railway.
Problems on LU are always preceived to be worse than anywhere else because of the volume of trains and the intencity of the service it operates; I'm afraid I can't see a SAFE alternative to resolve these occurences - believe me all staff find these falures as annoying and stressful as the travelling public do!

According to the TfL web site there's a signal failure between Dagenham East and Barking and there was also an earlier failure in the West Ken area.
I'd guess it was the former that affected here.

Greetings all.....
Firstly I think Nicholas would be great for this - and I'm sure would be ameanable...
Railways are a passion of his, and there is some - ummmm... how can I put this... 'some previous contact' in matters such as this.....
I was actually involved a a very early stage in the Video 125's production, and actually was able to choose not only when it was done, but the trains that would be involved.
There are still stories to be told - one day..........................

What (dual) control facilities will be provided for Instructors on S Stock ? None I would guess! In specific, one of the major failings of many stocks is, there is no form whatsoever of dual control. A train with a trainee at the helm is supposedly under the control of the Instructor, however in practise, should a trainee fail to react promptly or accurately to an Instructors verbal command, the Instructor generally has no means of instantly taking over control of his train. By which I mean adding a bit of extra brake or applying an emergency application and then releasing it ! (A blow from the red handle on old stocks). Timings are critical and any error by a trainee may require instant correction to prevent a safety related error (SPAD, over run etc) See above lol! I understand your situation though and would offer the following alternatives: a) The judicious application of a shoe paddle to the offending hand, thus releasing the CTBC and causing an Emergency Application of the brakes. b) Slightly nore seriously - It is often IMHO good experience for the trainee to learn through the uncomfortable process of having to carry out a post incident 'discussion'. I assume a nice comfortable seat will be provided for the Instructor to rival or at least ergonomically match the drivers seat .. after all, it's the Instructors train. *spits coffee over screen* Yeah - right...... The Instructor needs to have all the necessary access to his safety devices from that seat. Instructors not wishing to be hunched up hovering over some distant means of stopping the train all day with dubious or erratic trainees !! In fact the Instructor needs safety devices / dual control period ! (Some push button you can't reach from the seat and requiring a key reset if touched is not fit for purpose (assuming that ever was it's purpose !) aka D Stock ) Have you got your ticket booked for your return trip to your home planet?
