I am posting this in the general section because it relates to Undergound, Overground and National Rail.
I was updating an item on Wikivoyage about London, and was wanting to know if it's reasonable to include a note saying that front-line railway staff have First Aid Training.
So my questions.
1. Do TfL/Overground/National Rail staff now routinely get First Aid training? 2. How often is refresher training undertaken? 3. Is it reasonable to consider 'front-line' staff in case of medical emergency? ( as well as the usual advice about calling an ambulance).
Please note that Wikivoyage is a general travel guide so it would be appreciated if responses were in keeping with what official policy is.

In looking to re-create the Trainsimmers Against Trespass site i went looking for updated statistics. And found that the following rail-industry site had been created: www.rail-life.co.uk/index.htmlGiven that the above linked site seems to cover virtually the same material as the TaT site did, I would suggest that links are updated accordingly. Alternatively if anyone is volunteering to update the TaT page (I no longer retain a copy of it or the banner ads..) please LMK.

Don't think i've ever seen a rat on the Underground before. Seen a couple of mice once running beneath the tracks at one of the deep-level stations somewhere. Although, I've never been on the tube late at night or early in the morning, when you are probably more likely to see them. And there are rats bigger than cats on the Tube?? I hope you are exaggerating lol. [/qoute] Do you get bats in old liftshafts? ( And I don't mean Gappe bats... )

This message has been moved to Signal & Railway Simulations and Modelling by Phil . Despite protests by the OP, this topic is only of relevance to those who have experience of BVE. Especially since the poster refers to "2004" stock - not a lot of real LU engineers will have worked on these...........

Hi,
Recently Open BVE ( a popular train-sim) was updated, and one of the features is the ability to provide external .NET plugins to implement simualtion of on-train systems (like TPWS for examaple).
With this in mind I was going to ask someone that develops for Open BVE to develop a plugin for the systems on a 'fictional' 2004 tube stock.
However, before doing that, I needed to write some rough requirements for what the on-board systems needed to do... What follows at the end of this post is the start of my attempts to draft some.
I appreciate that compared to formalised engineering requirements they are laughable, but some feedback would be appreciated.
Posted to trains rather than simulation because it relates to train systems more than simulation at present
Alex Farlie
Onboard Train systems for fictional 2004 tube stock.
-- 1. Critical ATP (Automated train protection) system --
i) The ATP critical system shall monitor train speeds and braking such that it shall be possible to brake trains (within the tolerance of service braking), such that no train shall come to stand less than a trains distance from a train or noted obstruction.
ii) The ATP critical system shall monitor train braking (service and emergency) and powering, overriding operator settings if these are insufficient to meet criteria (i).
iii) The ATP critical system shall indicate activation of criteria (ii) 'override' , in appropriate visual and auditory fashion.
iv) The ATP critical system shall include a tamper-proof logging facility, including criteria (ii) override.
v) The ATP critical system shall include an 'All Stop!' panic facility, for activation by appropriate authority.
vi) The ATP critical system shall include appropriate measure for the detection indication of, and halting of wrong direction movements without authority.
vii) Should a wrong direction movement without authority be detected than the ATP critical system will apply the emergency brake.
-- 2. Critical ASR (Auto Speed Regulation) system -
i) The critical ASR system shall limit train speeds to within a maximum line speed specified for a section of line to which it applies, (subject to additional regulation by the critical ATP system).
ii) The critical ASR system shall indicate the current maximum permitted line speed to the train operator in an appropriate and timely visual manner.
iv) Where operator action is insufficient to maintain criteria (i), the critical ASR system shall invoke automatic braking sufficient to ensure that a train is within the line speed for the line section concerned.
v) The critical ASR system shall indicate activation of criteria (iii) braking in an appropriate auditory and visual manner.
vi) The ASR critical system shall include a 'tamper-proof' logging facility, including criteria (iv) activation.
-- 3 Critical SSE (Station Stop Enforcement) system - i) The critical SSE system shall subject to additional regulation from the critical ATP and ASR systems ensure that a station cannot be passed at speed without authority.
ii) The SSE system shall indicate a station stop to a train operator in an appropriate and timely manner,
iii) On approach to a station, the SSE system will be activated at a distance appropriate to the line speed and braking requirements.
iv) When active the SSE system shall monitor train speed and braking, such that the train will come to stand within the appropriate platform envelope.
v) Should operator action be insufficient to prevent an overrun, then the SSE system shall intervene, applying a suitable braking profile for the station stop concerned.
vi) Activation of a criteria (v) override shall be indicated in an appropriate manner.
vii) Once the train is correctly berthed, the SSE system shall monitor any train motion during station operations, applying the emergency brake should any such motion be detected.
viii) Activation of the emergency brake in respect of criteria vii) shall be indicated in an appropriate manner.
ix) The SSE system shall be deactivated upon completion of station operations, and departure of the train. Door closure and subsequent 'correct road' motion will be taken as departure for these purposes. Reverse motion will result in a vii) activation unless the SSE system is informed of the reverse direction movement in advance.
x) The critical SSE system shall incorporate a tamper-proof log , including criteria (v) and (vii) activations.
xi) The SSE system shall include suitable arrangements for terminus platforms, including approach control at reduced speed as required.
xii) The SSE system shall include appropriate measures for station closures, maintaing a low speed through the closed station as opposed to an outright stop. Deactivation of the SSE shall occur once the train has passed the closed station.
--4 Non critical SRI (Speed Recommendation Indication) system -
i) The SRI Non-critical system shall advise as to a recommended speed for a section of line to which it is applied. ii) The SRI non-critical system shall indicate this recommended line speed to the train operator. iii) The SRI non-critical system shall also advise of upcoming changes to the recommended line speed in an appropriate manner. iii) The SRI non-critical system is advisory only and plays no part in train braking.

This is partly in fun Some ideas - Opening narration: 'It is the 22nd century, A city , and beneath... beneath the city, the tunnels run.. And in the tunnels, as the city flows, and as the city sleeps... Who knows the heart, who knows the mind? Who can say, Underground? ' With that in mind, any thoughts on what an 'anime' with tube elements might have? (Note: Anime can have some quite mature themes, it is not Saturday Morning cartoon stuff.)

i) Does anyone here know what the clearances under the two bridges at Finsbury Park are? The bridge over Serven Sisters Rd can clear Double-deckers and is,I believe plated at 15'6" (I SHOULD know this,I go under this bridge most days)... The Bridge over Stroud Green Rd is,in fact, several bridges as the tracks are separated by platforms, and they are different heights. I seem to recall that the lowest is 14"....not enough to clear a Double-decker,as bus drivers find out,to their cost.every now and again. If you want more info, let me know, and I'll pop over there this evening and get the exact data for you. The figures given are more than enough for me at present. The basic problem is that in re-surveying my Beck Line route I found some things didn't work unless I put it on Viaduct up the western side of Finsbury Park ( and substantialy altering the disused platforms there) The bridge clearance figure was needed so that I had a rough idea of how steep the embankment and cutting down into 'tube' tunnel towards Nags Head needed to be. Currently, assuming a 12 m drop (i.e the 6m from the viaduct to 6m below ground level) (the tube portal being 'roughly' underneath the intersection of where ValMcKilmer Avenue and Stacey Street are in reality) I get a gradient of about 1 in 48, which although tight is comparable with other 'metro' type operations. North of Finsbury Park, the Beck Line route IS effectively the Northern Heights route (which I understand has already been made for OpenBVE.) South of Finsbury Park, I'm still looking into

Data request in connection with a train-sim route... (This information is needed so that I can accurately model some gradients in the route.)
i) Does anyone here know what the clearances under the two bridges at Finsbury Park are?
This is so I can set some gradients up properly on that section of a route.

Hi,
Does anyone on this forum have experience in modelling directly from photos?
I'd be particularly interested in anyone that's used photogamertic(?) techniques to obtain specfic dimensional information. (My understanding is that such techniques ARE used by some modellers, as well as by those doing full proper engineering surveys)

It suprises me that this is so, after all one could make a rough and ready guess of the layout at places such as HOTH and try to model it; as many have. I don't fully see how security issues would apply either; when was the last time someone with bad intentions to London bought a copy of Quail 5 and a drivers line video? Both of which are readily available and, afaia, unmonitored in circulation. The systems easiest vunerability is in its popularity, not its technical infrastructure. The layout may be guessable, as might some of the interlocking... However my understanding from past discussions is that a view is held that a detailed simulator of a real signalling location might provide technical insight to those wishing to use the information not for genuine research or analysis purposes, but for the commission of acts that are not in the interests of the integrity and security of that infrastructure... The Simsig developers have respected requests from the rail industry about not covering certain locations BTW.

It should be - it is the hinge point of where the blades attach to the straight stock rail. It's certainly mentioned in the GWR <spit> track course I've got, and the pivot point (badoom tish) of all turnout based calculations, unless there is a whizz bang new formula that has come out recently. I think the notes are from Aldermaston in 1943. Very, very odd. OK The notes I am reffering to are these one : www.norgrove.me.uk/permanent_way_notes.htmDo you mean what's noted simply as the 'heel' in those? (Or am I getting confused?) I'll have to draw a diagram it seems...

I've probably got most of it in the PWI handbook - but it isn't easy to copy, as it runs to pages and pages and pages. PS. When you're designing points - do not, I repeat do not forget to include the heel block clearance in your calculations.Which is exactly? It's not something I'd come across in the ex GWR notes I'd found. Looks like I'll have to find a copy of the book you mention

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone on here was able to help provide a set of metric figures and formulae for various 'standard' dimensions in respect of turnouts and switches used on the tube network...
I was wanting to try and model some points in an accurate fashion, but was currently lacking the dimensional information to do this.

Just like the other one that there are nearly 1000 steam locos in storage in a disused mine somehwere in the North west. This is so that if there were ever an attack which totally destroyed both our electricity system and our oil supplies we would still have native steam driven by native coal. The theorists point to the huge difference between locos supposed to have been scrapped and those recorded as cut up by the scrapyards. At least, that's what "They" say. I am quite partial to the odd conspiracy theory and the more extreme the more amusing...... Ah yes the S * * * * * * * c R * * * * e !... There are as many alleged locations for it as there sites for "King Aruthur's" Burial... ...

The abusive response that 21146 has received puts a completely different spin on the issue and consequently changes my approach. I can prove that the images used are mine (have a copyright assigned to me across the image) and I have therefore put in a complaint to YouTube regarding some of the videos (those that contain my images). What disturbs me more however, ... Complain to You Tube ( you already have about the copyright) , but also on taste and decency grounds... Also you migth want to ask You tube if they are prepared to give you an address so that you can action the uploader directly... (3 strikes ... and you might get them cut-off <evil grin> )

Aha! According to CULG and Wikipedia, for the first seven months of its existence, until May12th 1894, it was open on Saturdays only, to serve the pleasure gardens when a football match was on. The line itself opened in 1880, originally non-stop between Neasden and Harrow (This was long before the stadium was built of course) Opps ! Award yourself a 'trainspotter'[1] for spotting an accidental error. Well done so far folks, BTW I am in need of assistance in clue setting, you seem to be finding them far too easy [1] A Your Sinclair award given to people that wrote into them pointing out mistakes and typos..

3 = Stadium as when it was built, I seem to recall, there was a loop for trains serving the British Empire Exhibition. Yes, there was a loop, with station ("Wembley Stadium"), closed 1969, but this was completely separate (and best part of a mile away) from the current Wembley Stadium (then Wembley Hill) Well done, The change in name for Wembley Hill was why I set the clue the way I did The Hill ( ex Wembley Hill) once looped ( Original Wembley Stadium) 'once' here is used to suggest a transfered name You have to think creatively when reading the clues folks XD
