Straying very much off topic really, but isn't Covent Garden said to be haunted because of it's depth and the strange noises emitting in the 160+ feet between street and platform level, though there is an accompanying story too which probably whips the fear up when the two combine.

I presume the word is an Americanism meaning "great" - Can't say it's one we use over here aside from the wannabe rappers!

Can they not be hooked up to battery locos? That way, any number of 4 car units can go, and others get more of a reprieve.

Indeed. By the way, why does it say Global Mod under your name twice in different colours? It's not twice in different colours it's once in each colour, but I don't know why either. ;D See above

You should live in Grantham, there are three low-ish bridges there, and there's an average of 150 bridge strikes through the year between the three of them, also known as three of the five most struck bridges in Britain.

I imagine there must the original plans hanging around in some office somewhere. I wonder if a FoI request would reveal where they are stored?
Ben, can you imagine how long that would take - Fun, and the end result would be something else, but time consuming none the less. Even a single line with it's twists and turns plus crossovers would be an interesting project - I volunteer to do the Waterloo & City! ;D

Yes, our evening services, particularly the last ones we were instructed not to sit and wait at timing stops, but to carry on very slowly. Evening services were only to be driven on buses with bandit screens too.

Which leads to an obscure aside; Police, ambulance etc aren't actually (well weren't at the time) allowed to pass through a red light, only a post office van could because by definition "nothing is allowed to stop the Queen's mail"
I think it's actually still a law, but just one of those that nobody knows of, like the law about Hackney drivers having to carry a bale of straw in their boot etc.
Anyhow, this is all for a different thread, we're straying miles (see what I did there) off topic....

ISTR posting elsewhere about scrap DR Q stock I worked from Upminstor to Ealing common via EBdy. come to think of it, it was scrap R59 stock hauled by Q38 pilot motors. Part of the 7-car programme. Leave that one with me, I'll have a search around in the morning as I recall something like that when we were doing the archives threads. (It might even be there) I've been busy playing around looking for info in the 35 converted to 38ts stuff today - That seems to be a bit like banging your head against a brick wall, in that I wonder why I ever started! (But that's a different subject)

A Stock overhauls at Acton indeed began in 1965 - unit 5006 (sadly no longer with us) was the first in 1/65, although it may have gone there in late-1964. The route was Neasden - Rayners Lane - Acton Town - Acton Works and vice versa. There must have been a severe speed restriction in place surely?

We're getting there... They mean to proper services? (and sandwiches?) No, BR (as it then was) was massively underfunded by a succession of Governments, and at the time it was a revolution for a train to reach 125mph even though it was possible with steam donkeys years previously. BR at the time were notorious for late running or non running for various reasons, but the introduction of those diesels and the guarantee of reaching 125mph at some point in the journey was hailed as a major success despite only emulating a feat from years previously. Hence the slogan "We're getting there" They had to reinvent themselves and make train travel sound and look like a viable option as opposed to roads which at the time probably were just as easy, quite probably quicker and cheaper - The slogan was then changed to "Let the train take the strain" Sadly, it's been underfunded hugely since then as well, sold off as a loss maker (As most of British industry was when Mrs Thatcher realised how much the tax payers were propping up the enormous wage bills of the union based industries) and as a result, knocking onto tube as well, it'll always be light years behind Europe and the major world Cities.

To be honest, I waited for I don't know how long for the app to be released for Blackberry as I thought the browser wouldn't work with proboards, only to discover that I've been putting the wrong password in all the time, and after all that, the Blackberry browser is one of the quickest I've seen, and wallopingly* quick when linked by wi-fi.

They were replaced by de-icers fitted to service stock. One has been preserved by the LTM and is at Acton. Whereabouts? I don't recall seeing it last time I was there
