Under the 'New DLR rolling stock' thread I said I can't recall a previous build that got so far ahead of entry to service. It requires a lot of costly storage space. However, I vaguely recall tube trains stored on a military railway at Shoeburyness, and maybe elsewhere, when there were too many for the LU network. Was this in preparation for the Jubilee Line extension before Stratford Market depot was available? Can someone remind us of those times? IIRC there were many to and fro moves of a variety of stocks. This thread suggests it was more recent! |

Several 1973 Stock units were stored on the Bicester Military Railway before delivery, the last leaving in September 1977.
S Stock were stored at Asfordby depot on the Old Dalby Test Track prior to delivery.

Former 1972Mk1 stock was stored at Shoeburyness following withdrawal from the Northern Line in the and were taken from Moreden to Shoebury by Road, these units were allocated as spares for the Bakerloo Line / Victoria Line depending on Compressor types and 2 for Engineering trains one which became the former AIT. one was converted to a Rail Grinding Unit and painted yellow but was subsequently scrapped.

I seem to remember JL 1996TS trains being stored at Long Marston rather than Shoeburyness, but maybe both were used. We also had several stored at LU depots including Upminster, Cockfosters (I think) and one at Edgware Sidings (my first ever trip there!). These would have been 3 car unit moves with the pilot unit which was a converted 62TS unit. The Upminster ones got heavily graffiti attacked so I don't recommend this sort of thing. |
