It looks like someone glued a bowl to the front of a 95/96 and uglified it.

Made me laugh out loud that one! Don't sit on the fence Onion! I have to say I find the design original although not entirely to my tastes. I would assume Onion's reaction is similar to that expressed by latter day Met passengers brought up on Sarah Siddons when initially confronted by A Stock. It's nice to see someone concerned about the loss of the heritage look but heritage is subjective isn't it? Today's "ugly load of rubbish" is tomorrow's design classic!

At the moment this just seems to be a design study on the technology of the train, so hopefully at this fairly early stage in the process the current appearance is just a filler design for the model. I would hope that later on a proper industrial design firm will be engaged to work on the styling, interior etc. There are more details of the EVO project in this article from Rail Engineer magazine and on pages 24 and 25 of this PDF of a presentation given by Mike Brown, Managing Director of London Underground. I note that on this model, and the earlier CAD images of the same design, there is no drivers door or even a cab window. Is this also an artefact if the early nature of the design, or does it indicate that this train is likely to be driverless?

Haha WhistleKiller, that is literally the first thing that came to my mind but originally the word rubbish was a ruder variant when in my head!

A director-level LU manager recently referred to that fact [no T/OP cab} in casual conversation and included comments that:
These are deemed the "3rd Generation" of LU trains.
And (In my own view) reading between the lines (sic) LU must surely be thinking that if they can have an ATO/ATP, driverless train, 1900s-single tube tunnel route, spanning LU/NR, serving severe curved platforms. etc, then that can work anywhere?
No doubt WI-FI will allow control centres to issue instructions to passengers in emergencies as to what end of the train to detrain in tunnels...

Well that’s a well researched article, twice it claims that the new S-stock is being rolled out on the Victoria line.
In case we’d all forgotten the planned replacement trains for the Piccadilly (which was due to get new stock before the Bakerloo) were cancelled last year due to the collapse of Tube Lines and it was announced that the tendering process would not re-start for at least 8 years.
TfL doesn’t have the money and the DfT isn’t going to give it to them.
On the design of the EVO and the possibility of NoPO there is a suspiciously large area at the front of the train without a passenger window; wonder what that’s for?
Christian Wolmar believes it would take billions and more than a decade to convert the Tube to driverless, at present we can’t even afford to finish six step-free access projects.
Wabosos and Clark can plan and plan and plan but without the money to do anything this is merely a paper exercise but then as they have no real projects to plan for they have to do something to justify their huge salaries and departmental budget.
I somehow suspect I will still be driving 92s when I retire in 15 years time. Yawn.
PS if they did introduce EVOs on the Bloo and the Drain I'd be delighted, I wouldn't have to keep swapping my W&C duties

I somehow suspect I will still be driving 92s when I retire in 15 years time. Yawn. 15 years!!! You going that quick? The line manager - PT said to me the other day that "These days there's nothing stopping me working up to 70 and beyond" It's the "beyond" thing that got me. Once in my urn rather than being used as a door stop or a paper weight electrodes could be inserted and I could be hard wired into a tube train's gubbins. Wow, the urn could even have an LU roundel on the front which'll look good as it's propped up on the dash. The first of the new ZOT fleet - Zombie Operated Train

Zombies on strike for more brains. Bob Crow says "Uuuuurrrrggggghhhhhh". Crow grunting would fail to make headlines in any paper :X Well we don't know what was being grunted here. No doubt a BIG burp then onto possibly discussing Concept Tubes. Still this was a gross invasion of Bobo's privacy in my opinion. It was a private do. It's a shame the link to yesterday's Sun article is now not working as it showed grainy telephoto pictures of the guy with his mates sitting in a Sodhexo Canteen in Mayfair. How desperate a media is that? www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2003716/Union-boss-Bob-Crow-takes-break-Tube-strike-plan-650-lunch-Mayfair.htmlA misplaced decimal point in this article should read £6.50, not £650.00. Trouble is, with a possible strike looming the media consider him fair game as they always do. Talking of which. I wonder what he had for Main? - Grouse or partridge washed down with bubbly from a crystal slipper? - The usual fare served up at at Rat City or Leytonstonawiza east of Java. Bubbly isn't allowed at the places mentioned above ( not Sodhexo Mayfair though ) so crystal slippers aren't available, yet. So I tried the next best thing - Tepid Tesco's instant drunk from a flip-flop. Didn't work. For some reason it kept runnning off via the toe thong. Keeping this thread on track and it's back to Bobo's hypothetical over dinner conversation......... "Buuuurrrrp, belch...........These new concept tube trains would have to be BIG enough to get us all in after this lot. I propose gull wing doors to scoop me in to get me back to Woodford in my crystal slippers"...............

That is a Sydney Tangara train, designed in the early 80's. Would be interesting seeing one of those trundling down a tube line, though having said that looks nothing at all like the Siemens model above! Not even close.

I think it is quite iconic. I haven't seen any train with an oval shaped front end and I could certainly imagine it. Though let's be honest...I am 100% intent there will be a CAB at the front and rear of the train with the driver seated in the middle of the train.

Philip Treacy said the same thing about the hats he designed to go with the 2000 uniform issue. Can't even find a picture of them, they were that "iconic".
Friedrich Timmer, Project Manager for Rolling Stock in the Mobility Division at Siemens, expects prequalification for the next-generation train procurement process to start in 2012.
No money = no new trains. Maybe 2022......

Its a bit rich of them to update a former LT concept, offer it during a pretty harsh recession, and then proclaim "‘we believe London Underground is ready for the next generation of trains". Slightly patronising, perhaps?

He he! I like the point about the cab being an afterthought though. The likes of Manser and Graff-Baker would be turning in their graves!

The timing of this right after the Thameslink announcement suggests that its purpose is to wind Bombardier up, and precipitate another Project Archer type scenario.
Its basically yet another rehashed version of the "Space Train" that some people in LUL have been dreaming about for years - practically I think there will be a lot of issues with it particularly noise.
