Well a strange question, but as far as I know, Women have been working on the tube for years. These days there are Women drivers, managers, signal women, controllers etc as well.. not just platform staff (aka SA's) .. we have some women staff on the forum .
I am not sure if there are women working at every single station, but I am sure there are many!

Was this automated? That is being put in at many stations. I really do hope that due to the poor state of the assets at Acton Town that this isn't the case there. Or was it a human member of station staff? At many stations where passengers have a wide variety of destinations to travel to, it is desirable to have said SA on the platform to assist in enquiries.

If anyone is slightly confused, then the second post in this thread should actually be the first. Happy Bunny is replying to Sarah607,

Hear it often at Finchley Road - "Metropolitan line - the train now approaching is to Aldgate. Please stand back from the platform edge". It is automated and can be quite confusing when a Met and a Jubilee are approaching at the same time.

This type of announcement is also used on the Eastbound at Tower Hill.

.....And what happened to the slightly croaky-voiced (male) recorded on-train announcement on the Piccadilly, who,as far as I could tell, only did the honours for Kings Cross-St.Pancras,giving the long list of lines a plausible world-weariness? He seemed to just disappear,a couple of years ago.....I do hope he's alright......

Of course she's happy, she was paid for this, and does not have to stand on a cold platform like station staff have to

I thought the announcements at Finchley Road said what the next station was - I have heard something like 'Jubilee line - the next train to Stanmore will arrive in 2 minutes. Next station: West Hampstead'.

I much rather prefer a station staff on the PA than a robotic voice like this.

Happy Bunny is replying to Sarah607, I was confused too... it looks like I read sarah607's mind and answered her question before she asked it (well or not as the case may be, as I didn't realise she was talking about the automatic announcements). Sarah607, next time it may be better to click modify and change your post that way, if you need to.

There aren't many - there are only four or five I can think of, none of which are on the District.

I don't like the announcements at Preston Road (The ones that say 'the next train will arrive at platform 2 in 2 minutes. It will be a Metropolitan line service calling at all stations to Aldgate').

They are quite good yeah better than manual announcements that are often unclear... there is an announcer at Acton Town (real man not machine) who has a very unique voice.. often when I am standing on the platform waiting to pick up or go home, people ask me "what did that announcement say?" , then often comment he must have had a late night last night!
The automated ones are better and clearer.

I still think the best voice the underground had was the mans voice in the 1973 tube stock. Extremely clear.

I am afraid to say I find the tone of the woman's voice for the recorded announcements very condescending - almost like the way someone would talk to a small child. I'm sure others will disagree though

I was thinking the voice on the 1973 stock was a womens voice.

I was thinking the voice on the 1973 stock was a womens voice. It is now. IIRC, it was changed from the man about two or three years ago. The male announcements were rarely heard because they had to be played manually.

It was the voice of an actual Arnos driver too! I used to use it all the time after a lady passenger at Uxbridge congratulated me on my "Sexy Voice"!!

She is really good - the announcer everyone is referring to at Platforms. It is really minimalist which is what I like about it. I am in favour of it being used at as many stations as possible.
It is worthy to note, they are only found at stations which tubelines own, not 'metronet'. I heard 'metronets' version at Finsbury Park (and Shepherds Bush I think) and it isn't as good.
----
In regards to the DVA on board trains, wikipedia is right; it was around NOV 2006 in which it received it. The voice is that of Julie Berry as heard on many National Rail trains and the Heathrow links.
