we have some women staff on the forum . We do indeed <raises hand> there are not many women in my grade (controller) but the number is increasing. It's changed a lot from when I joined LU in the 90s - when I got my driver's job in 97 I was the only female driver on the Bakerloo line, there's loads of women drivers now.

Is the Metronet one the one that is used at Preston Road? Well, according to the information I have, Preston Road is on the Metropolitan line's Harrow on the Hill group, which makes it a Metronet asset..... We do indeed <raises hand> there are not many women in my grade (controller) but the number is increasing. We have two female controllers on the District now - both only recently qualified - prior to that, the District had always been all male.

The female American sounding District controller is the best one up there. You get answered promptly and treated with respect by her. A nice surprise for Circle drivers compared with the treatment we usually get on the dark side.

There aren't many - there are only four or five I can think of, none of which are on the District. S&E Contractors as Signals & Electrical were when we first moved to Acton from South Kensington and elsewhere had a couple. One had been a Tech 4(E) Comms and took the opportunity to work on the DLR as a wirewomen with about a dozen comms installation staff. During the DLR project she transferred to Signal New Works at Whitechapel and trained to be a TO. I believe she moved into the office as the last contact I had with her was when she advised me on preparation of method statements and risk assessments for a recovery project that I was undertaking involving various hazards. There was a female new works technician (T4E IIRC), who was married to a TO, and briefly came to work with me when I was recovering the Vic line carrier wave equipment years ago. One female apprentice that I helped to train was a TO at Arnos Grove depot when I retired. AFAIK she is still there. There were certainly other women in the engineering ranks. The first female signal apprentice ended up on Comms Maintenance as a chargehand, at devolution got dumped into the redeployment pool, as did so many others with little or no seniiority, then got a job on the Picc as Comms Support Engineer. She used the opportunity to take business qualifications and then left to join GPT/Plessey on the Northern Line Project. Last I heard she was doing very well as a project engineer at Marconi. Many ex-LU Comms managers and staff are at Marconi these days. I think the loss of apprenticeships in the years following devolution and outsourcing of engineering limited opportunities for more females to enter engineering but no doubt there will be a resurgence at some point though the credit crunch. Having said that there have also been women in the higher echelons, one I worked with prior to devolution had left university with impressive qualifications and was unable to get a job so she joined LUL and became a secretary to one of the signal engineers. After a few months she sought an opportunity and was given a chance, she was in fact the project manager I worked with when I installed the first tranche of LU CSDE equipment on the H&C. She was good to work with and very efficient but IIRC she left the company to emigrate. I guess one or two of these maybe ones that you know!

Yes indeed, when I began with LTE in 1977 there were plenty of women fluffers and quite a few railwomen on stations but IIRC no female supervisors or control room staff. ISTR the first female driver was on the District circa 1978/9 and as you say there are loads now, I ran into one or two on the Picc when attending track failures. I also ran into quite a few female station supervisors over the years and one or two female signallers as I worked in all the control rooms bar the newest two. In fact I may even have met a female info assistant at Baker Street in th 1980s, never quite sure about that though, and when I was installing some of the original kit at NCC (NOC or whatever this month's flavour is) I'm sure some of those manning the key desks were female. Of course the females I perhaps remember best are the ones in the original BTP info room at 55 Broadway circa 1979. I spent a couple of weeks there doing some comms update work and the two sergeants on the switchboard wound up me whenever they could. Years later in the 1990s working in the new PIR it was disappointing to see all the chairs occupied by males but I was only there at night so perhaps the females were on the day shift.

Well, according to the information I have, Preston Road is on the Metropolitan line's Harrow on the Hill group, which makes it a Metronet asset..... The announcer will still announce the 'nontubelines' such as at Euston, the function will be there for the Victoria Line. I am not sure if the one at Preston Road would be the tubelines type, judging by the description. It is more likely to be a 'metronet' one.

Hi all,
The original Covent Garden announcements were unusually switched on yesterday - anyone know why?
Its the one with the muffled man westbound, and muffled woman eastbound, in which they state "This is Covent Garden......The next station is Leicester Square.....Stand clear of the doors."
I do love such nostalgic features. Much better than the 'mind the gap' woman at Royal Oak anyhow, who is an ultimate cringe!

I don't know why, but I know they've been on since at least last week as I head them while going through. There's a really nice woman driver on the Picc who cheers up me and my boyfriend whenever we encounter her; she says things like 'the good old District line', and makes the trip that bit more pleasant! Not that I've ever heard a really miserable driver, though...
