I recently bought from ebay a trio of Triang LNER teak Thompson coaches. They are to be repainted into BR crimson for my Harrow-on-the-Hill layout. Does anyone have any idea what numbers should be on them? Currently they have 1870 (brake coach), 1010 and 1010. Cheers www.cometmodels.co.uk/data/PDF/LNER%20page%201%20and%202.pdf

The Triang ones are merely a new bodyside of Mk1 profile attached to the old Triang Mk1 chassis. If I were you I would put them back on E-bay and look for some Bachmann Thompson coaches. These were far better models than the Triang ones knew how to be and came in mock teak, carmine and cream and maroon. They produced a brake third, brake composite, all third, composite, all first and a full brake! They were released in the era when plastic wheels ruled but these can be replaced with the new Hornby 14mm coach wheels which are available in packs of ten axles. Bizarrely, the Bachmann replacement metal coach wheels have a different axle end profile to the old wheelsets and they don't fit well! I have a set of Bachmann Thompsons and I will send you a pic via e-mail when I get a chance. My brother has a layout that appeared at the Warley show in December 2007 and I lent him a set of stock that consisted of the new Hornby Gresleys, Bachmann Thompsons and Bachmann Mk1s all in maroon. It looked fantastic!

I replaced the old plastic wheels with hornby metal ones. I don't think they are ebay fit any more. I was going to spray them up in maroon with BR lining and new glazing. The Bachmann coaches are nice but hard to find. I'm going to stick with these, after all, my layout is all about electric trains-complete with flashes! Here is said coach. ronfisher.fotopic.net/p40644186.html

Good luck with your Harrow on the Hill layout, are you setting it in a time frame, i.e. 1960's etc.

DWS, I was going to base it on the modern era with A60/62 stock and Chiltern turbos, but there was so much old sub surface stock available I decided to dual era the layout. The station was rebuilt from the late 30s so my layout will be from then. It will include the final days of the Met saloon stock (which you all know I'm making kits for at the moment), along with the Ashbury/bogie stock in electric mode, T stock, new O/P (CO/CP) stock, dreadnoughts, and MW stock motors runing with saloon stock and bogie stock. There will also be some F stock for the 1950s.
The layout will include working signals, trip cock testers, track flashes and working platform destination boards!
The baseboards are under construction and I have a couple of trains painted.
I have started to convert a bogie stock coach from the ratio kits until I found a 3 car Ashbury stock kit for 100 quid!
Thanks for all your comments.
